1. Giving Chezi the last word: http://israelnn.com/article.php3?id=3275 2. January 30, 2004 COMMENTARY Dumb and Dumber By HARRY STEIN How much further can the academic Left sink? You would like to think that academe hit rock bottom last summer, with the release of a "study" at Berkeley "proving" that conservatives are mentally ill. Conducted by four researchers, two of them Berkeley profs, it "culled through 50 years of research literature about the psychology of conservatism" to establish that the sickness manifests itself in rampant intolerance and a conscienceless capacity for cruelty. "Hitler, Mussolini and former President Ronald Reagan were individuals," the study confidently asserted, "but all were right-wing conservatives because they preached a return to an idealized past and condoned inequality in some form." Who would have thought that just four months later, another study, by Dartmouth researchers, would challenge the Berkeley one for offensiveness and idiocy? "Proof That Bigotry Can Tax The Brain," one newspaper headline described the study. To discern the hidden presence of racial bias in white thinking, the researchers confronted a group of "well-educated" and "well-meaning" white undergraduates with images and words associated with black people in the presence of a black "experimenter." Then, using magnetic-resonance imaging, they measured activity in the students' brains. It turned out that the higher the test subject scored on the bias meter -- i.e. the more his brain showed agitation -- the worse he later performed on a test of cognitive ability. The effect of contact with another race taxed the biased white brain to the point of making it unable to concentrate. Imagine the excitement of the researchers as "objective" research confirmed what they'd known all along: that Jim Crow might be dead and buried but that residual racism survives in white hearts -- even if unconnected in any way to actual behavior. Yet knowing who these kids were, isn't it just as likely that all the test showed was their hypersensitivity not to be racist -- because they know that's what it means to be a nice, ethical person? Perhaps true, study author Jennifer Richeson replies, but struggling too hard not to appear racist shows that one is uncomfortable with members of other races -- ergo, still biased. "[The test subjects are] being more careful when talking to a black person. They're trying to make sure not to say the wrong thing," she explains. Talk about defining bias down! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DOW JONES REPRINTS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This copy is for your personal, non-commercial use only. For these days, even the most innocuous statement or action can bring down the devastating charge of racism. Consider an incident at the University of Virginia just a week before the Dartmouth study came out. In the midst of a free-wheeling conversation about favorite sports teams, an employee of the school's medical center said something like: "I can't believe in this day and age that there's a sports team in our nation's capital named the Redskins. That's as derogatory to Indians as having a team called the Niggers would be to blacks." Though nobody present was offended, since the context was perfectly understood, the remark ignited a firestorm. The staff union at sponsored a "protest against racism at U.Va.," and Julian Bond, national chairman of the NAACP and a history professor at the school, demanded that the offending employee make a public apology and undergo sensitivity training. As night follows day, the university president issued a mealy-mouthed statement, calling on all members of the university community "to be alert to the rights and dignity of all our people and also alert to racial and other insults." All this in reaction to a guy trying his hardest to prove that he's not a racist. At least they didn't strap him into Dartmouth's Race-O-Meter. Mr. Stein, contributing editor to City Journal (from which this is adapted), is the author of "The Girl Watchers Club," just out from HarperCollins. 1. The mass murderer who blew up the bus in Jerusalem yesterday was not only a member of the PLO under Arafat's direct command and control, he was employed as a "policeman" by the Palestinian Authority, getting his salary from Arafat. 2. A Note from the editor of the Jewish World Review: Dearest readers: A few moments ago, my heart sank. Going through my e-mail, I learned that one of this publication's periodic contributors, Chezi Goldberg, who dedicated his life to working with "at risk" teens and who was originally from Toronto and living in Jerusalem, was killed in today's bus bombing. But what is so eerie was not his death --- that stung and I'm still feeling sick over it. And I mean SICK! What stung were the near prophetic words in one of his essays. It's the middle of the day. I understand many subscribers are busy. But PLEASE take a moment and read these essays. And then forward them to somebody you know --- and ask them to do the same. It's important that his words move over the web no less than the jokes we always forward! I'm CERTAIN that after reading the two articles you will agree with me. PLEASE do it for Chezi. Do it for all of us. PLEASE Binyamin L. Jolkovsky, Editor in Chief http://www.jewishworldreview.com/ 3. We have often commented on the antics of Uri Avnery. Avenry heads a splinter anti-Israel extremist group called "Gush Shalom" www.gush-shalom.org, no doubt funded by the usual overseas ill-wishers. Avnery is considered the father of Israeli anti-Zionism and wrote a book "Israel without Zionists" back in the late 1960s. He is so extremist that when his own mother died, she cut him out of her will and declared in her will that she regards him as a traitor. He has been compared by many to Lord Haw Haw. Mikey Lerner of Tikkun regularly runs Avnery's ravings and endorses them. I guess Lerner runs the rebuttals of Avnery on the same web page on which he posts a photocopy of his Rabbinic ordination certificate and the transcript of his studies from Rabbinic seminary.... Avnery runs ads in the Israeli press for his movement, paid for by Guess Who. They inevitable involve attacks on Israel and defense of Palestinian hatred of Jews. But today's ad in Haaretz by Avnery goes a bit beyond his usual fare. Avnery writes a short screed under the title "Only with Violence/Force" in which he defends the Hizbollah having kidnapped the three Israeli soldiers and holding their bodies as extortionate bargaining chips to force Israel to release the hundreds of imprisoned terrorists. You see, explains Avnery, it is all Israel's fault. Had Israel voluntarily released all the terrorists long ago, the Hizbollah would have had no reason ro grab Israeli hostages in the first place to extort the release of the terrorists. SO because Israel was obstinate and "only understands the use of force" (his words), it is all the Sharon government's fault. Avnery does not consider the possibility that executing the 450 terrorists would also have removed any incentive for the Hizbollah to grab bargaining chips. Someone just asked me why Israel has not tossed Avnery into "administrative detention", which is usually used to hold terrorists and occasionally Kahanists. I do not have a good answer. 4. I am Ashamed to be an Israeli By Steven Plaut I have spent most of the past 12 years being ashamed to be an Israeli. Israeli governments made me ashamed, and they did so by abasing, disgracing and humiliating me as a Jew and as an Israeli. I have been ashamed for 12 years at being an Israeli because this was the period in which the governments of Israel abandoned the struggle for Jewish national survival. They stopped trying to defend me and all other Jews. They lectured me that it was my fault that the Arab fascists were attacking Jews, and that it was within my power to stop the carnage if only I would agree to demean myself sufficiently, to grovel before the terrorists of the Middle East, and to appease the anti-Semites. I could achieve peace if I would agree to place my neck in an Arab noose, but if I refuse to do so then I would be the impediment to peace and my obstinacy would be to blame for all further carnage. For 12 years, my government pursued a policy of defending me and my family by abandoning all attempts to defend us. My government decided to pursue peace by pretending that war did not exist. After two millennia of anti-Semitism, my government decided that anti-Semitism does not REALLY exist, and that when people randomly murder Jewish children it is because they have some legitimate grievances, because they have suffered, and because Jews have shown them insufficient sensitivity. My government implemented policies based on the presumption that the making of concessions to blood-thirsty terrorists would be rewarded with moderation and goodwill, that importing armed Nazis into the suburbs of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem would cause them to seek peace. My government followed policies based on the notion that the Jews were evil, insensitive, and selfish. My government decided that if Jews would only "share" their land and resources with those who rule the entire territory from the Atlantic Ocean to Central Asia, that is, with those who refuse to agree to any "sharing" that allows a Jewish state to exist anywhere in the Middle East, then there would be peace. My government decided that rewarding terrorists for violence would end violence, an dthen told me that there was simply no alternative to coddling terrorists and nazis. My government pursued peace by pretending that war did not exist. My government sought peace through arming and bankrolling terrorists. My government decided that anti-Semitism can only be overcome by redressing the "underlying grievances" that it reflects. My government fought terrorism by not fighting it, and by trying to appease it. My government insisted that I must coddle anti-Semites and terrorists, and must pander to their agenda and desires for there is no other choice. My government over the past 12 years preached to me that it was my own pride and my parochial patriotism that was the obstacle to peace. It told me I must seek peace through self-abasement and self-humiliation. My government told me that if I would show willingness to compromise, then so would the Arabs. My government has been wrong about everything, but refuses to admit it has been wrong about anything. My government decided that Palestinians are a "nation" and that chunks of my Jewish lands were in fact "Palestinian lands". My government decided that Arabs may freely live any place they wish anywhere in the land of Israel, but I may not live freely where I might choose if it happens to be across the "Green Line". My government instituted discrimination against me and against other Jews in the name of "affirmative action", quotas and preferences for Arabs and directed against me. My government fought for my survival through cowardice and endless "restraint", turning my other cheek against my will, pursuing endless "goodwill gestures", which only enflamed the violence. It did so despite the fact that I and my fellow Israeli citizens voted repeatedly to revoke the "Oslo approach" and voted in favor of pursuing war against our enemies, not appeasement. My government abandoned all of northern Israel to the mercies of the Hizbollah rockets, now aimed at me in the thousands. My government abandoned the Jewish towns near the Gaza Strip to rocket barrages from the PLO. I have spent the past 12 years cringing in shame. My government made me feel that way. But I have NEVER felt as ashamed at being an Israeli as I did this week, when my government decided to reward the Hizbollah for murdering three of my fellow citizens in cold blood. My government also abandoned Ron Arad, releasing his kidnapper, rewarding the terrorists who kidnapped him, who "sold" him to Iran and possibly murdered him. My government decided to release nearly 450 murderers with blood on their hands in order to "buy" the release of the carcasses of three of my fellow citizens who were murdered by the Hizbollah after they had been kidnapped by it. My government had abandoned southern Lebanon to the Hizbollah and assured me there would be complete tranquility thereafter. After the farcical Israeli "withdrawal" ordered by my government, the Hizbollah has fired almost daily into Israel, has sent in terrorists who murdered Israeli civilians, and snatched the three soldiers (two Jews and one Bedouin Arab) whose bodies were released this week, after murdering them in cold blood. Last week the Hizbollah murdered one more army officer working a bulldozer; in response my government punished some empty Hizbollah buildings. The prisoner "deal" was possible only because my government refuses to execute the murdering savages, the terrorists. My government thinks capital punishment is inhumane, and its absence has made possible the murders of 1300 of my fellow countrymen. That is like twenty two September 11ths, when measured proportional to population. The Hizbollah also held as prisoner a man who had entered Lebanon for criminal purposes, possibly a drug deal to pay off his gambling debts. I opposed releasing any terrorists to get him released. I might have considered agreeing to release a handful as payment to the Hizbollah to keep him imprisoned there, if he is indeed a drug smuggler. My government decided to respond to the murders of the three POWs by rewarding their murderers, not by converting three Hizbollah towns into large parking lots, not by bathing the Hizbollah leaders in napalm. My government signaled to all my fellow citizens that it was unwilling to avenge our deaths. My government let every Israeli soldier know that his life would be worthless if captured by the enemy because my government would always seek "deals" with those who murder POWs. My government made it known that by grabbing some Israelis as hostages, anyone could obtain any concession they want from my country. My government also let every soldier know that, if captured in war, he would be abandoned to his fate by my government. My government agreed to this "deal" with the Hizbollah, a deal that spit on the family of missing Israeli airman Ron Arad. The man who kidnapped and "sold" Arad has been released by my government as payment for the release of the common criminal. My government is trying to cover its shame by boasting that it "held out tough" and refused to release the baby-murdering terrorist Samir Kuntar, the man who murdered the members of the Haran family in Nahariya. My same government boasts that it would have released this arch-murderer had the Hizbollah so much as told Israel where Ron Arad (or his grave) is. So much for "standing tough". My government is a disgrace. My government practices cowardice and pretends it is courage. My government displays indifference to the Israelis who will now be murdered by those released terrorists and murderers. My government had the gall to pretend it was acting out of compassion and morality when it signed this capitulation, when it placed that smirk on the face of the Hizbollah chief terrorist, boasting of his victory. To drive home the point that the "deal" proves to the world that the Jews are on the run, the terrorists blew up a bus in Jerusalem, the same Jerusalem they pretend is holy to them, as part of celebrating the stampede of Jewish flight. After all, the Hizbollah was being rewarded for terror, so why should not the Palestinians follow their lead in obtaining Israeli surrender? The bus atrocity in Jerusalem was carried out by the "Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades," a PLO terror group under the direct command and control of Yassir Arafat. My government pretended it was suddenly acting out of Jewish ethical values. My government would not know a Jewish ethical value if it popped up in its face. My government pretends there is a "Part B" to this capitulation, in which information about Ron Arad will be released. I do not belive them. I think my government is lying to window-dress this act of cowardice. As I watch the victory smile on the mug of the Hizbollah Chief Terrorist, my own government makes me cringe. My government makes me ashamed of being an Israeli. (Here is how someone else sees the "deal". http://israelnn.com/news.php3?id=56739 and http://israelnn.com/news.php3?id=56728) Wednesday, January 28, 2004
1. Yigal Tomarkin is Israel's answer to the famous junkyard in Sanford and Son. An "artist" specializing in making rusting eyesores that have enraged more than one group of residents who have to look at them. Tomarkin is probably even better known for his racist and anti-Semitic bon mots, a partial list of which appears in the Jerusalem Post piece below. Now if you still had any doubts that Yossi Beilin and Shulamit Aloni were really calling all the shots for the Ariel Sharon government, then you should know that the Sharon Likud government, elected to end groveling leftist anti-Jewish Israeli Oslo self-hatred, has just decided to give the sameTomarkin a national prize for his "art". Can Dror Feiler, the kapo pro-terror "artist" in Sweden, be far behind? As background, here are some old Plaut pieces on Tomarkin: Yigal Tomarkin is Israel's official Sculptor of Junk. He is a geezer and vintage member of Israel's bohemian artsy-shmartsy set, who specializes in spouting Far-Leftist anti-Orthodox poppycock and in building rusting eyesores all over the country. His art looks like something taken from the back lot at Sanford and Son. We have had many an occasion to comment on the aging Junkster in the past. First, Tomarkin is famous for saying that when he watches Orthodox Jews walking about he can really understand why the Nazis wanted to murder all the Jews. His art has triggered mass protests by Israelis demanding that it be removed from their streets lest it lower their property values. But perhaps the most theatrical Tomarkin affair was one in which Tomarkin was involved in the theft of a statue from a town square in Europe, which turned up in Tomarkin's own studio after he had altered it. Haifa's weekly Kolbo July 4, 03 carries an interview with the Michaelangelo of junk, and reveals some other juicy tidbits from his bio. Two years ago Tomarkin got involved with the cops because he had been smacking around his misses, choked her, and threatened to kill her. At one point he took a pistol and pointed it at his own head and threatened to make her watch his transformation into a Tomarkin sculptured original. Tomarkin claims the Israeli Secret Service put his wife up to bringing the charges as part of some sort of Chamishite conspiracy against him. The Attorney General indicted him for all this, but last week cancelled up on grounds that the couple claimed they had resolved things. Tomarkin is 70 and the Misses is 42. Tomarkin however is angry that the police gave him back his guns after making them impossible to fire. Personally, I think they would make a far more aesthetic sculpture than anything else he has rusted up. and also Tomarkin makes "sculptures" that are rusting hulks and eyesores, sure to lower the property values of anything within sight of them. The largest collection of his junk sits atop a mountain at Kochav Yarden, near Beit Shean, I guess because placing it anywhere else might arouse the masses in revolt. (I think it is divine justice that any ghosts of Crusaders haunting the old fortress there next to his art have to look at it.) Naturally, Tomarkin is defended by the same sorts of professional artistic pontiffs who defend the Christianity-in-Excrement art in the US against critics like Giuliani, the same people who dismiss you as a Philistine if you cannot see anything creative and aesthetic in a blank white canvass with a piece of snot in its corner. In any case, Tomarkin routinely argues that his works are sacrosanct and no one should be able to remove or "improve" or tamper with them, no matter how ugly or where they sit. Tomarkin is in some ways a symbol of all that is wrong with an Israel where radical secularism and post-Zionism have created an atmosphere in which Dana International, Yair Lapid and Ping Pong are High Culture. Tomarkin in some ways is the symbol of Tel Aviv bohemianism, and I would like to remind you all that the term "Tel Aviv" appears in the Book of Ezekiel referring to a distant backwaters in Iraq whither the Judeans were exiled, far away from culture and Zion. And now Tomarkin has joined the forces of Junkyard Psycho-Crime. Let me explain. There operate around the globe, or at least in wealthy countries, activist groups whose purpose in life is to rid the world of psychiatry. Specifically they battle against the institutionalization of the mentally ill and the psychotic. Inspired by such deep forms of Hollywood policy analysis as "One Flew Over the Cuckoo Nest", these groups want all institutionalization in psychiatric wards ended because it is oppression. In large part, it is thanks to such anti-psychiatry fringe groups that the United States is now host to hundreds of thousands of psychotics who live on the streets, eat from garbage cans, talk to themselves, and die from tuberculosis and similar diseases of the Third World. There are many good discussions of this contribution of anti-psychiatry to mass homelessness, none better than Rael Jean Isaac's book: "Madness In the Street" by Rael Jean Isaac and Virginia C. Armat. Anyway, Tomarkin - the same King of Junkyard Art -has now gotten involved in crime with some of these anti-psychiatry lunatics. One such anti-psychiatry group operates in Israel, and it has links with a much larger such group in Germany, no doubt loosely tied to some radical Greens there. In Germany, the anti-psychiatry group has targeted a German psychiatrist who lived before World War II, named Karl Buhnhofer (spelling?). He was regarded as a leading thinker in German psychiatry and there were two busts in his honor in front of two leading German psychiatric hospitals, one hospital named after him. He is somewhat controversial, mainly because he thought psychotics should not have children and is believed to have certified as psychotic some people after Hitler came to power. It is not completely clear what his politics were and some say he was an anti-Nazi. In any case, his son - a Christian pastor - was strongly anti-Nazi and later was killed for this in a concentration camp. The German anti-psychiatry movement hates him, less because of suspicions about his ideology and more because they hate psychiatry. Two years ago the two busts of Buhnhofer suddenly disappeared from Berlin and all signs pointed to the loony anti-psychiatry fringe. The same day they disappeared a sign appeared on one hospital demanding it be renamed for Princess Diana instead of Buhnhofer. And then the two stolen sculptures suddenly showed up in the "studio" of Yigal Tomarkin. (Haaretz June 8, 2000) No doubt passed on to him by the Israeli affiliate group of the Psychoteutons. Tomarkin then took the two busts, sliced and defaced them, adding things like male sexual organs to the heads, and then displayed his handicraft at the Tel Aviv Cinematek. Eventually it was realized the "art" was in fact stolen and defaced sculpture from Berlin, and they were shipped back to Germany to some sort of theater. Tomarkin has not been charged with any crimes in Israel, a fact that is in and of itself a severe crime you might want to discuss with the Minister of Police. Here is what the Jerusalem Post has to Say about it: A prize too far Jan. 28, 2004 The prestigious Israel Prize was awarded for the first time in 1953. It took it some 40 years to spawn controversy. That began when Education Minister Shulamit Aloni insisted on honoring someone outside the accepted consensus ? Prof. Yeshayahu Leibowitz, who had referred to IDF soldiers as "Judeo-Nazis." Ever since the floodgates opened, the prize has been increasingly associated with controversy. The latest was visited upon us yesterday with the announcement that sculptor Yigal Tumarkin will be this year's arts category winner. Education Minister Limor Livnat, hardly Aloni's political twin, phoned to congratulate him. She was equally chipper last year about awarding the prize to painter Moshe Gershuni, until he refused to attend the ceremony and was denied the NIS 50,000 prize by order of the High Court of Justice. It must be admitted that the choices of the Israel Prize committees are getting stranger and stranger. Consensus is by no means synonymous with quality. Consensus doesn't necessarily negate greatness, but can mean mediocrity. History often vindicates creators who were rejected by their peers in their day. It relegates to oblivion others who enjoyed ephemeral celebrity in a given period. But bestowers of national honors aren't prescient art historians. State accolades mean collective appreciation of the prize laureate's life's work. If collective plaudits for a given individual are impossible, then perhaps that individual will have to continue without a state prize. Alternatively, if the state award-givers cannot steer clear of discord, perhaps it's time to reconsider the Israel Prize altogether. It's not sacred. The prize isn't a must. Yigal Tumarkin is no stranger to controversy. He first scandalized post-Holocaust Israeli opinion in the early Fifties when he broke the taboo of those years and moved back to his native Germany, from which he fled in 1933. But Tumarkin and scandals became inseparable ever since. He once said he wished he had gunned down Raphael Eitan and Rehavam Ze'evi. He branded then Tel Aviv mayor Shlomo Lahat "Papa Doc" for proposing to relocate Tumarkin's upside-down glass pyramid Holocaust memorial from outside city hall. Tumarkin has fashioned a pig wearing phylacteries, and on November 4, 1988 told Tel Aviv Magazine that when seeing haredi Jews he can understand the Nazis. By way of retracting that, he published an op-ed in Hadashot 10 days later, writing that, "The outward strangeness of the Jew and the pretentiousness of the notion that God chose us... caused violent surrounding cultures to clash... with this arrogant minority... The image of the cunning, ambitious scoundrel, lending money at exorbitant interest, turned the bent, hook-nosed bearded Jew into the enemy of civilization... which didn't help belatedly enlightened Jews." That eventually cost Tumarkin Yad Vashem's Zussman Prize, which curiously enough was awarded the artist known for insisting that "the Jewish Holocaust wasn't the only holocaust." The Yad Vashem steering committee later rescinded its decision, but not before Tumarkin was turned into another trendy victim of the repression of free expression. Shas MK Eli Yishai reminded the public yesterday of Tumarkin's slurs against Sephardi Jews, which moved the sculptor to immediately reiterate that "Moroccan Jews are indeed crybabies" and "ought to stop burdening us with so many poor children." In 1997 the Israel Prize for journalism was to go to Shmuel Shnitzer. The High Court denied it to him because of one op-ed alluding to the high numbers of HIV-positive Ethiopian immigrants. That was a minor glitch in comparison to Tumarkin's notorious volubility. In January 1998, 26-year-old Tatiana Soskin was imprisoned for two years for drawing a caricature depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a pig. Tumarkin's pig with phylacteries is no less offensive. We agree that extreme insults against an entire public must be taken seriously, and sometimes even punished. But if so, than how is it defensible not only to tolerate such hateful words against fellow citizens, but to celebrate and reward those who say them? The Israel Prize awards committee could hardly have been oblivious to Tumarkin's troubling record. He isn't just naughty and cute. The committee members didn't arrive here yesterday from a faraway galaxy. They know whom they nominate. They knew the nomination would generate outrage, and justifiably so. In other words, they were being willfully provocative. This is foolish and superfluous, especially in our polarized society. The Israel Prize is quickly becoming a bane on the arts it is devised to promote, and a divisive luxury we can ill-afford. This article can also be read at http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1075185792306 2. This article is written by Bassam Eid, a "human rights activist" in the West Bank who spends far more of his time bashing Israel for defending its children than in documenting PLO abuses of Arab human rights (and for this is the darling of Betselem), but nevertheless can turn out interesting pieces on the state of human rights for those living in the PLO Reichlet. Take a look at: http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/387765.html 3. You will all be happy to hear that Israel's Far Leftist groups Gush Shalom, Yesh Gvul, and some others, all well funded by the usual overseas ill-wishers, will be testifying at the Hague AGAINST Israel, in the "trial" concerning Israel's security fence. They would much prefer no fence so that the Palestinian terrorists will have an easier time murdering Jewish children and other civilians. Tuesday, January 27, 2004

The New York Sun --- January 21, 2004 Wednesday Anti-Semitism: The French Crisis By MICHEL GURFINKIEL There is currently an upsurge of anti-Semitism all over Europe. In France, the European country with the largest Jewish community (600,000 to 1 million, or 1% to 1.5 % of a global population of 62 million), it is reaching alarming proportions. According to recent polls, anywhere from one-third to one-half of French Jews either feels threatened enough or unsure enough about the future to consider leaving the country or to advise his children to leave the country. This is not petty anti-Semitism, as we may have known it for about 50 years in North America and in most of Western Europe - a tale of marginal incidents being carried on by fringe extremists - but rather a development that affects the entire nation. This is not a case of mere anti-Zionism either. The contemporary French anti-Semites are explicitly targeting Jews and Judaism, not Zionists. And they make no distinctions between the Jewish people at large, whether the Jewish community in France, in Europe, or in Israel. And finally, this is not a case of bigotry, where anti-Jewish prejudice is derived from a lack of information about Judaism and the Holocaust. On the contrary, Judaism has been playing an important and visible national role in France throughout the last decades of the 20th century, and Holocaust awareness or pieties about the Holocaust are deemed to be part and parcel of the contemporary national culture of France. The 16th of July, the anniversary of the infamous roundup of Parisian Jews in 1942, is now a national day. Every school where Jewish pupils were arrested either by the German Gestapo or the Vichy France police has been turned into a national landmark. For all that, the new anti-Semitism has been gaining ground day by day. President Chirac, who first flatly denied anything like that was taking place, now acknowledges it as a major political concern. On November 17, 2003, he solemnly warned that "attacks against French Jews are attacks against France" and issued orders for a monthly review, at the highest government level, of anti-Semitic incidents. What Are the Facts? Since 2000, anti-Semitic violence has been rampant in France. According to the Interior Ministry, anti-Jewish violence has dramatically increased, to a yearly average of about 120 incidents in the 2000-02 period from a yearly average of about 10 incidents throughout the 1990s. Some 80% of all racist incidents in mainland France (except for the island of Corsica), are anti-Semitic. Some 20 synagogues, schools, and other communal facilities were destroyed either by arson or vandalization in the 2000-02 period. Two further cases of complete vandalization (one synagogue, one high school) occurred in 2003. Several Jewish shops have been attacked. Jewish people are routinely being molested or harassed in some areas, especially on their way to synagogue or school or at school. Several rabbis have been attacked and beaten in the street. Jewish youths have been attacked while exercising at public sports facilities. Jewish school buses have been stoned or even shot at. One case of abduction and one of near lynching in the street have been reported. And there is some reason to believe that two murder cases in 2003 were motivated by anti-Jewish hatred. Even if and when actual violence is subsiding, the climate of the country is deteriorating. Murderous anti-Jewish slogans such as "Death to Jews!" are routinely being shouted at large-scale street demonstrations. Various groups and even elected officials are campaigning for a global boycott of Israeli and "Israeli-related" (i.e., Jewish) goods, or for the suspension or the termination of academic cooperation with Israel or even with individual Israeli scientists, a move prohibited under French law. Explicitly anti-Jewish books have been published by major publishing houses, including books intended for children and teenagers, a market that, in theory, is strictly regulated by law in France. A radical Islamist preacher who publicly singled out some French intellectuals for being Jewish and therefore foes of Islam, Tariq Ramadan, was turned into a television superstar of sorts. So has an Afro-French humorist who indulges in provocative anti-Jewish jokes and statements, Dieudonne Mbala. Moreover, according to various reports and at least two recently published books ("Les Territoires Perdus de la Republique," edited by Emmanuel Brenner, and "La Republique et L'Islam," by Michele Tribalat and Jeanne-Helene Kaltenbach), schools and universities are becoming major hotbeds of anti-Semitism. In some cases, both parents and pupils insist on rewriting the textbooks in a more anti-Jewish or anti-Israel way, and dropping programs and debates about Judaism and the Holocaust, which are part of the government-mandated curriculum. In many places, Jewish students, teachers, and academics feel physically or verbally threatened or abused but get precious little support from principals or teachers and colleagues. The Response The response from the government and the other powers that be has been limited or ineffective for too long. It took more than a year, from October 2000 to November 2001, for the French press (some exceptions notwithstanding) to report extensively about the anti-Semitic crisis. Even now, some press and broadcast groups keep referring to "intergroup friction," as if Jews were engaging in racist violence as well or retaliating, which is not the case. The French political class has reacted in an even more awkward manner. Political parties and nongovernmental organizations didn't call for demonstrations against anti-Semitic violence, as might have been expected, or as it has occurred in the past (in 1980, 1982, and 1988), nor associated, on April 7, 2002, with a mass rally against anti-Semitism and terrorism sponsored by the Conseil Representatif des Institutions Juives de France (the Representative Council of Jewish Organizations in France). Under the socialist government of Lionel Jospin, until April 22, 2002, officials - especially at the Interior Ministry - were busy denying or downplaying the crisis. Things have improved since the 2002 elections, with the conservative government led by Jean-Pierre Raffarin. Still, the Interior Ministry remains very cautious in its estimates of anti-Semitic incidents and seems at times reluctant to enforce the existing antiracist laws, including a new law passed by the conservative-dominated National Assembly at the request of the conservative Jewish representative for the 9th District of Paris, Pierre Lellouche. An extremely small number of people have been prosecuted or indicted for anti-Semitic offenses. Those who have, unfortunately, have not been sentenced as heavily as the law permits. More often than not, French courts have turned down complaints of anti-Semitism. There is even a case of a Jewish family that was sentenced to a 3,000-euro fine for simply having lodged such a complaint. The Muslim Factor The new anti-Semitism in France has much to do with the unprecedented immigration from the Islamic world, both legal and illegal, that is currently reshaping the country. Conservative estimates - in the absence of reliable race or religion-related statistics, which are not allowed under French law - put the current Muslim population of France at 6 million. Some sources point to 8 million. The non-Muslim population is aging and declining. Its fertility rate is said to be close to 1.4 children for every woman, just like in most neighboring European countries (e.g., Germany: 1.3; Italy and Spain: 1.2). The Muslim population, however, is young and rising: its average fertility rate is said to be of three or four children for every woman. When it comes to the youngest age bracket - residents under the age of 25 - the overall ratio of Muslims rises significantly (25% to 30%). Moreover, there is evidence that intermarriage is common between non-Muslims and Muslims, that most interfaith families tend to associate with Islam rather than with Christianity, and that conversion to Islam in rising all over France, whereas the Christian faith and practice is plummeting. Islam may thus develop soon into a full-fledged French religion and culture, and even replace Christianity, at some point in the future, as the main religion of the land. Quite naturally, this sudden demographic and religious change is bringing about a social and political change: French Muslims are poised to play a growing role in the coming elections (most are French citizens by now, especially the younger generation, since France bestows full citizenship on any child born on its soil) as well as in education, business, professions, the Civil Service, the police and the military forces. The conservative minister of the interior, Nicolas Sarkozy, is in favor of affirmative action for Muslims. Perhaps as a first token of things to come, he put a Muslim prefet (governor), Aissa Dermouche, in charge of the departement (county) of Jura, in Eastern France. Now, it is a sad fact that traditional Muslim culture, both at the popular and the scholarly level, is deeply contemptuous of Judaism and the Jews. And it is another sad fact that contemporary Muslim culture - either strictly religious or semi-secular - is permeated by a more extreme, more radical, anti-Semitic philosophy, according to which Jews are not just despicable but intrinsically unreliable or evil and should be either marginalized or annihilated. As far as Muslim immigrants in France are concerned, they come from countries where these negative views are nurtured by religious education, political discourse, the educational curriculum, and the press. Once in France, they keep in touch with their country's culture and biases in many ways, including Arab television networks. The same considerations apply, to a large extent, to the French-born citizens of the Muslim faith, who are the sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters of the immigrants. French Muslims thus live in a cultural enclave and are well equipped to dismiss those parts of the dominant French culture that do not fit their own culture. Admittedly, some parts of the immigrant community are less prejudiced. As a rule, the more committed to Islam and Arab culture they are, the more anti-Semitic French Muslims tend to be. Conversely, the less committed they are, the more likely they are to reject anti-Semitism. This translates into ethnic lines. French Muslims of Arab descent are usually religious Muslims and unreconstructed anti-Semites. French Muslims of Berber descent (especially the large Kabyle community, estimated at 1.5 million) are usually more secular and more prepared to reject radical anti-Semitism and engage into good relations with Jews. As for militant Berbers or Kabyles, they tend to be frankly friendly with Jews and to entertain positive views about Israel. Old Anti-Semitism Reawakened The growth of Islam and of Islamic anti-Semitism is only one side of the problem. The other side is that it is reawakening and reinforcing an autochthonous French anti-Semitic tradition. Anti-Semitism, both right wing and left wing (the 19th century socialist, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, advocated "either sending back the Jews to Asia or exterminating them") played a rather important role in French culture and politics from the Revolution through the Third Republic, and was turned, with comparatively little effort, into a state policy under the pro-German Vichy regime, from 1940 to 1944. Even after it was suppressed as thoroughly politically incorrect in the post-Holocaust era, it has retained tacit or not so tacit acceptance in many quarters, including the political establishment. The man who headed the French Resistance against the Germans and Vichy, and then founded the Fifth Republic, General Charles de Gaulle, in 1967, shockingly described the Jewish people in a public speech delivered in the wake of the Six Days War, as "an elite, self-conscious, and domination oriented nation" - an anti-Semitic cliche. One year later, he alluded to "noteworthy Israeli influences" in French public life. The socialist president of France, from 1981 to 1995, Francois Mitterrand, was reported to have expressed similar views in private. He had been close to radical anti-Semitic circles as a young man and remained for all of his life a close (and devoted) friend of Pierre Bousquet, the head of the Vichy police during the war, and as such, one of the main organizers of the Holocaust in France. It comes, accordingly, as no surprise that the lesser ranks of French politics and public administration feel free to engage in radical anti-Semitic discourse or practice of one sort or the other. Vilification of Israel as an illegitimate "rogue state" or even as a "little s___ state" is not infrequent among senior civil servants, especially at France's foreign office, the Quai d'Orsay. Anti-Semitism has also extended, time and again, to mainstream politics, either in a thinly veiled form as "anti-Zionism" (a term favored by the left) or as "anti-lobbyism"(a euphemism in use at one well-known far right organization, Jean-Marie Le Pen's National Front). Quite obviously, the present anti-Semitic crisis in France should be addressed by the citizens of France first, either Jewish or not. Quite naturally, it should elicit appropriate concern from Jewish communities in the rest of the world. However, the fact that an important, democratic nation in Western Europe can be so quickly and so thoroughly undermined by anti-Semitism should also be matter of concern - and a warning - for all Western nations, including America. New York Post Online Edition: news JEWS RIP KERRY'S MIDDLE EAST PLAN By STEFAN C. FRIEDMAN and DEBORAH ORIN -------------------------------------------------------------------- TRIPLE THREAT: Jewish leaders ripped Sen. John Kerry's (above) idea to use Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter or James Baker to defuse the Mideast crisis. - AP Email Archives Print Reprint December 4, 2003 -- Presidential hopeful Sen. John Kerry set off a firestorm among Jewish leaders yesterday by saying Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton or former Secretary of State James Baker could be used as a special envoy to the Middle East in the Massachusetts senator's administration. Kerry's comments - made during what was billed as a major foreign-policy speech at the Council on Foreign Relations - were met with light applause at the event. But the proposal sparked shock and anger in the Jewish community, especially in view of former President Carter's perceived anti-Israel stance at the latest "peace summit" in Geneva. "I don't know whether to laugh or to cry. None of those three would be on my list," said Abe Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League. "Two are biased on the side of the Arabs - Carter and Baker - and Clinton tried and failed, so why would we use him again?" Clinton sought to craft a comprehensive Mideast peace deal in his final months as president, but failed. Israel's current government says it would never offer as many concessions to Palestinians as Clinton proposed. Carter over the years has been increasingly critical of Israel, and said at the Geneva conference that the inability to resolve the Mideast conflict helps foster terrorism. Baker was secretary of state under President Bush's dad, and was widely seen as tilting anti-Israel. Another prominent Jewish leader said,: "What is [Kerry] trying to do - commit suicide? It's at best naive and ignorant. Remarks like this are why more Jews are considering voting for Bush." Jews are among the most loyal Democrats, but Republicans believe they are making significant inroads among Jewish voters because of the president's strong support for Israel. Betty Ehrenberg, international-affairs director of the Orthodox Union, said, "Many in our community view Mr. Baker and Mr. Carter as tilting toward the Palestinians." 1. A poll just showed that about 18% of Britons are anti-Semites. My guess is that the percent of Israelis who are anti-Semites is about the same. They are known as Leftists. 2. "Lord of the Rings" is anti-Islam? http://chronwatch.com/content/contentDisplay.asp?aid=5701 3. The Tale of a Leftist "Rabbi": http://www.jewishsf.com/content/2-0-/module/displaystory/story_id/21336/format/html/displaystory.html 1. Now just in case you were not certain that Yossi Beilin's "Geneva Misunderstandings" or the "accord" signed by ex-spook Ami Ayalon and his terrorist friend were both designed to produce the destruction of Israel and a Sceond Holocaust, the proof is that large ads are in the Hebrew press today endorsing the accords, signed by a large group of French professors. Meanwhile, now that it looks like John Kerry is the up and coming Demoliberah, I suggest a closer look at him is in order. Did you know that he also just endorsed the Beilin "deal"? Did you know that he used to hang out and denounce America together with Hanoi Jane Fonda? Did you know: Senator Kerry often speaks of his war record and his military service during the Vietnam war. No one doubts that he served and by most accounts, served well. Kerry was also awarded the distinctive honor of a Silver Star. But some questions linger. The Silver Star is awarded to those who have exhibited ''gallantry in action'' while in combat with an enemy of the United States. It's true that Lieutenant (j.g.) Kerry was in combat. Indeed, his boat had been fired upon by the enemy. Kerry beached his boat and an enemy soldier broke and ran. Tom Belodeau, one of the boat's gunners, admitted this enemy soldier was wounded in the attack. Lt. Kerry then chased the wounded man behind a ''hootch'' where he ''finished him off.'' It was for this action that he was awarded the prestigious Silver Star. There were some who felt this act was not deserving of such an honor. Dan Carr, a Marine who served 14 months in Vietnam, questioned whether such an honor should have been bestowed on a man who killed a retreating and wounded enemy soldier. When young Kerry returned to the States, he began protesting against the Vietnam War. On April 23, 1971, Kerry testified before Congress about atrocities he had allegedly seen and heard about. He testified that American soldiers ''raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, [had] blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam.'' He stated there never was a communist threat in Vietnam. He joined a group called ''Vietnam Vets against the War.'' This group eventually abandoned him because the members realized that he was using their cause as a platform for his own personal gain. He was making it appear as though American soldiers were out-of-control animals, rampaging across Vietnam torturing and killing for sport. This was not their message. They were protesting the war. They werent accusing their fellow soldiers of being murderers and rapists. They had not seen any of the behavior Kerry stated he witnessed. One member remarked that Kerry seemed to be making it up to give people what they wanted to hear. Recently, Senator Kerry gave a speech at a Vietnam War Memorial, and any of the veterans turned their backs to him and walked away. They saw him as the man who called them war criminals in his testimony before Congress. The man who received the Silver Star for killing a wounded, retreating enemy soldier, had accused them of hideous war crimes. Michael Benge, a Viet Nam POW from 1968 to 1973, wants Americans to know that it was Kerry who blocked ''The Vietnam Human Rights Act.'' (HR-2833) Benge believes that action gave Hanoi the green light to ignore violations of human rights with the blessing of the United States. Senator Kerry can often be heard making the statement that the Bush Administration is controlled solely by ''special interests.'' Of course, he is untouched by this disease that he says permeates the Republican Party. The senator was the head of the Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs in 1992. He pushed vigorously to normalize relations with Vietnam. He visited Vietnam and praised them for being open and reported he was convinced they were not holding American POWs. Many families didnt believe him then and dont believe him now. But why would he be so anxious to normalize relations with the former enemy? The answer is special interests and money. Collier's International, based in Boston, was immediately awarded the exclusive contract to rebuild Vietnams infrastructure by the Vietnamese government. They made tens of millions of dollars from the contract. The chief executive officer of Collier's International was a man named C. Stewart Forbes. Interestingly, Senator Kerrys middle name is Forbes. There is a reason for that. C. Stewart Forbes is John Kerrys cousin. The New Yorker Magazine touted Kerry as the senator who defeated the ''mendacious POW lobby.'' Yes, Kerry helped defeat those tenacious family members who wanted to know what happened to their missing loved ones. His strange bedfellow in this battle against POW families was none other than fellow Senator and former POW John McCain. This committees final report in 1993 was chilling. It determined that American POWs were left alive in Viet Nam after the war but felt none were still alive. It makes no attempt to identify those left behind, how they died, who killed them, and where their remains are located. They were abandoned in life and death. Is Senator Kerry in full support of our intelligence gathering capabilities? His voting record indicates he is not. In 1994/95, Kerry proposed a bill to gut $1.5 billion from intelligence and freeze spending for two major intelligence programs--the National Foreign Intelligence Program and Tactical Intelligence Program. (S. 1826) The bill did not make it to a vote, but the language was retooled, the amount dropped to $1 billion, and it was finally defeated as S. Amendment 1452 to H.R. 3759. (S. 1826, Introduced 2/3/94) He voted to cut 80 million from the FBI budget. (HR-2076) In 1997, Kerry felt there that were no threats to the United States. This prompted him to place this statement in the Congressional Record: ''Now that the [Cold War] struggle is over, why is it that our vast intelligence apparatus continues to grow even as Government resources for new and essential priorities fall far short of what is necessary?'' (Congressional Record, 5/1/97, p. S3891) Twelve days after 9/11, Senator Kerry had the nerve to make this statement: ''And the tragedy is, at the moment, that the single most important weapon for the United States of America is intelligence. we are weakest, frankly, in that particular area. So its going to take us time to be able to build up here to do this properly.'' (CBSs ''Face the Nation,'' 9/23/01) After spending years trying to lay waste to our intelligence capabilities, succeeding at times, and failing at times, he now preaches about how our intelligence community was negligent. In ''Golden Boy--Part Two,'' his abysmal record on supporting the military will be covered. From the Homeland of Winston Churchill: I would be suicide bomber in Israel, says British Liberal Democrat MP By Ben Russell, Political Correspondent 23 January 2004 A senior MP provoked anger last night after claiming that she would consider becoming a suicide bomber if she was living in conditions faced by the Palestinians. Jenny Tonge, the former Liberal Democrat spokeswoman on international development, said that she did not condone the Palestinian bombers, but said she could "understand" their actions. Her comments, which came a week after Reem al-Riashi became the second Palestinian mother to carry out a suicide bombing, were immediately condemned as "sickening" by the Conservatives. Dr Tonge also faced a dressing down by Liberal Democrat whips over the comments to a campaign meeting at Westminster. The MP, who once called on Tony Blair to drop "bread not bombs" on Afghanistan, told Sky News: "From minor things to major things their life does not feel like it's worth living. "What I said was that I did not condone suicide bombers. But I do understand why people become suicide bombers. It's out of desperation." "And I guess that if I were in their position ... and saw no hope for the future at all, I might just think about it myself," she added. Dr Tonge, who will not be contesting her Richmond Park seat in south-west London at the next election, was condemned last night by Michael Ancram, the shadow Foreign Secretary. He said: "These comments will sicken those across the world who have lost loved ones to suicide bombers. There can never be an excuse for taking innocent lives, and I am surprised that Ms Tonge is voicing her support for such terror. "Charles Kennedy should say whether he stands by her comments and, if he doesn't, he should deal with her firmly." A Lib Dem spokesman also criticised Dr Tonge's outburst. He said: "She was expressing her personal views and certainly not speaking for the Liberal Democrats. We do not condone terrorism in any circumstances, either by suicide bombers or anybody else." Lord Janner of Braunstone, the Labour peer and chairman of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said: "I think that for a member of either House of this Parliament to say she has sympathy with it is awful." James Purnell, Labour MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, who is leading a delegation of backbenchers to Israel, added: "Last night the delegation met with victims of suicide terrorism from both sides. They would be appalled by what Jenny Tonge has said." 3. Ariel Sharon to expand affirmative action quotas for Arabs and discrimination quotas against Jews: State firms must have Arab directors By Yair Ettinger Prime Minister Ariel Sharon yesterday declared that every state-run company must have at least one representative of Israel's Arab community on its board of directors. Sharon, who made his announcement at a meeting of the ministerial committee on the non-Jewish sector, said that every one of the 105 companies must have at least one Israeli-Arab director by August of this year. The prime minister also ordered the civil service appointments committee, headed by retired judge Menachem Ravivi, not to make any new appointments to the boards of state-run companies that do not have at least one Arab member. Last August, the committee decided to adopt a plan proposed by the National Security Council for more equality of the Arab sector. Among the ideas put forward was a proposal to appoint an Israeli Arab to the directorates of all state-run companies and to increase the overall number of Israeli Arab in the civil service. Deputy National Security Adviser Reuven Gal told the committee that there are currently just 31 Israeli-Arabs on the boards of directors of state-run companies. Three years ago, the law regulating the running of national corporations was amended to introduce affirmative action in the appointment of Israeli Arab to top civil service jobs. Some 18 months ago, this amendment was expanded to include the law regulating the State Comptroller's Office. 4. PC Mindlessness: http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_np=0&u_pg=1640&u_sid=981030 5. 1. Welcome to the University of DUH! Wednesday, January 21, 2004 Palestinians easily scale Israel's $1.9 billion security fence Palestinians easily scale Israel's $1.9 billion security fence SPECIAL TO WORLD TRIBUNE.COM Tuesday, January 20, 2004 http://216.26.163.62/2004/me_palestinians_01_20.html TEL AVIV - Palestinian infiltrators have succeeded in breaching Israel's new security fence and barrier system. Israeli security sources said Palestinian infiltrators have scaled the four-meter high concrete fence by using a simple ladder. The Israeli project calls for the establishing of a 730-kilometer fence at a cost of $1.9 billion. Most of the project consists of a concrete wall or chain-link fence with sensors, cameras and military patrols. In one case, the sources said, Arab infiltrators brought a ladder to the fence in the northeastern West Bank. They quickly scaled the fence and entered a waiting car that took them to Israeli Arab villages. The infiltrators were deemed as Palestinians looking for work. The sources said an Israeli command center spotted the infiltrators but could not respond quickly enough to capture them. They said this constitutes a breach in security that must be resolved. 2. More pronoun problems: "Feminists and Their Politically Correct Speech Codes" Posted by Judson Cox Thursday, January 22, 2004 I received an e-mail from a young woman who was incensed that I used a masculine pronoun in a generic sense. The column that upset her, argued that western culture is superior to Islamic culture due to (among other reasons) our valuing of womens rights. She argued that the use of ''gendered language'' makes ours a sexist culture with no greater moral standing than Afghanistan under the Taliban. The English language holds the masculine form of a pronoun to be generic. If referring to ''an American'' as ''he'' upset her, the problem is her insecurity. However, her argument is symptomatic of the bias against American culture often prevalent in our colleges. In many Islamic societies, women are considered to be just property. Unmarried women who are raped are executed, because the loss of their virginity is thought to bring shame upon their families. Married women who commit adultery are stoned to death. Women who appear in public uncovered may be beaten and jailed. Women are not allowed to drive, work, or even leave their homes without permission. Not having a degree in Womens Studies (sorry, ''Womyns'' Studies), I believe that being beaten or killed is worse than seeing a masculine pronoun! There is not absolute gender equality in America since absolute equality is impossible. No two people are born with the same talents and have abilities to the same degree. Women are better than men at some things, from nurturing children to applying eye makeup while driving. Such disparities dont bother me; perhaps I should take a Mens Studies class (if such courses existed). Notice that my reader did not complain about languages such as French or Spanish, in which the feminine form is most common. If it is American, it is bad; if it is another culture, who are we to judge? There is income disparity between the genders; men generally earn a little more than women. This is mainly because women are more likely to take maternity leave, suspend their careers to raise children, pass up a promotion to spend time with their children or leave their profession when they marry. Individual women make these career choices. In charges of sexual discrimination, assault, or harassment, and in child custody cases, women are given legal preference. Due to affirmative action in hiring, women are given preference. If there is gender discrimination in America, it is not against women. While feminists get flustered over ''gendered'' language, my column is read in many foreign countries. I frequently receive e-mail from readers who identify themselves as citizens of Islamic nations. They may disagree with me on every point, hate America, and all she (oops, more ''gendered'' language) stands for, call me names, and threaten my life. However, some get it. They understand that America is prosperous because we allow every individual to contribute to our economy. Most foreign readers realize that America is morally superior because we protect the freedoms and rights of each of our citizens. They begin to view our soldiers as liberators. Like the youth of Iran, they understand their only hope for a better way of life is to embrace Americanism. Our leaders have had the guts (to use a gender neutral term) to wage wars when necessary, end western slave trade, free much of the world from Nazism, Fascism, Imperialism and Communism, and are now protecting millions from Islamic fascism. Our soldiers have fought and died for foreign peoples. Our economic system has brought jobs and prosperity to the ends of the earth. America has been a beacon, a force, an example, and a refuge for those oppressed under the boot of tyranny, and the fatwas of Mullahs. The average blue-collar American Joe, who serves his country, works his job, raises his family, pays his taxes, votes, drives a gas guzzling truck, shops at Wal-Mart, and puts a few bucks in the collection plate, does more to help the poor and oppressed of the world than feminists and liberals with their ''gender neutral'' politically correct speech codes. 5. Few today realize Ben-Gurions impact as a leader and politician, but his influence remains. Ariel Sharon and Shimon Peres, the two grand figures of Israeli politics today who each embody their wing of Israels political spectrum, were in the trusted circle of Ben-Gurion. Both see themselves as continuing his legacy. Peres was appointed as director-general of the nascent Defense Ministry at the age of 29. Sharon, at age 25 was appointed to lead the Unit 101 commando team that specialized in reciprocity for Arab attacks. Peres was a consummate politician, who would become a lifelong trusted aide, and was one of the several government officials in 1954 who was working to restore Ben-Gurion to power. Conversely, Sharon was a lifelong soldier. He had joined the Haganah at the age of 14, during the 1948 War of Independence, the same Haganah that Ben-Gurion commanded until he turned it into the IDF. Today, they are political polar opposites. Sharon is Israel's Prime Minister and Peres is the head of the opposition. Interestingly, both men make good arguments in how they see themselves carrying on Ben-Gurions legacy. The Likud (under Sharon) prefers to remember Ben-Gurions aggressive policy towards the Palestinians, and the Old Mans forceful military tactics. Labor (embodied by Peres) prefers to remember Ben-Gurions vision of sharing territory with the Palestinians, and his agreement to an equitable cease-fire at the end of Israels War of Independence in 1948. A close analysis, however, reveals that Sharon is more authentically furthering Ben-Gurions legacy. It is Ariel Sharon who now emerges as Ben-Gurion's true prot?g? not only in centralized power his party holds twice as many seats as the opposition but Sharon is also a realist, willing to consider the prospect of a two state solution. Ben-Gurion in 1937 did the same when the Peel Commission offered him a tiny state for the Jews. In February 1955, Ben-Gurion was the defense minister who supported strong reprisals against Egypt after a Jewish cyclist was killed and an Israeli border patrol was ambushed. This resulted in operation Black Arrow led by a young, career military man named Ariel Sharon. When Ben-Gurion was asked by Prime Minister Moshe Sharett to comment on the military actions he said, Our isolation is not a result of [the operation]; it came [about] earlier when we were pure as doves. [1] In this years memorial for the late Prime Minister, Sharons deputy Ehud Olmert delivered a message that was clear. Israel must depend on its own ability to defend itself and not on international support. This accords with Ben-Gurions vision that the dream must fit the reality we live in. It was Ben-Gurions belief that a partial Israel under Jewish control is better than a whole Israel with an Arab majority. Olmert highlighted the importance of the land of Israel saying, a Jewish state without the integrity of the land is better than the integrity of the land without a Jewish state. [2] Sharon is following in his mentors footsteps with regard to Israeli foreign policy, and he strongly believes that Israels strength will determine the reality only if he can ensure a relatively good relationship with Washington. It is through this prism that Sharon views the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; he wants to create an environment where they can co-exist, but not at the expense of the Jewish polity. As Prime Minister of Israel, my primary responsibility is to ensure the security of the citizens and State of Israel. There will be no compromise with terror. And Israel, together with the nations of the Free World, will continue fighting terrorism until it is completely defeated. There can be no peace with terrorism! [3] Like his mentor, Sharon also sees it probable that the conflict will continue and Israel will have to stand strong. As he stated at the recent Fourth Herzliya Conference Like all Israeli citizens, I yearn for peace. I attach supreme importance to taking all steps, which will enable progress toward resolution of the conflict with the Palestinians. However, in light of the other challenges we are faced with, if the Palestinians do not make a similar effort toward a solution of the conflict I do not intend to wait for them indefinitely. [4]Similarly, in 1938, Ben-Gurion said, The conflict had lasted 30 years, and is liable to continue for perhaps hundreds more. [5] Sharon has a strong chance of being perceived as the student who best exemplifies Ben-Gurions farsightedness, if Israel and America maintain their objectives, especially in the way they view the war on terror as a mutual goal, and if Sharon adheres to his policy of strength. Interestingly, at the present it is Sharon, unlike his fellow classmate, whose policies are supported by the majority of the Israeli public, and is the one they turn to when they seek a sense of security. Since the beginning of the Al-Aqsa Intifada, the Israeli public has shifted to the Right. This fact, attributed to Sharon on the one hand, is also due to the fact that the Israeli Left offers a less coherent, and acceptable message to its constituents. This suggests that Sharons leadership is comparable to Ben-Gurions administration, an administration that governed Israel for almost 30 years. As Michael Bar-Zohar highlights, For thirty years, from his conquest of the Zionist movement in 1933 until his resignation in 1963, Ben-Gurion was the leader of the Palestinian Jewish community and the State of Israel. [6] This is the same type of support and stability that is easily seen in Israeli society today. Moreover, Sharons ongoing quagmire with the settlements and the Palestinians is similar to the conflict-ridden situation Ben-Gurion faced during the Altalena episode, as Haaretz correspondent Bradley Burston writes, Should he [Sharon] make good on his hints, the enterprise would be tantamount to Sharon's Altalena, a decision to follow in the path of David Ben-Gurion, the thorny, controversial, knowingly divisive path of the prime minister Sharon first served as a thorny, controversial, knowingly divisive young military commander more than fifty years ago. [7] Sharons Ben-Gurionism has become pivotal to Israels future, since it highlights the need for both a strong and secure Israel, coinciding with a solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Sharons stance today proves how much Ben-Gurion influenced him, and the fact that Sharon himself wants to be seen as a Ben-Gurion and not as Ze'ev Jabotinsky shows that the political Left is falling by the wayside. The Right simply offers a more centered and far-reaching message. As Sharon moves Israel to the center, the Left has nothing left. NOTES [1] Bar-Zohar, Michael. CAN BARBIE COME OUT AND PLAY? -- Not If The Saudi Religous Police Have Their Way! by Denis Schulz "Psst! You want to buy a Barbie doll -- only 100 Saudi riyals on the black market? That's $27 US dollars. It comes in a plain brown package so no one will know what you've got. If you should, unfortunately, come across some of Allah's enforcers (the Saudi Authority for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice) they will think you have just purchased one of the hottest items on the Saudi toy market-a bobble-headed Osama bin Laden doll. Let them think what they will and keep quiet unless you're one of those who like being beaten across the derriere with a switch. If you prefer not to suffer the indignity of a switching, and you're afraid you might be caught, then you might wish to purchase a special Spanky & Alfalfa Tushy Pad for 100 Saudi riyals. That's also $27 US dollars. Place the pad where you think it will do the most good and let Allah's enforcers whale away to their heart's content. Remember to cry out and beg forgiveness. And please -- there are no refunds on Barbie dolls lost or damaged in confrontations with the police. "Psst! Hey, you -- want to buy a Barbie doll?" Because of its high birthrate and increasingly young population, the Middle East has become one of the world's largest toy markets. Doting parents spend about $1 billion dollars a year on toys, jewelry, and clothes for their children. And Saudi Arabia is no exception. One billion dollars is a lot of money even for Bill Gates. It will buy thousands and thousands of Osama bin Laden bobble-head dolls for little Mohammed, and hundreds and hundreds of coloring books depicting Allah's transformation of Jews into monkeys and pigs for little Fatima. Even if one adds the obligatory cost of a case or two of Jihad Cola -- Saudi Arabia's new national drink -- to the expense of a bobble-head doll and a coloring book, the average Saudi family will still have a few riyals left in the pocketbook; enough, perhaps, to purchase a Barbie doll, a stuffed animal, a Britney Spears cami and pants set, and, maybe, a Huckleberry Hound wristwatch -- all items considered evil by the Saudi religious police. Evil? Barbie is evil? How could that be possible? Does she come wrapped in a Victoria's Secret catalogue with a 1-800 number tattooed on her butt? Couldn't they cover her with a burqa? Her boobs aren't that big! Who would know unless they peeked? Oh, you say her blonde hair would give her away? And what would that do? Remind them of Richard the Lion-Heart? Everything reminds them of Richard the Lion-Heart! And let's face it, she's not exactly the Flying Nun. What are the Mullahs frightened of? Do they think Barbie is some kind of a jinn capable of casting spells on poor little Fatima; something that would put impure thoughts in her head; make her want to get behind the wheel of a Hummer; display her ankles on an escalator; hum 'do-wa-ditty' while preparing kumis for the Lord and Master; deliberately belch at inappropriate moments? Any of those? Oh, yes -- all of those and more. Barbie is freedom; Barbie is democracy; Barbie is capitalism; Barbie is America; Barbie is non-Muslim; Barbie is sex; and -- most importantly -- Barbie is a Mattel. A what? A Mattel? And that's bad? Oh, yes, according to the Saudi intelligence ministry -- apparently run by Abdul Mortimer and Hamid Bullwinkle -- Mattel is owned by the Jews! Owned by the Jews? Really? Who'da thunk! Yes, it's a vicious, sadistic Zionist plot to undermine Saudi culture, say the Wahhabis. Given half the chance, the Jews will turn little Fatima into a whore. They will take her out of the kitchen, cover her butt with a miniskirt, tuck some birth control pills in her purse, and set her down beneath a lamppost on some dirty street corner where she will be forced to compete with Irma La Duce for a livelihood. Obviously, anyone who would seriously entertain such an absurd scenario would be easily outraged -- unbalanced, of course, but easily outraged; and that accurately describes Saudi Arabia's mullahs -- unbalanced and outraged. They feel exactly like Jefferson Davis felt when John Brown crossed the Potomac River and invaded Harper's Ferry; like Lester Maddox felt when he was handing out those axe-handles in front of his restaurant; like George Wallace felt when he stood in the doorway of that schoolhouse in Alabama -- and just like Wallace they are saying, "Segregation today, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever!" So Saudi's God squad is going from store to store, confiscating Barbie dolls and stuffed animals; flowers and candles that might or might not represent non-Muslim religions; anything that might resemble a Buddha, a star of David, or a Christian cross. And these are the rascals that are supposed to be helping us in the War on Terrorism? Barbie, run for your life! Denis Schulz is the publisher of The MaxFlax Report. Background: The kapo art piece celebrating the woman mass murderer in Sweden, vandalized by a heroic Israeli diplomat, was supposed to be part of an "art exhibit" related to a conference on "genocide". Israel Radio reported that the genocide exhibit included 20 pieces of art from artists around the world. Three works were selected from Israel, all of which presented the conflict from a Palestinian point-of-view, while a pro-Israel piece of art was excluded following diplomatic pressure from Syria. 2. Israel Appoints Anti-Semite: Ministerial Committee Approves Anti-Semitic Appointment By a vote of 3-2, a ministerial committee has voted to recommend that Irineos, the anti-Semitic leader of the Greek Orthodox Church in Jerusalem, be appointed the official Patriarch of the Church. The appointment has great political and financial repercussions. In the vote, Ministers Meir Sheetrit (Likud) and Tommy Lapid (Shinui), who have long been in favor of the appointment, were joined by Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom (Likud), who had wavered for a long while before finally deciding yesterday to support it. Welfare Minister Zevulun Orlev (National Religious Party) and Jerusalem Affairs Minister Natan Sharansky (Likud) voted against. The decision must still be approved by the full Cabinet, possibly in its next meeting. Orlev is not optimistic that the Likud ministers will vote against the recommendation. He said that there is a "dark cloud hanging over this appointment," and that Irineos' loyalty to the State and his integrity have "not been proven." He said that he cannot understand why all those that have long objected to Irineos, such as the police, the Shabak, and others, were silent at the last meeting. The Greek Orthodox Church owns many properties in western Jerusalem, including those on which stand the Knesset, the Prime Minister's and President's residence, the Great Synagogue, and more. The Patriarch thus has the authority to carry out many large-scale real estate deals, and in fact Irineos informed Arafat a few months ago that he plans to grant him as "a personal gift" land in western Jerusalem. Copies of letters from Irineos to Arafat in which he uses sharp anti-Semitic terminology and openly expresses support for PLO terrorism against Israel can be seen on Arutz-7's website . On July 17, 2001, Irineos wrote, "You [Arafat] are aware of the sentiments of disgust and disrespect that all the Holy Sepulcher fathers feel for the descendants of the crucifiers of our Lord... actual crucifiers of your people, Sionists [sic] Jewish conquerors of the Holy Land of Palestine..." Irineos asks Arafat to support him in his quest to become Patriarch, promising that if he is elected, "rest assured, Mr. President, that the rights of our most beloved Palestinian people on the Holy City of Jerusalem will find the most 'hot' supporter." http://israelnn.com/print.php3?what=news&id=56444 4. Wall St Journal on Sweden's "ART": January 20, 2004 REVIEW & OUTLOOK Art for Politics' Sake "I pulled the plug on the three spotlights and plunged the exhibit into darkness," said Zvi Mazel, Israel's ambassador to Sweden, after attacking a display that glorified Palestinian suicide bombers in a Stockholm art museum over the weekend. If Ambassador Mazel wanted to expunge the exhibit, he achieved the exact opposite. Thanks to this undiplomatic art criticism, the work is now more famous than its creator could have ever hoped for. Maybe this is what Mr. Mazel wanted. His vandalism turned the artist, and the Swedish curators, into a highly public exhibition of the kind of European opinion that justifies terrorism against Israel. Entitled "Snow White and the Madness of Truth," the work showed a picture of a woman with an angelic smile who killed herself and 21 Israelis in Haifa last fall. Mounted on a small raft, the photo floats in blood-colored water. Swedish Foreign Minister Laila Freivalds said Mr. Mazel misunderstood the message of Israeli-born artist Dror Feiler. Maybe so, but Mr. Feiler, who has lived in Sweden for 30 years, made his compassion for suicide bombers crystal-clear. "I can definitely understand them," the artist said. "They have nothing to live for, so they look for something to die for." That's a bizarre statement to make about a pretty, 29-year-old lawyer and mother of two who murdered so many, but there's such a thing as artistic license, we suppose. Given what passes for "art" these days, perhaps Mr. Mazel's outburst should also be classified as a kind of political performance art. http://www.albawabaforums.com/read.php3?f=3&i=53428&t=53428 the israeli's art in sweden Author: ahmedsw Date: 17-01-04 20:39 I wanted to protest against that art because he put the shahida picture in a pool of pig blood which is totally against our religious !!! that jew is against the muslims and against the arabs he is ibn sitin alf sharmuta what he did with the shahida and the pig blood is totally unacceptable !!! Signed, Ahmedsw 1. Ah, the Israeli Left! Every days brings us new wonders from it. The Israeli Ambassador to Sweden takes action, praised by Ehud Barak, against the nazi pro-genocide "art" piece of the local ex-Israeli kapo, a work of "art" celebrating the woman suicide bomber who mass murdered 21 people, many of them children, in Haifa, a "work of art" accompanied by a poem comparing the murderer to Snow White and stating that she looked so beautiful there covered with red blood. And hours later the entire Israeli Left is out there defending the "artist" and attacking the Ambassador who stood up for Jewish dignity. The Far Leftist daily Haaretz runs an editorial, several Op-Eds and lots of letters to th eeditor denouncing the Ambassador and defending the piece of "art". Suddenly "artistic" expression is absolutely protected. Except the theater by the Ambassador is not. Now it is interesting to place this sudden absolutism of the Left regarding artistic expression in context. This is the very same Israelui Left that insists that any poster that shows politicians the Left likes in unflattering manner, such as Yossi Beilin or Yossi Sarid wearing an Arab kafiya, should be grounds for prosecution for "incitement". This is the same Left that cheered uncontrollably when Tatiana Suskind, the poor young woman who had made a poster of the Prohet Mohammed as a pig, was sentenced to a long prison term. This is the same Left that has campaigned to tear down and bulldoze a memorial stone marker for Baruch Goldstein, who shot up the Mosque in Hebron. This is the Left that wants the Kahanist groups all behind bars because some of them put up posters or write graffiti whose artistic value the Left questions. And this is the Left who argues that T-shirts that read "Where there are no Arabs there is no Terrorism" should be jailed for "racism" and "incitement". In other words, by defending this nazi obscenity in Sweden, the Left is showing how openly anti-Semitic and anti-democratic it is. Some in the academic Left are also chiming in. Here is a letter written by Prof. Amiram Goldblum, one of the founders and long-time leaders in Peace Now, circulated this week on the web: "The Stockholm Bully" Amiram Goldblum The aggressive response of Mazel to what seems to be an idiotic artistic expression, will remain in public memory as another display of Israeli violence, deriving from 35 years of occupation. That is also the source of the governmental response, praising the bully rather than recalling him and replacing him ASAP. Israel has enough rednecks in the academy, no need to have them as diplomats. Every time a gynonazi from the Palestinians has blown herself up as a murdering suicide bomber, the Left has whined that her actions prove how oppressed and suffering the po' Palestinians are, especially their womenfolk. Naturally, the same blubberings were heard this week after a mother of two from Gaza murdered four Israelis, including those guards who had just shown her pity, and wounded 9 others, two very seriously, when she made her children orphans. Now it turns out that the Feminist Take on the murderess has met with some snags. It seems, the mother was suspected by her husband of carrying on an extramarital affair and the only way she could escape being murdered by him and to "restore" her family's honor was to carry out the suicide bombing. She was coerced into carrying out the mass murder by the Hamas, which has now announced it will adopt as its general policy the coercion of women suspected of "moral offenses" to redeem themselves through such mass murders. SO much for the theory that Israeli "occupation" and brutality cause the terror.... My guess is that one of these moons, the Palestinians will start equipping pregnant women with explosives around the bellies to try to blow up Jews. You realize what that would mean? Why, it would be the Palestinian version of Roe vs Wade! Oh and I can guarantee you that at the next world Feminizt conference, the Palestinian women will be there wailing about the harshness of the treatment of women ... by the Israelis. 3. Inside Information on Dror Feiler, the Kapo who made the Swedish "art" celebrating the massacre in Haifa: Eliezer Feiler, the father of the "artist," was a member of the staff of the Israeli communist party. His wife - as self-portraired by the radio interview - is a devoted communist as well. They live on a kibbutz. Dror was raised as a "red-diaper baby". 5. The Left was having a fit this week when it turned out Yigal Amir, the murderer of Yitzhak Rabin, wanted to get married, to a divorced woman immigrant from the ex-Soviet Union. This is the same Left that always defends the rights for conjugal visits and rights to get married for Palestinian mass murderers. 6. This Letter to the Editor was carried yesterday in the Jerusalem Post: About doing harm Sir, - Ben-Gurion University's spokesperson, Amir Rozenblit accuses me of charging that a faculty member, Neve Gordon, urged an academic boycott of Israel (Letters, December 25). I did not claim that Gordon urged this particular boycott - though he did call for other, no less pernicious, boycotts of Israel. What I wrote was that Gordon exemplified the profound hostility to Israel shown by those who did push the academic boycott. Worse, under the guise of freedom of speech, Rozenblit and the university administration are trying to cover up the fact that Ben-Gurion University's radical faculty is exploiting its BGU status to promote a damaging, neo-Marxist agenda and spread venomous anti-Zionist calumnies against Israel. Granted, it is not a simple problem to handle. But denying it - while trying to discredit critics, whose speech apparently does not deserve protection - will not make it go away. It will only harm an important institution every Israeli would like to see succeed. DANIEL DORON Mevaseret Zion 7. The Poem that Accompanied "Artist" Dror Feiler's Piece of "Art" in Sweden that celebrated the terrorist woman suicide bomber who murdered 21 people, many of them children, in the Maxim restaurant in Haifa: http://www.makingdifferences.com/site/calendar.php?id=20 Snow White and The Madness of Truth 17/01 - 07/02 Plats: Historiska Museet Installation Once upon a time in the middle of winter For the June 12 deaths of her brother, and her cousin and three drops of blood fell She was also a woman as white as snow, as red as blood, and her hair was as black as ebony Seemingly innocent with universal non-violent character, less suspicious of intentions and the red looked beautiful upon the white The murderer will yet pay the price and we will not be the only ones who are crying like a weed in her heart until she had no peace day and night Hanadi Jaradat was a 29-year-old lawyer I will run away into the wild forest, and never come home again Before the engagement took place, he was killed in an encounter with the Israeli security forces and she ran over sharp stones and through thorns She said: Your blood will not have been shed in vain and was about to pierce Snow White's innocent heart She was hospitalized, prostrate with grief, after witnessing the shootings The wild beasts will soon have devoured you After his death, she became the breadwinner and she devoted herself solely to that goal Yes, said Snow White, "with all my heart Weeping bitterly, she added: "If our nation cannot realize its dream and the goals of the victims, and live in freedom and dignity, then let the whole world be erased" Run away, then, you poor child She secretly crossed into Israel, charged into a Haifa restaurant, shot a security guard, blew herself up and murdered 19 innocent civilians as white as snow, as red as blood, and her hair was as black as ebony And many people are indeed crying: the Zer Aviv family, the Almog family, and all the relatives and friends of the dead and the wounded and the red looked beautiful upon the white 1. The Israeli Ambassador has been called in by the Swedish Foreign Minister to be dressed down for sabotaging the piece of "art" on display at the Swedish Museum, celebrating the terrorist woman who murdered 21 people, many of the children, at the Maxim restaurant in Haifa. She is described by the "artist" as Snow White, pure as snow. My suggestion for the diplomat: Tell everyone that destroying the "art" was itself a form of theater and so legitimate artistic expression! 2. The Left is awfully upset at Muhammed Hativ. Muhammed is an Israeli Arab athlete from the town of 'Araba. He and his friend from Rehovot Tzachi Cohen are representing Israel in the mountain marathon run in Alaska. At the opening ceremony, Hativ volunteered to wear proudly the Israeli flag on his shoulders. He insists he feels completely Israeli and patriotic. Part of his training was done in Jordan with a coach who was one of the anti-Saddam Iraqi dissidents. The Left is very upset. What kind of Arab is THIS to be representing Israel? Any REAL Arab, the Left believes, should be out there throwing rocks at Jews and planning suicide bombings! Saturday, January 17, 2004
Among the Israeli or ex-Israeli leftist anti-Semites trekking the globe is one Mapplethropian "artist" named Dror Feiler. Feiler hates Israel with a passion and supports Jihad and Palestinian terrorism. He lives in Stockholm whence he spreads his views, including on the internet. You can read about his "art" and his support for Palestinian terror through it at http://www.tochnit-aleph.com/texts/feiler.html . He also claims to be a musician who makes "music and noise" and my guess is more of the latter than the former. Among Feiler's recent "artistic" creations is a work celebrating the terrorist woman who blew herself up inside the Maxim restaurant in Haifa, murdering 21 people, some of them Arabs, many of the children. Feiler seems to think this woman is a great hero, so he drew a portrait of her floating happily in a pool of Jewish blood. It was part of the preparations for some sort of Swedish conference on "genocide", which by all expectations will end up endorsing Arab plans to conduct genocide against Jews. The painting was on display in Stockholm when the Israeli Ambassador decided to respond to it in a manner almost unseen since the start of Oslo. He responded to it as a Jew and Zionist; he destroyed the monstrosity. Curiously, the Ambassador is an appointeee of Uber-appeaser Ehud Barak, who was on TV this evening cheering on the Ambassador for this rare act of Israeli self-pride and courage. Barak did NOT suggest that Feiler be granted the Israel Prize. Feiler runs a PLO front group called Jews for Israeli Palestinian Peace (JIPF). It is celebrated on PLO web sites such as http://student.cs.ucc.ie/cs1064/jabowen/IPSC/authors/DrorFeiler.php He also serves as head of European Jews for a Just Peace, which might or might not have other members besides himself. The news clip on the demolition of the artistic masterpiece painted by Comrade Abu-Feiler is below. But I wanted to mention another aspect of this business. It seems that Abu-Feiler is also a regular posteur and pretty representative of what is broadcast to the world from a Far-Leftist chat list operated under the auspices of the University of Haifa, entitled the ALEF list. Headed by a lestist professor of theater at Haifa University, this list operates on the University of Haifa computer and every message carries somewhere the University of Haifa name. Its contents may be viewed by those with strong stomachs at http://list.haifa.ac.il/pipermail/alef/ There you will find calls openly endorsing terror, calls for Israel's destruction, demonization of Jews and Judaism, endorsement of treason, all posted by Israeli and ex-Israeli far leftists, and a few fellow travellers. It turns out that Dror Feiler, the grand artiste of the Intifada, is one of the people who post to this University list. Consider http://list.haifa.ac.il/pipermail/alef/2003-June/001332.html or http://list.haifa.ac.il/pipermail/alef/2003-August/002144.html Feiler's email address is dror@chello.se, in case you would like to chat about art with him. Incredibly, he is not the most anti-Israel or pro-terror posteur on this ALEF list. The list by the way is closed to people who are not anti-Jewish and anti-Israel, and dissidents have been removed from the list by its moderator, Avraham Oz (no relation to Amos), for expressing pro-Israel sentiments. Oz has been in the news this week because his Dean shut down a "theater" Oz claimed to be running due to suspected misallocation of funds and other alleged misdeeds. The whole sordid business is described at http://www.ee.bgu.ac.il/~academia/2004_01_16.txt. If you would like to tell the officials at the University of Haifa what you think about an openly treasonous chat list on which people like Dror the Jihadnik post their "thoughts", please contact them. They and their emails are to be found at http://multimedia.haifa.ac.il/manage/html/html_eng/english_index.html Here is the rest of the news piece on the incident: Subject: Ambassador wrecks suicide bomber exhibit in Sweden Ambassador wrecks suicide bomber exhibit in Sweden http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull& cid=1074329035664 In what the avant garde might call a transgressive work of performance art, Israel's ambassador to Sweden, Zvi Mazel, wrecked Friday an exhibit in Stockholm's Museum of National Antiquities depicting a Palestinian suicide bomber. Located in the museum's courtyard, "Snow White and the Madness of Truth" depicted a smiling Hanadi Jaradat, the Maxim restaurant suicide bomber who killed 21 patrons and staff as well as herself on October 4. Her photograph was placed on a little boat floating in a basin filled with water dyed red. The ambassador was a guest at the opening of the museum's exhibition, which is linked to an international conference on genocide, "Stockholm International Forum: Preventing Genocide - Threats and Responsibilities," to be held January 26-28. Israel has threatened to boycott the conference if the museum's "Making Differences" exhibit on the Middle East conflict is not dismantled, Army Radio reported, saying that the exhibition breaks understandings Israel reached with Sweden. "This was not a piece of art," the ambassador told Sweden's SR radio news station. "It was a monstrosity." "For me it was intolerable and an insult to the families of the victims," he said. "As ambassador [of] Israel I could not remain indifferent to such an obscene misrepresentation of reality." Museum director Kristian Berg suggested that Mazel endangered those in the museum. "He pulled out the plugs and threw one of the spotlights into the fountain, which caused the entire installation to short-circuit and made it totally life-threatening," Berg told Swedish news agency TT, AFP reported. The museum director said he did not consider the artwork to be a provocation. "It is rather an invitation to think about why such things happen in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," he said. Swedish Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anna Larsson said the ambassador will be asked to explain his attack. "We will ask him to explain and from our side we will maintain that it is unacceptable to destroy works of art in this way," Larsson said. The artists behind the installation are musician Dror Feiler - himself an Israeli Swede - and his Swedish wife Gunilla Skold Feiler. Feiler, who described the ambassador's actions as "vandalism," announced that he would not perform as long as Mazel was present. The museum director requested that the ambassador leave, then escorted him out. Feiler told the Associated Press that his installation aimed to call attention to how weak people left alone can be capable of horrible things. "[Mazel] tried to stop free speech and free artistic expression from being carried out in Sweden," Feiler said. As a political activist, Feiler is president of Jews for Israeli Palestinian Peace, which initiated a campaign entitled "Jewish Manifesto: Sharon is Israel's Worst Enemy." Feiler describes himself as the "eye-bleeding ultimate composer of intifadic and eruptive lung-outs." On the web: Stockholm International Forum: Preventing Genocide - Threats and Responsibilities Have your say on this issue (moderated). http://www.motfolkmord.com/default_eng.asp Please include your first and last names, city and country. Email addresses will not be posted. Talkback This is demagoguery. The ambassador should have stayed home and then go on to a TV station to explain to the Swedish people that suicide bombings like the one depicted in the so called "art work" are the real reason for the security fence. Ronaldo Steinberg, Greenwich, CT, USA Ambassador Zvi Mazel, is a Jewish hero, and ranks with all the past Jewish heroes. His courage is wonderful, and he speaks for all the victims of the Holocaust, and terror. Richard Wenig, Show Low, AZ I applaud Israel's ambassador to Sweden, Zvi Mazel, for destroying this insanity. If the government of Israel had half of his courage, Israel would be free of homicide bombers by now. Svetlana Idelchik I think Zvi Mazel should be declared as persona non grata and be deported from Sweden. Obviously he is not right person for a diplomatic post. Matt Stormskar, Helsinki I think that the Ambassador acted as His conscience dictated and that is commendable. There are moments when You have to take a stand without considering what the World will say. We well remember that Art was very successfully used as propaganda. Art can be as deadly as any weapon and to accept such images and representations without strong protest is dangerous. 1. You all recall the world famous court ruling by our King Solomon? The one about the two mothers each claiming the live baby was hers? As you recall, Solomon said he would chop the babe in half. The true mother said No, give him to HER, just save his life. You see, she preferred he be raised by some other strange woman, not his mother, rather than die. All of which brings us to the Palestinian analogue of that momentous ruling. Yesterday a Palestinian mother of two young children, Rim al-Riashi, blew herself to bits as the seventh Paletsinian suicide bomber woman, in the Gaza Strip. She murdered four Israelis, and wounded 9, two of them quite seriously. You see, she preferred that her two young children be raised by a stranger rather than forego the pleasure of murdering Jews through her bombing them via herself. She had set off the metal detector, claimed she had a metal implant in her leg, weeped that she really needed to pass through the checkpoint, showed her ID proving she was mother of two youngsters, and the compassionate guards let her pass through. She then set off the detonator. Murdering the guards that had showed her pity. Oh and you know how Colin Powell wants to offset anything Israel spends on its Security Fence from US aid to Israel? You might want to write him and President Bush and ask how come the US has never offset from its aid to Egypt all the money the Egyptians are spending on building illegal tunnels into Gaza that allow the PLO to smuggle in explosives, like the sort that yesterday were used by the Palestinian Solomon... 2. More Oslo Success: Father of Baby Triplets Murdered by Palestinian Terrorists Ro'i Arbel, 28, father of five - including two-month-old triplets - was laid to rest this afternoon in Dolev, northwest of Jerusalem. At about 7:15 PM Tuesday night, Palestinian terrorists waiting on the side of the road fired at an Israeli car with four passengers not far from the community of Talmon. Arbel was killed on the spot, the driver and another passenger suffered "moderate" injuries, and the fourth passenger went into a state of shock. The driver managed to continue on until Talmon, from where the wounded were evacuated to a Jerusalem hospital. The terrorists are believed to be of the Fatah Al-Aqsa Brigades, under the command of Yasser Arafat. Ro'i leaves behind five children: two daughters Ohr (meaning Light, age 5) and Hodaya (Thanks, 3) and the triplets - two girls and a boy. The boy remains in a neonatal unit, and has not yet been circumcised and is therefore not named. 2. The ISM pro-terror activist hit in the head by a shot from an Israeli Arab Bedouin soldier last April has now died. The military may charge the soldier with manslughter. 3. One of the most comic things of recent days has been watching the Far Left have conniptions over Benny Morris. Morris is a professor of history at Ben Gurion University. He is a vintage "New Historian", who devoted most of his career to proving that Israel is a big evil bully that was the Goliath in 1948 against the poor Palestinian David, that Israel expelled the poor Palestinians in 1948, and was guilty of most of the other problems of the Middle East. But then about two years ago, Morris started having partial second thoughts. He repeatedly blamed the PLO for the Oslo violence, refused to endorse the calls for a Second Holocaust and destruction of Israel coming from so much of the Left, and criticized the anti-Israel Left. That ignited a bonfire of hatred against him by the Left. The one thing the Left hates more than anything else is when one of its own turns coat and challenges the leftist canon and theology. In web site after URL, the Leftists attacked Morris for his "betrayal". As it turns out, they were over-reacting, because Morris only partly renounced his earlier anti-Israel views. The best documentation of Morris' confused sets of pronouncements has been presented in a series of pieces by the eminent Efraim Karsh, a professor at the University of London, including in his excellent book "Fabricating History" (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0714650110/002-5812149-5068025?v=glance) and in some recent articles in Commentary Magazine. Morris is still proliferating assorted stories about Israeli "ethnic cleansing" of Palestinians in 1948-9 and war crimes committed by Israelis, even while antagonizing the Left. Then last week Morris gave a long interview in Haaretz, the Far-Left Israeli daily, in its weekend magazine. There he stated that Yes he still believes that Ben Gurion wanted to expel the Arabs living in what became Israel, Efraim Karsh's well documented debunkment notwithstanding, but that Ben Gurion would have been JUSTIFIED in doing so. He then went on and defended Israel's rights to defend itself against Arab aggerssion. He said that under certain circumstances, Israel would be justified TODAY in expelling its Arabs. The shrieks of outrage from the Left, especially the Tenured Left, were deafening. All this week, the leftist academics have been demanding an auto da fe against Morris. Some of the most shrill theatrics are coming from his colleagues at Ben Gurion University in Beer Sheba, which as you know has more than its fair share of tenured radicals and anti-Israel fanatics. So Ben Gurion University, whose reputation has suffered because of the activities and behavior of its leftist radical faculty, is now being assaulted by the Left for allowing a "Kahanist" like Morris serve on the faculty! Poor Ben Gurion University just cannot win.... The Haaretz Magazine is crawling with letters from leftist professors this week denouncing Morris, not for his years of "New History" anti-Israel "research", but for his endorsing what they call a "Kahanist transfer" solution. Among the many fine scholars joining the assault against Morris in Haaretz are Dr. Hagai Kim, who likes to call Israeli Arabs "Israeli Palestinians", Prof. Oren Yiftachel, whom you may recall as the geographer who had an anti-Israel article rejected by a British academic journal that is boycotting Israeli academics, Lev Grinberg, a Ben Gurion University faculty member with ties to Tikkun, and some others. 4. Syria has announced that there can be no peace between Israel and Syria as long as Ariel Sharon is in power, which I guess is as good a reason as any to keep Sharon in power. 5. http://www.jewishpress.com/news_article.asp?article=3267 Israeli Left`sAmazing Security-Wall Turnabout Posted 1/14/2004 By Steven Plaut Growing up, I always found one of the most bizarre things in history to be the dramatic turnabout of the communist movement the day Germany invaded Stalinist Russia. The communists and their fellow travelers were ferociously anti-fascist in the mid-1930`s, but were decided pro-Hitler from the time of the Nazi-Soviet Pact of August 23, 1939. Germany had already gobbled up Czechoslovakia within the framework of the Munich Agreement. Even before the Pact, Stalin had been carefully nursing a neutral position regarding Nazi Germany, hoping to deflect the German war machine onto the capitalist West. Stalin repeated his friendship for Germany at the usual Party meetings and congresses, and the Comintern -- Stalin`s international propaganda apparatus -- issued instructions for how good leftists must think. Hitler was in a hurry. After taking Memel from Lithuania, he was planning to conquer Poland before the end of the summer of 39. Stalin began a series of secret negotiations with Hitler. On August 3, 1939, Hitler agreed to Stalin`s terms for sitting by while Poland was destroyed. Germany never even bothered to inform its ally, Italy, of its plans. On the night of August 19 the Nazi-Soviet trade treaty was signed. When he received Stalin`s assent, Hitler pounded on the wall with his fists and shouted, "I have the world in my pocket!" On the night of August 23, 1939, the non-secret text of pact was officially released. Stalin collaborated openly with Hitler in dividing up Eastern Europe, with the uniform approval and applause of the worlds communist parties and the "progressive" Left. After the invasion of France by Germany, Stalin ordered the military occupation of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, and all three were ``admitted`` into the Soviet Union as constituent republics in July. In late June the Soviets also annexed Bessarabia and northern Bukovina. All this was done by way of an ultimatum to Romania. The Russians then used most of the annexed territory to create a new Moldavian SSR. Ah, but Stalin`s Russia quickly became a victim of its betrayal of civilization. Hitler was not simply going to war against the capitalist West, but had been planning all along to destroy the Soviet Union and annex its lands. In July 1940, Hitler had decided to prepare to attack the Soviet Union. In September, a German-Italian-Japanese Tripartite Pact was signed, and although it stipulated that it would not affect the relations of any of the three powers with the Soviets, a deterioration in Berlin-Moscow amity had become apparent. In November 1940 Molotov visited Berlin for further discussions of a vague and grandiose kind, but Hitler did not cancel his plans for attack. On December 18, 1940, he issued the directive for Operation Barbarossa, the code name for the invasion of the Soviet Union, to be launched in the middle of 1941. Within hours of the crossing of the Soviet lines by German tanks, the world communist movement reversed its political position regarding Nazi Germany by 180 degrees. As if speaking in the voice of a single man, which of course it was, the communist parties and their leftist fellow travelers became the most militant warmongers on earth, demanding that the Western countries attack German and its allies. Just days earlier they had been praising Germany for its campaign against Western capitalism, endorsing isolationism, calling for neutrality and non-aggression, demanding that proletarians from all nations cooperate, regardless of whether their governments were at war, and even praising some of the "progressive" elements of Nazism, such as its nationalization of some of the means of production. These were the very same people now marching against Germany, labeling it the epitome of evil, demanding support and solidarity with the Soviet victim of German aggression, supporting rearmament by the same Western nations it had been denouncing as imperialists in the previous breath. As I say, I always had a great deal of difficulty imagining and understanding how people could display such totalitarian self- abasement, such naked hypocrisy, as did that generation of the Left. That is, until I observed the turnabout of the Israeli Left on the issue of Israels security fence. >From Support to Opposition Let us note that the idea of building a security barrier -- composed of segments of walls, fences, and electronic gimmicks -- was long the official banner of Israel`s Oslo Left. The leftists wanted the wall built for several reasons. Mainly, they believed that such a wall would create a de facto separation of Israel from the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and behind the wall the Palestinians could exercise sovereignty or semi-sovereignty as a major step toward statehood. Israeli leftists presumed that once Israel erected the barrier, all Jewish settlers on the wrong side of it would be forced to leave. They also thought that once the fence was up, it would be much easier to block Israeli military incursions into "Palestinian lands." For years, the banner slogan of the Oslo Left in Israel was "Us over Here and Them over There." The wall they proposed to erect in the West Bank would reduce the number of terrorist infiltrations, as had the fence around most of the Gaza Strip and the security fence along the Lebanese border. All we need is some electronic gadgets and gizmos and terrorism from our Oslo peace partners would end, the Left assured the nation. The wall was the Left`s Master Strategy, a program to impose withdrawal by Israel from most of the West Bank under the guise of protecting Israeli civilians from terrorist barbarism. It was the Israeli Right that first criticized the idea of a wall. The main criticism was that it would not effectively end the terror. The Palestinians were already firing mortars and rockets over the Gaza wall into Jewish homes. What would stop them from doing so with new walls? And what exactly did the Left think the Palestinians would do once Israel abandoned the territory behind the wall? Take up quilting? The Right also feared the idea that the wall would be construed as a stage in Israels eventual withdrawal and abandonment of the entire West Bank to PLO control -- precisely the reason the Left wanted the wall. Ehud Barak had been one of the original promoters of a security fence for the West Bank. Numerous Labor and Meretz politicians endorsed the idea. Amram Mitzna won the Labor partys nomination to run for prime minister. He endorsed a security wall and unilateral withdrawal by Israel from the West Bank and Gaza. He was clobbered in the election by Ariel Sharon. Endorsement of a security wall for Israel was so enthusiastic and widespread on the Left that only one possible development could have turned leftists against the idea -- its adoption by Ariel Sharon and the Likud. While at first highly skeptical of the practicality of the wall and its ability to keep Palestinian savages from murdering Israelis, Sharon and his people were under enormous pressure to do something -- anything -- as the terrorist violence escalated. Sharon became convinced that it was worth giving the wall a try; better partial prevention of terrorist infiltration than none at all. Targeted assassinations by Israel of Palestinian terrorist leaders escalated at the same time, resulting in a reduced number of terrorist attacks and creating the impression that the partially-completed wall was somehow responsible. Shimon Peres cast the lone vote against the security fence when the Sharon cabinet approved it officially in June 2002. (He didn`t oppose it on principle -- it was the fences location that troubled him. Peres and the Left wanted the fence to trace the old pre-1967 "Green Line," signaling that Israel planned to turn over the entire area to the Palestinians.) Within weeks of the cabinet vote, the Israeli Left, which had been united for years in favor of a wall, did a 180-degree reversal of direction of the sort not been seen since the signing of the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact and its later collapse with the German invasion of Russia. Suddenly there was near opposition to the wall among Israeli leftists. Some even compared it to the walls around the Warsaw Ghetto, denouncing it as a racist way to "victimize" the poor innocent Palestinians. Others labeled it an "Apartheid Wall." >From Opposition to Confrontation The Lefts campaign against the wall has since moved beyond mere political rhetoric. In recent weeks, teams of Israeli leftists, together with anti-Jewish "anarchists" and loony communists from the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), have been attacking the fences that comprise parts of the wall and vandalizing them with wire cutters and other tools. The ISM thugs have flocked to the West Bank and Gaza Strip, where they devote themselves to trying to prevent Israel from taking military action against the terrorists who send suicide bombers into Israel. The ISM "peace activists" block roads, set up obstacles so tanks cannot operate, block soldiers trying to arrest terrorists or knock down houses of suicide bombers, and otherwise show how thoroughly they support Palestinian murderers. In at least one case they hid arms for some Palestinian terrorists, and they have attempted to hide wanted terrorists in their offices. They make no secret of their desire to see the end of Israel. They endorse the use of terror against Jews. Two terrorists who carried out an atrocity in a Tel Aviv pub were hosted by the ISM the day before they carried out the murders. Some have suggested that ISM really stands for "I Support Murderers." The Israeli troops dealing with the hooligans have exhibited a degree of restraint in the face of violent provocateurs without comparison in the democratic world. I bet that if a crowd of hooligans attacked the fence surrounding Barbra Streisand`s mansion in Beverly Hills and tried to vandalize it, they would be mowed down without hesitation. Over the past year, two ISM members became patron saints of terrorism. The better known is Rachel Corrie, a naive American-flag- burning, anti-Israel young extremist from Washington State. While trying to prevent Israeli heavy machinery from knocking down houses of terrorists and digging up tunnels used by Palestinians to smuggle in explosives, she placed herself in a position where the bulldozer driver could not see her. She was dragged down and crushed, and she died (probably as a result of the medical treatment she got from the PLO). The other near-martyr of the ISM, Tom Hurndall, is currently being beatified in the UK. Israeli soldiers were on a mission last April in the Gaza border town of Rafiah when they came under PLO fire. Hurndall was there, like all ISM provocateurs, to interfere with Israeli military operations against terrorists. At the time of the shooting, Hurndall, along with other ISM members and local residents, planned to set up a "peace tent" on one of the nearby roads to prevent IDF tank patrols from using it. When the firefight began, Hurndall ran out into the street and was hit by a bullet in the crossfire. His supporters claim he was just trying to shoo some Arab children away from the battle zone. Given ISM behavior in the past, it is at least as plausible that he was planning to serve as a human shield for the terrorists doing the shooting. He was hit in the head and has been in a coma ever since. Hurndall`s family and the ISM have gone on a crusade against Israel, claiming Tom was intentionally shot down in cold blood. The same people have long claimed that Rachel Corrie was killed deliberately, a victim of Israeli malice, rather than as a result of her own foolish recklessness. These folks have never come up with a good reason why Hurndall was running around in the middle of a firefight in the Gaza Strip in the first place, a firefight started by the very same Palestinian terrorists he was there to support and protect. But things have gotten curiouser and curiouser. The raison d`etre of the ISM is to promote attacks on Jews and delegitimization of Zionism, but the main victim of their agitprop turns out to be a Bedouin Arab! Yes, it turns out that Hurndall was in fact shot by a Bedouin soldier serving in the Israel Defense Forces. Of course, you would never know that piece of information from reading the British press. (Many people don`t even know that Bedouins serve in the Israeli security forces.) Too many on the Israeli Left take their cues from the Palestinian Authority, much the same way that communists in the late 1930`s and 1940`s took their cues from the Comintern. It bears repeating: No sooner had Sharon and the Likud begun construction of the security wall than the Israeli Left and its amen choruses around the world started a coordinated campaign against it. For the longest time, a security wall was the preferred recipe for peace endorsed by nearly everyone on the Israeli Left. Today, the wall is labeled a colonial aggression, denounced by all progressive leftists and people for peace - - people so opposed to it that they are willing to risk prison, tear gas, and getting shot in the legs to tear it down or rip holes in it. Uncle Joe Stalin would be proud. Steven Plaut is a professor at Haifa University. His book ``The Scout`` is available at Amazon.com. He can be contacted at steven_plaut@yahoo.com. 1. You know how the State Dept has been hassling Israel about it sroad blocks where it stops and searches Palestinians? Even Palestinians in ambulances (can you guess why it does so?) and pregnant women (can you guess why they are searched?). Well, wouldn't it be an embarrassment if the US were also operating security checkpoints on roads for security reasons? No, not in Iraq but in the US! Court OKs Roadblocks to Hunt Criminals Jan 13, 1:39 PM (ET) By GINA HOLLAND WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court, in a case watched anxiously by law enforcement agencies across America, held Tuesday that police may set up roadblocks to collect tips about unsolved crimes. In a 6-3 decision, the justices found roadblocks seeking such information do not violate the privacy rights of motorists. The court overturned a decision by the Illinois Supreme Court, which ruled that officers may solicit information from motorists only in an emergency. The case involved a man arrested for drunken driving at a Lombard, Ill., checkpoint set up to get information about an unrelated fatal hit-and-run accident. Justice Stephen Breyer, writing the majority opinion, said that short stops, "a very few minutes at most," are not too intrusive on motorists. Police may hand out a flyer, or ask drivers to volunteer information about crimes, he said. Lombard Police Deputy Chief Dane Cuny said the court's ruling was vindication for the department and "a victory for law enforcement and the public." Three justices expressed concerns the ruling could open up motorists to police interference without yielding useful information about crimes. "There is a valid and important distinction" between seizing a person to determine whether he or she has committed a crime and seizing a person to ask whether that person "has any information about an unknown person who committed a crime a week earlier," wrote Justice John Paul Stevens, joined by Justices David H. Souter and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The case was a follow-up to a 2000 Supreme Court ruling that roadblocks intended for drug searches are an unreasonable invasion of privacy under the Constitution. Breyer said that in this case, authorities were investigating a specific crime, and one that resulted in a death. He said the ruling likely will not lead to widespread roadblocks in towns around the country because of limited police funding and community hostility to traffic delays. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan said the ruling "will allow law enforcement in Illinois and across the nation to seek voluntary assistance from citizens in their efforts to solve crime." The Illinois checkpoints had been challenged by Robert Lidster, who was arrested for drunken driving. The roadblock had been set up at the same spot and time of day that the hit-and-run took place, in hopes of getting tips. Authorities said that Lidster nearly hit an officer at the scene with his minivan. Justices were told during the November argument in the case that the roadblocks are used in all sorts of investigations, like an effort in Utah to try to produce leads after Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped in 2002. In the partial dissent, Stevens said motorists will be trapped by the checkpoints. "In contrast to pedestrians, who are free to keep walking when they encounter police officers handing out flyers or seeking information, motorists who confront a roadblock are required to stop, and to remain stopped for as long as the officers choose to detain them," he wrote. The delays "may seem relatively innocuous to some, but annoying to others ... still other drivers may find an unpublicized roadblock at midnight on a Saturday somewhat alarming." The three dissenting justices said the case should have been sent back to Illinois courts for more consideration. The case is Illinois v. Lidster, 02-1060. http://www.supremecourtus.gov/opinions/03pdf/02-1060.pdf http://apnews.myway.com/article/20040113/D8023MH80.html 2. MK Boim: Put MK Barakeh on Trial for Treason http://www.israelnationalnews.com/news.php3?id=56167 Muhammed Barakeh, an Israeli-Arab MK who serves as one of several Deputy Knesset Speakers, has asked to testify against Israel in the upcoming partition wall "trial" in the Hague. He says he will reveal Israel's "war crimes." The Knesset website shows that Barakeh graduated high school, and though he attended college - he was Chairman of the Arab Student Committee in Tel Aviv University - he apparently never graduated. A member of the Communist Party, his profession is listed as "General Secretary, Hadash Movement." He is now in his second term as a Member of Israel's Parliament. Maariv reports that Barakeh sent a letter to the Hague Court on official Knesset stationery, writing about the "ghettos" in which Israel has "place hundreds of thousands of Palestinians," and decrying the "separation wall built on the occupied land of the Palestinian nation." The Arab Knesset Member also states that Israel uses the fence to prevent the PA residents from "basic services such as hospitals and schools." "The purpose of this plan is not to provide security for Israel's citizens," Barakeh writes, in total contrast to the government's policies, "but to embitter the Palestinians' lives in the hope that they will move east. This is a policy of creeping transfer." The Hague has been asked to prepare a legal opinion on the partition fence. Israel has long claimed that the fence was built for lack of choice in order to prevent continuing mass suicide terror attacks in Israeli cities, and is not meant to determine final borders. The Hague is not expected to adopt Israel's position. Barakeh's letter to the Hague has aroused Knesset condemnation across the board. Deputy Defense Minister Ze'ev Boim (Likud) says he will ask for a suspension of Barakeh's parliamentary immunity in order that he be put on trial for treason. "This is a disgraceful act, showing that Barakeh is a supporter of terrorism and a collaborator with the enemy." MK Michael Eitan, also of the Likud, said that Barakeh should be suspended from his position as Deputy Knesset Speaker. "Enlisting in the cause of Israel's enemies, while using the symbols of the State of Israel and with his title of Deputy Knesset Speaker, is a spit in the face of the Knesset and the State," Eitan said. Even Meretz MK Avshalom Vilan said that Barake's act was a "crossing of all red lines." Published: 09:02 January 14, 2004 Last Update: 10:28 January 14, 2004 Tuesday, January 13, 2004
1. Ah, the poor anti-Semitic lobby. What will the poor skinheads complain about now? Now that they can no longer claim Israel intentionally shot up the USS Liberty in 1967? http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1073881745637 Also: http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1065773796483 Now while we are on the subject, the Haaretz report on the same story confirms that the US had a spy or spies in the Israeli intelligence services in 1967 (http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/382291.html). Evidentally that is why the US never tried to use the USS Liberty affair to lambast Israel. The US already knew the ship was attacked in error in the 1967 War because its informers saw the primary intelligence. Only one little problem with this of course. Before anyone starts complaining too loudly about Jonathan Pollard's activities before his arrest, or before anyone justifies the punishment out of all proportion Pollard is serving, perhaps it behooves them to take notice of these US espionage activities in Israel in 1967. 2. Two other headline matters. Several people have been asking me about Sharon's new scandals being uncovered. How could I have advocated his election over the Laborites, I am asked. Well I hate to say I told yo so but I did. For years I have claimed that the Likud is corrupt and Sharon has been involved in dirtiness. I advocated Sharon beating Mitzna, who by the way is at least as dirty as Sharon, because better a corrupt and incompetent Likud government than a government of self-annihilation and risk of Holocaust from some Labor Party government, even if it were a clean one, which it has never been. Given a choice between incompetence and even corruption vs. treason, I think you know which I prefer. 3. Meanwhile it seems that Yossi Ginossar has just died. http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/382595.html Of cancer at age 58. Frankly I did not know he had cancer when I demanded he be indicted for espionage and money laundering for Arafat and the PLO. And frankly had I known he had cancer, I would have advocated he be indicted anyway. And before anyone tongue lashes me and calls me insensitive and other names, you might want to be aware of my own medical history, described in detail in my book The Scout, Gefen Publishing House. Let us just say I am one of those who have earned the hard way the right to denounce Ginossar even when he has cancer. Having noted this, let me also mention that we may now have an explanation for WHY Ginossar was not in fact indicted last year when the press was uncovering his dirt, a much more serious pile of filth by the way than anything being linked to SHaron. I suspect the Labor establishment intervened with the leftists who run the Prosecutors Office and the Attorney General and persuaded them to leave poor sick Yossi alone. The Kroc Center is supposed to be a research center at Notre Dame University. In the article below that appeared in the NY SUN, Kroc is accused by the NY paper of sponsoring an Islamic terrorist with ties to Al-Qaida. Joan B. Kroc was the leftist widow of the McDonald's fortune who left lots of money for left wing causes, such as National Public Radio. You might be aware that the Kroc Center has ALSO financed a paper by Neve Gordon, the lecturer at Ben Gurion University who has filed a SLAPP suit against me because I criticized his political opinions and poltical behavior. In the KROC-financed paper by Gordon, he tries to prove that Israel is a terrorist state. He proudly lists it as one of his major academic publications on his web page. It can be accessed at http://www3.nd.edu/~krocinst/ocpapers/ Occasional Paper #18:OP:1 [Abstract - HTML] [Full-text - PDF] Terrorism in Arab-Israeli Conflict Here is the NY Sun article declaring that the Kroc Center finances terrorism and anti-Semitism: Notre Dame's Anti-Semite By Eli Lake New York Sun | January 13, 2004 A Swiss scholar who has been accused in France of sowing anti-Semitism and is considered by some analysts to be an apologist for radical Islam will be coming to America this fall to teach at University of Notre Dame in Indiana. Tariq Ramadan has accepted a post as the Henry Luce Professor at Notre Dame's Joan B. Kroc Center for International Peace Studies. Mr. Ramadan in October published an article on an Islamic Web site, Oumma.com, singling out some of France's Jewish intellectuals for supporting the war in Iraq and thus,he said, placing the allegiances of their religion ahead of their obligation as scholars. In it he wrote that the analysis of French Jewish intellectuals was "increasingly oriented toward a community-based concern that tends to relativize the defense of universal principles like equality and justice." That essay earned him the swift rebuke of his targets including Bernard-Henri Levy, author of "Who Killed Daniel Pearl," and Bernard Kouchner, the former chief U.N. administrator for Kosovo, both of whom said the manner of his attack was racist and recommended his censure. Mr. Ramadan has also been praised in some circles in the West as a moderating voice in Islam. Time magazine, founded by Luce, called him one of their "innovators of the year" in 2000. In his last book, Mr. Ramadan said that the traditional distinction that un-Islamic lands should be taken by force was outmoded. And despite his recent critique of Jewish intellectuals, he has also preached against anti-Semitism in some of his speeches in Europe. "We find him invaluable because he takes the risk of talking to both worlds," the director of the Kroc Center, Scott Appleby, told The New York Sun yesterday. "If we are going to avoid a violent conflict with radical Muslims, we will do so by taking the risk of understanding their point of view, their criticisms of the West, and also having the authority to talk with them." Mr. Ramadan's credentials with the more radical strains of Islam have often led his critics to regard him as their apologist. "Basically he is a Muslim brotherhood preacher," Michel Gurfinkiel, the editor of Valeurs Actuelles, a French newsweekly, told the Sun yesterday."He is using two parallel rhetorics. One is for the global European opinion and looking very European and then there is his proper radical Muslim teachings." The grandson of the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hassan al-Banna, Mr. Ramadan has been accused in the French press of maintaining ties to Al Qaeda, a charge he has denied. On November 14, 2003, the French newspaper Le Parisien published an article quoting a former French intelligence officer and investigator for the families of the victims of the September 11 World Trade Center bombing, Jean Charles-Brisard, that Mr. Ramadan was suspected by European intelligence agencies of meeting Al Qaeda deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri in 1991. Mr. Appleby said the French and Swiss governments have exonerated Mr. Ramadan of these charges, and he added that the vetting process at Notre Dame for the position was a vigorous one. Mr. Ramadan has also denied these charges in the French press. But others in the American academy disagree. The director of the Middle East Forum, Daniel Pipes, who gave Mr. Ramadan's book "To be a European Muslim" a favorable review, said yesterday,"Once again we see that the leftward leaning academy and in particular the Kroc Institute has a soft spot for militant Islamic figures. Given what we are now learning about him, it would appear like others, he is playing a double game of hiding an Islamist agenda." The president of the Washington-based Ethics and Public Policy Center, Hillel Fradkin, said, "He has an undeserved reputation for being a moderate. It is clear from his recent remarks in France he is not looking for domestic comity, but domestic quarrels." Mr. Appleby said in response, "We are not surprised that he is accused of double talk because what he is trying to do is to bring two ways of knowing and two ways of talking into conversation with one another." 2. Oh, and Ami Isseroff, the Beilinized columnist who sometimes appears on Israel Insider, now admits that I never said that Jews were involved in any Kennedy assassination, but I have not been paid by him 10,000 dollars along with his retraction. Actually he is now claiming that it is perfectly natural and normal to believe that if someone thinks the Histadrut is evil, then they must also believe in Jewish cabals and conspiracies to do nefarious things, like assassinate a Kennedy, and so no one should take him to task for his pathetic fabrication. Will Isseroff now take on Brer Pasko for the following? http://israelnn.com/article.php3?id=3188 Unionized Hostage-Taking in Israel by Ariel Natan Pasko January 08, 2004 Did you ever imagine that terrorism could become unionized? Well in Israel, they've developed economic terrorism into a fine science. Israel's large trade union - the Histadrut - has just carried out the longest-running labor "slowdown" in Israeli history - 100 days. The union took the entire country hostage for over three months. Rather than strike, in which workers would lose income, they simply showed up to work, but did virtually nothing. That way, they still collected their salaries. When trying to get a phone number from directory assistance, people were told, "We are only giving out emergency numbers. Is this an emergency?" People haven't been able to renew passports, get birth and death certificates - the burial societies had only certain hours to bury the dead, people couldn't apply for unemployment benefits - and that during the highest unemployment period in Israel's history, nor for a host of other government services. They didn't care how much they hurt the average citizen, who couldn't do anything to help the workers anyway. Workers at the electric and water companies are already the highest paid salaried workers in Israel - about twice the national average and three times the salary of teachers - and they are publicly regulated utilities. Don't forget that the workers at Israel Electric Corp. also get free, unlimited electricity to boot. Now you know why electricity prices keep rising in Israel. But hey, they're unionized. Speaking of unions, the Histadrut had been threatening a general strike for several months, due to the Israeli government's economic reform plan. And what did the government want to do? For one, cut down the number of public sector employees. Israel's civil service is one of the most bloated in the Western world. Fully one-third of workers are government employees. Another "hot" issue was pension reform. Well, think about this, if they're "striking" about pensions and not salaries, then that means they're getting paid enough now... During the labor actions, Finance Minister Netanyahu proposed introducing legislation that would require any strike action be brought before the union membership for a vote before being initiated, as is standard in the US and elsewhere. Well, Histadrut head Amir Peretz, in typical demagogic fashion, went on television and screamed how Netanyahu was trying to break the union. It made a lot of news for a couple days. And then, on Israel television's "Politika" show, a Likud Knesset member read the Histadrut by-laws that clearly said that any strike action needs to be approved by the membership through a vote. Israel's trade union - for decades connected to the Labor Party - has never been observing its own rules. Industrial democracy in Israel is a farce. A small clique of oligarches have run the union from the start, making the decision to strike or not, to accept the terms of a new agreement or not, as if it was their private fiefdom, without the workers - i.e., members - permission. A general strike, by the way, would have caused major damage to Israel's economy. Israel for decades has had one of the highest number of annual strike days in the world. It's estimated that the threatened general strike could have cost the economy 2.5 billion shekels/day (that's about $550 million/day). This, during Israel's worst ever recession. Economist Professor Lester Thurow recently said about Israel, "It sounds ridiculous, but the last Bolsheviks left are here in Israel. In the rest of the world, except maybe for France, things like this just dont happen. In the US, you can go on strike, but only when a contract expires, not in the middle. Were the US airline workers to go on strike in mid-contract, causing me to miss an important meeting, I could sue them for damages. Of course, there are also other damages." Finance Minister Netanyahu is on track when he talks about legislation guaranteeing the democratization of the Histadrut. Imagine if Israel hadn't been shackled with strikes for decades, how much larger the economy would have grown. And Netanyahu's economic reform plan, which includes trimming social welfare benefits and the public sector in general, is surely needed. Data on how much the "slowdown" cost the economy is not yet in, but don't worry, "Mr. Joe Israeli" will pay the price, not the union. But whose counting? Certainly not the "Hostage Takers". Ami Isseroff's Pathetic Lie It is one thing to be misquoted, but quite another to be confused with Israel UFOlogist and conspiracist Barry Chamish. Yet, that appears to be the latest intellectual contribution to Middle East understanding by leftist columnist Ami Isseroff. Isseroff has distributed the email message pasted below to some people, in which he takes me to task for attacking the Histadrut as organized crime. I stand by everything I said about the Histadrut, and frankly would endorse administration detention (usually reserved for terrorists) of Histadrut leaders next time they order the shutting down of the airport. (Always happy to give Isseroff something new over which to get upset.) Well, he is entitled to his opinion about what I write about the Histadrut and even about moi, and, unlike certain leftists I know, I do not run to court every time someone calls me a name I do not like. Any time Comrade Ami wants to compare publication records with me before an impartial panel of judges, fire away! But it is one thing to call me a self-hating Jew, as he does below evidently because I oppose the program for a Second Holocaust advocated by Israeli Leftists including certain mediocre leftist columnists who appear on the Israel Insider web site, and it is quite another to attribute to me the conspiracist views of Barry Chamish. Isseroff has long served as an English-language cheerleader for Israel's Beilinized Left. He is a third-rate writer with little understanding of the Middle East conflict, a war he believes can be resolved through endless demonstrations of Israeli niceness and concessions and restraint and turning the other cheek. A technical writer by training, Isseroff has endorsed the Road Map (http://www.mideastweb.org/palandpeace.htm ), opposes Israel killing terrorist leaders ("Israeli assassinations and other moves were provocations that could be used as excuses for the suicide attacks."). He is Executive Secretary of MidEastWeb for Coexistence, one of those Potemkin structures with virtually no members funded by Guess Who - see http://www.mideastweb.org , a group supporting Beilin's "Initiative", and he is editor of PeaceWatch http://www.ariga.com/peacewatch, a group supporting Beilin and devoted to achieving consensus between Arabs devoted to Israeli annihilation and Jewish leftists similar so devoted. It links to Arthur Waskows bats-in-the-belfry Center. Isseroff, in his ravings pasted below, attributes to me the claim that the Jews assassinated Kennedy. Not only is Isseroff a pathetic liar, but I have long advocated the exact opposite position, namely, that all the conspiracy theories about the Kennedy assassination are bunk, that the Warren Commission report is correct, and I have spent many a posting debunking the conspiracists, including Chamish. The theory in question is Barry Chamish's, and I have denounced Chamish for proliferating it. So much for Isseroff's credentials as a researcher and journalist. We await Isseroff's publication of an apology and retraction. Better yet, if Isseroff can find a single site or source in which I claim Jews murdered Kennedy, I will grant him 10,000 dollars, and if he cannot, I would like to ask that he send me a check for similar amount. Let us see if Isseroff has any honor and scruples! Mother Jones is a Trashy Magazine of the most-radical and least-rational leftists in the United States. Published in SanFrancisco, it is ordinarily not even a fit thing in which to wrap fish. HOWEVER, it seems that Mother Jones Magazine came out AGAINST Rachel Corrie, the ISM pro-terrorist radical who challenged an Israeli army bulldozer to a game of "chicken" and won the game. Take alook at http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2003/09/ma_497_01.html. Among other comments, Mother Jones wrote: "She was ridiculed as "roadkill" on one website and excoriated on others for burning a makeshift American flag before Gaza schoolchildren, a photo of which prompted anti-war protesters and other likely allies to distance themselves from her. A university newspaper ran a scathing cartoon depicting a woman standing in front of a bulldozer along with dictionary definitions of the word "stupidity" and one addition: "3. Sitting in front of a bulldozer to protect a gang of terrorists." Most Americans, if they thought about her at all, considered Corrie a naif who had chosen the wrong side and paid, tragically, with her life." The magazine also called her a deluded idiot. Gosh, things are really creepy when Mother Jones Magazine starts to make sense! The Terrorist Lobby was so upset they organized a mass protest directed against poor Momma Jones (http://www.palsolidarity.org/pressreleases/PR_16Sep03_12_08_24BethlehemISMMediaOffice.htm) Subject: Israel's Ribbentrop-Molotov Left The Israeli Left??s Molotov-Ribbentrop Turnabout By Steven Plaut Growing up, I always found one of the most bizarre things in history to be the dramatic Turnabout of the communist movement the day that Germany invaded Stalinist Russia. Just to remind you of what happened, the communist movement, its fellow travelers, and other Far Leftists were ferociously anti-fascist in the mid-1930s, but were decided pro-Hitler from the time of the Nazi-Soviet Pact of August 23, 1939. Germany had already gobbled up Czechoslovakia within the framework of the Munich Agreement, an early precursor of Yossi Beilin??s Geneva Accord. Even before the Pact, Stalin had been carefully nursing a neutrality position regarding Nazi Germany, hoping to deflect the German war machine onto the capitalist West. Stalin repeated his friendship for Germany at the usual Party meetings and congresses, and the Comintern issued instructions for how good leftists must think. Comintern was the international propaganda poodle of Stalin, and after the Pact toed his line on the need for ??non-aggression?? with regard to Germany. Stalin repeated his hope for good neighborly relations with Hitler.. Hitler was in a hurry. After taking Memel from Lithuania, he was planning to conquer Poland before the end of the summer of 1939, while the weather was still good. Stalin replaced his foreign minister Litvinov with Molotov and began a series of secret negotiations with Hitler, somewhat similar to those early Oslo talks held illegally by Israel??s far Left lemmings with the PLO in Oslo. Hints that things were developing could be first found in an article by Zhdanov in Pravda on June 29, attacking Britain and France. Hitler needed Russia neutralized to complete the invasion of Poland. On August 3, 1939, Hitler agreed to Stalin??s terms for sitting by while Poland was destroyed. Germany never even bothered to inform its ally, Italy, of its plans. On the night of August 19 the Nazi-Soviet trade treaty was signed. When he received Stalin's assent, Hitler pounded on the wall with his fists and shouted, "I have the world in my pocket!" On the night of August 23, 1939, th e non-secret text of pact was officially released. The Communist parties abroad, which had no official warning of the Soviet switch-around, reacted at first with confusion. On September 6 Thorez and other French Communists joined the calls for aid to Poland, only to desert at Moscow's behest a few days later. Harry Pollitt, the British Communist leader, wrote a pamphlet entitled "How to Win the War," and after two weeks both he and his pamphlet had to drop from public gaze. The German Communists in exile made strange noises suggesting that the Allies were worse than Hitler. The general line was that already stated by Stalin in March, that the war was an ''imperialist'' one for the division of the world. The Communists said much more about Allied than about Nazi ''culpability,'' and demanded ''peace.'' Stalin collaborated openly with Hitler in dividing up Eastern Europe, with the uniform approval and applause of the world communist parties and the ??progressive?? Left. After the invasion of France by Germany, Stalin ordered military occupation of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, and all three were ''admitted'' into the Soviet Union as constituent republics in July. In late June the Soviets also annexed Bessarabia and northern Bukovina. All this was done by way of an ultimatum to Rumania. The Russians then used most of the annexed territory to create a new Moldavian SSR. Ah, but Stalin??s Russia quickly became a victim of its betrayal of civilization. Hitler was not simply going to war against the capitalist West, but had been planning all along to destroy the Soviet Union and annex its lands. In July 1940 Hitler had secretly decided to prepare to attack the Soviet Union. In September a German-Italian-Japanese Tripartite Pact was signed, and although it stipulated that it would not affect the relations of any of the three powers with the Soviets, a deterioration in Berlin-Moscow amity had become apparent. As if speaking in the voice of a single man, which of course it was, the communist parties of the world and their leftist fellow travelers became the most militant warmongers on earth. Appealing to pretended patriotism, they demanded that the Western countries attack German and its evil allies. Just days earlier they had been praising Germany for its campaign against Western capitalism, endorsing isolationism, calling for neutrality and non-aggression, demanding that proletarians from all nations cooperate, regardless of whether their governments were at war, and even praising some of the ??progressive?? elements of Nazism, such as its nationalization of some of the means of production. And days later the vary same people were marching against Germany, labeling it the epitome of evil, demanding support and solidarity with the Soviet victim of German aggression, supporting rearmament by the same Western nations it had been denouncing as imperialists in the previous breath. As I say, I always had a great deal of difficulty imagining and understanding how people could display such totalitarian self-abasement, such slavish obedience to such naked hypocrisy, as did that generation of the Left. That is, until I observed the Turnabout of the Israeli Left regarding the Security Fence. Let us note that the idea of building a Security Fence, composed of segments of walls, fences, and electronic gimmicks, was long the official banner of Israel??s Oslo Left. The Left wanted the Wall built for several reasons. Mainly they believed that such a Wall would create de facto separation of Israel from the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and behind the Wall the Palestinians could exercise sovereignty or semi-sovereignty as a major step towards statehood. In addition, the Left presumed that once Israel had erected the barrier, all Jewish settlers on its wrong side of it would be forced to leave, handing Arafat an ethnically-cleansed (of Jews) set of lands. The Left presumed that once the fence was up, they would be able to block Israeli military incursions into what they regarded as ??Palestinian lands??. Finally, the Left probably hoped that reductions in Palestinian atrocities as a result of the Wall would boost support for the Left in Israel and its agenda of appe asement. For years, the banner slogan of the Oslo Left in Israel was ??Us over Here and Them over There??. The Wall they proposed to erect in the West Bank would reduce terrorist infiltrations, much as did the existing fence around most of the Gaza Strip and the existing security fence along the Lebanese border. All we need is some electronic Gee-Whiz gadgets, and terrorism from our Oslo peace partners will end, the Left assured the nation. And once the carnage dropped, it would be possible once again for the Radical Left to stampede the country into following the Left??s plans, or so it hoped. The Wall was the Left??s Master Strategy, a program to impose withdrawal by Israel from most of the West Bank under the guise of protecting Israeli civilians from terrorist barbarism. It was at first the Right who criticized the Wall. The main criticism was that it would not effectively end the terror. The PLO was already firing mortars and rockets over the Gaza Wall into Jewish civilian homes. What would stop it from doing so with new walls? And what exactly did the Left think the Palestinians would be doing behind it, once Israel abandoned the territory behind the Wall? Pursue quilting? The only way to suppress the carnage would be to maintain full Israeli military control of the West Bank and Gaza, no matter how shrilly the rest of the world complained, bellyached, and moaned. The Right also feared the idea that the Wall would be construed as a stage in Israeli complete withdrawal and abandonment of the West Bank to PLO control, which was precisely the same reason the Left WANTED the Wall. The Uberleftist and super-dove Ehud Barak had been one of the original promoters of a security fence for the West Bank as the solution to problems of Middle East violence (for example, PR Newswire, April 27, 2002). Numerous leftist politicians from the Labor Party, especially Haim Ramon who saw himself as a contender for party chief, endorsed the idea. Amram Mitzna, from the Labor Party??s Shi??ite Far Left, won the nomination and endorsed a Security Wall and unilateral withdrawal by Israel from the West Bank and Gaza. He was clobbered in the election by Ariel Sharon in a landslide. Numerous members from Meretz, a party even further to the Left and containing Marxist components, also chimed in to support the Wall. The Left??s endorsement of a Security Wall for Israel, fencing out most of the Palestinians, was so enthusiastic and near-universal that there was only one possible development that could have turned the Left against the idea ?? namely, its adoption by Ariel Sharon and the Likud. While at first highly skeptical of the practicality of the Wall and its ability to keep the Palestinian savages from murdering Israelis, Sharon and his people were under enormous pressure to do SOMETHING as the terrorist violence escalated. Sharon became convinced that it was worth giving the Wall a try. Better partial prevention of terrorist infiltration than none at all, they believed. The targeted assassinations by Israel of Palestinian terrorist leaders escalated at the same time, resulting in reduced incidence of terrorist attacks in Israel and creating the impression that the partially-completed Wall was somehow responsible. Shimon Peres was the lone vote against the security fence when the Sharon cabinet approved it officially in June 2002. He did not oppose it in principle, but disliked the specific lines for it. Peres and the Left wanted the fence to trace the old pre-1967 ??Green Line??, signaling that Israel planned to turn over the entire area in full to the PLO. The rest of the Israeli Left then carried out a 180 degree reversal of direction of the sort that has not been seen since the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact collapsed under the German invasion of Russia. Within weeks, the entire Israeli Left, which had been united for years in favor of the Wall as their consensus position, ??Us over Here and Them over There??, was suddenly as equally united and displaying totalitarian uniformity in OPPOSITION to the Wall. Some even compared it to the walls around the Warsaw Ghetto, denouncing it as a racist way to ??victimize?? the po?? Palestinians. The Left labeled it an ??Apartheid Wall??. You see, the PLO did not like the Wall. It made it harder for terrorists from the PLO and its affiliates to enter Israeli cities murder Israeli civilians. And it encompassed somewhat less than the entire 100% of the West Bank the PLO hoped to control as its launching base for destroying the rump Israel, roughly the same way the rump Czechoslovakia was destroyed after being stripped of the Sudetenland. The Israeli Left today takes its cues from the PLO the same way that the communists in the late 1930s and 1940s took their cues from the Comintern. No sooner had Sharon and the Likud begun construction of the Security Wall than the Israeli Left and its amen choruses from around the world started a coordinated totalitarian campaign AGAINST it! In recent days, the pro-terror Western radical anti-Semites from the International Solidarity Movement (ISM actually stands for I SUPPORT MURDERERS) joined Israeli Leftists and Palestinian fascists in joint physical attacks on the Fence, trying to vandalize it and cut it with wirecutters. Just a few months after it was the preferred recipe for peace endorsed by nearly the entire Israeli Left, the Wall is today a colonial aggression, denounced by all progressive leftists and people for peace, people so opposed to it that they are willing to risk prison, tear gas, and getting shot in the legs top tear it down and rip holes in it. Israel must be prevented from erecting obstacles to mass murderers and must be prevented from protecting its children at all costs. And Uncle Joe Stalin would be SO proud of them!! 2, The ISM and the Arabs: http://frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=11652 The ISM's Jihad Against Arabs By Steven Plaut FrontPageMagazine.com | January 8, 2004 You can tell the Middle East is getting really confusing when the vile pro-terror extremist organization ISM, or International Solidarity Movement, decides to go on jihad warpath against a Bedouin Arab patriot. Pressing Israel to investigate the shooting of ISM protester Tom Hurndall, Israel found that the soldier who shot Hurndall -- was a Bedouin Arab serving in the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). Rather than shame Israel by exposing a bloodthirsty Israeli militarist, they instead harmed an Arab, a member of the group they allegedly support. The ISM is the group of leftists and anarchists who have adopted the Palestinian terrorists as their pet cause. These are the sorts of people usually found posting their scribblings on Indymedia websites. They have flocked to the West Bank and Gaza Strip, where they devote themselves to trying to prevent Israel from taking military action against the terrorists who send suicide bombers and other mass murderers into Israel. The ISM peace activists try to block roads, set up obstacles before tanks, oppose soldiers trying to arrest terrorists or to knock down houses of suicide bombers, and otherwise show how thoroughly they support the Palestinian "militants." In at least one case, they hid arms for Palestinian terrorists and have attempted to hide wanted terrorists in their offices. They make no secret of their desire to see Israel annihilated. They openly endorse mass murder of Jews. The two terrorists who carried out an atrocity in a Tel Aviv pub were hosted by the ISM the day before they carried out the murders. However, the very fact that ISM operates in Israel attests to the antithesis of ISM's conclusions: They are in Israel precisely because Israeli troops tend to regard trouble-makers from the U.S. and Europe with gentleness and timidity. Ever wonder why these people were not in Iraq, guarding Ba'ath offices and bunkers? Ever wonder what would have become of a group of ISM-ers who stood in front of the Tikrit farmhouse to prevent the GIs from extracting Saddam from his flea-infested hole? Lately, the ISM comrades have taken on a new tactic: attacking segments of the security fence Israel is erecting, a fence designed to make it harder for the Palestinian terrorists to enter Israel and murder civilians. About 1,300 Israelis have been murdered by the PLO and its affiliates since the time when Arafat signed the Oslo Accords and renounced violence for all eternity. Not only Israelis have been the victims of the carnage; Israels Maariv (in its January 2, 2004, issue) reports that Arafat himself has now been implicated in the murder of the American diplomats a few weeks back in Gaza. The ISM-ers who attack the fence wish to vandalize it, so that it will be easier for the murderers to enter Israel. When they attack the fence, they come prepared with gas masks and facial ointments to protect them from tear gas, because they are clearly planning to behave violently. A few have been injured by Israeli troops exercising crowd control. None have been killed. The Israeli troops have exhibited a high degree of restraint in the face of the violent provocateurs without comparison in the democratic world. I bet you that if a crowd of hooligans attacked the fence surrounding Barbara Streisands mansion in Beverly Hills and tried to vandalize it, the guards and police would mow them down with no hesitation; when they try to allow suicide bombers into a sovereign nation, the media extend their sympathy. While several ISM hooligans have been banged up while being brought under control by the Israelis, none have as yet achieved the same status of Stalinist martyrdom as the two best-known ISM terror supporters. Over the past year, two ISM members became Patron Saints for Terrorism. The better known is Rachel Corrie, a rather na??ve, American-flag-burning, anti-Israel, college student from Washington state. While trying to prevent Israeli heavy machinery from knocking down terrorists' houses and digging up tunnels used by the Palestinians to smuggle explosives into Israel, she placed herself in a position where the bulldozer driver could not see her. She was dragged down, crushed, and died. The other near-martyr of the ISM is less known in the U.S. but is being beatified as we speak in the UK. He is Tom Hurndall. Israeli soldiers were on a mission last April in the Gaza border town of Rafiah, from which all the tunnels used to smuggle arms and explosives enter from Egypt, when they came under PLO fire. Hurndall was there, like all ISM provocateurs, to interfere with Israel's military operations against the terrorists. Given ISM behavior in the past, it is at least as conceivable that he was planning to serve as a human shield for the terrorists doing the shooting. He was hit in the head and has been in a coma ever since. Hurndall's family and the ISM have gone on a crusade against Israel, claiming son Tom was intentionally shot down in cold blood. The same people have long claimed that Rachel Corrie was injured deliberately out of Israeli malice, rather than as a result of her own recklessness. These folks have never come up with a good reason for why Hurndall was running around in the middle of a firefight in the Gaza Strip in the first place, a firefight started by the very same Palestinian terrorists he came there to support and protect. But things have gotten "curiouser and curiouser." The Israel-bashing Left has been organizing pressure, including among U.S. and EU politicians, to lobby for the prosecution of any Israeli troops involved in the injuries of these far-Left activists. Now just imagine their frustration! The raison detre of the ISM is to protect those who wage attacks on Jews and delegitimize Zionism, but the main victim of their agitprop turns out to be a Bedouin Arab. Yes, it turns out that Hurndall was in fact shot by a Bedouin Arab soldier serving in the Israeli Defense Forces. Of course, you would never know that from reading the various reports in the British press. It turns out that the Israelis who came under fire by the Palestinian terrorists in the incident in which Hurndall was shot were Bedouin Arabs. They returned fire. Hurndall was hit. The original IDF Southern Command inquiry did not identify soldiers responsible for the shooting. Then, facing pressure exerted by Hurndall's family and others, IDF Judge Advocate General Menahem Finkelstein agreed two months ago to open a new inquiry into the shooting. IDF military police investigated a soldier from the desert patrol (Bedouin) battalion. The soldier confirmed that he fired during the incident from behind a concrete barrier. He claimed that he shot in response to heavy Palestinian gunfire, and that he aimed at a Palestinian who had a pistol and wore a uniform. Many people are not even aware that Arabs and Moslems serve in the Israeli military. In most cases, they are not conscripted, although members of the Druze and Circassian minority groups are. Both those last two are Arabic-speaking minority groups; the Circassians are Moslems and Druze have their own religion. Other Arabs may volunteer to serve their country in the Israeli Defense Forces, border patrol, and police. In particular a large number of Bedouins serve in these units, sometimes as scouts. (See my book about Bedouin scouts, The Scout, from Gefen Publishing House). Israel seems to have caved in under the international pressure and is going to prosecute the Bedouin soldier involved in the shooting. Hurndall is now apparently brain dead due to his injury. Some wags have suggested that ISM people are brain dead even without getting injured. How embarrassing for the ISM! They came to demonize the Jews and protect the terrorists. But all they have succeeded in doing is forcing Israel to prosecute a patriotic Bedouin Arab serving his country in the military. Perhaps they will now go after Iraqi Arabs who opposed Saddam? At Last! Ben Gurion University lecturer Neve Gordon with Arafat, as photo appeared on YNET news service site, taken while Gordon was illegally in Ramallah with the "human shields" trying to prevent the IS+DF from capturing the murderers of an Israeli Cabinet Minister and other terrorists during Operation Defense Wall, launched after the Netanya Passover Massacre. 1. Anyone know where we can get a codpiece with a PLO flag on it? Berkeley Lesbian Feminazi Comes to Town to Endorse Terror: http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/379793.html To be or not to be Jewish, lesbian, feminist By Orna Coussin (Haaretz - Coussin covers Feminazi news for the paper) Prof. Judith Butler, professor of Comparative Literature and Rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley, is visiting Israel this week. Butler is an unusual figure in academia. On the one hand, she is a celebrity who has a community of followers and who exudes charisma. Groups of followers sometimes line up for her lectures, as though she were a rock star; and her major influence on feminism at the start of the 21st century is widely noted. On the other hand, many persons outside of feminist academia have never heard of her; nor have they come across her ideas, or been influenced by them. Also, some detractors criticize her prose style, complaining that it is heavily laden with post-modernist jargon. In fact, in 1998, the academic journal Philosophy and Literature awarded her first place in its World's Worst Writing competition, an amusing critique of inaccessible academic prose. It can't really be said that Butler has altered her writing style since then. Just as Butler, 47, has earned deep-rooted admiration and respect, she has also stirred opposition, both from the conservative ranks in American academia, and also in some feminist circles. Conservatives fret about the influence she exerts on students, with respect to issues of lesbian rights and feminism; concurrently, Butler has been engaged in serious ideological battles with notable American feminists such as Catharine Mackinnon and Martha Nussbaum. Zionism and gender During a discussion on Sunday at a Jerusalem hotel, just a few steps away from the walls of the Old City, Butler radiated charismatic energy. It was clear that she is accustomed to confronting the mainstream - that might be the source of her vitality. A political position which has motivated her of late, she says, is that of a Jewish woman who opposes Israel's conquest in the territories. Though she will speak tomorrow in Tel Aviv on gender, the field in which she has made her mark, what has brought her to Israel is her criticism of Zionism. "I grew up in a very Zionist family, in Cleveland," she recalls. "My mother, Lois, was active in the American Jewish Committee. I always respected her activity, but I always understood that there is a reality for Israelis, and more so for Palestinians, that has not been addressed. Layers of reality in which Israelis and Palestinians live have never been addressed in synagogues of the Reform movement, within which I was educated. They didn't speak about violence and oppression and humiliation. I developed my own criticism of Israel, and also at the same time a strong Jewish identity." In Berkeley, California, Butler says, she found "a progressive Jewish community which has enabled me to study Jewish philosophy in depth, and also deal with politics of social justice." She says that she attends synagogue services regularly ("I understand that many leftists in Israel don't get anywhere near religious institutions; with me, it goes together well"); and she sends her nine year old son to Hebrew school. Supporting her critique of Zionism, Butler turns to Jewish philosophers and figures such as Martin Buber, Emmanuel Levinas and Judah Magnes. "There was Jewish thinking, even within Zionism, that suggested an alternative to basing the state on religion," she says. "I hadn't known that." Also important in her thinking was the discovery that "there are Jewish philosophers who uphold that as Jews, the ethical activity that is most important for us is relating to the other." The lecture which Butler gave yesterday in Jerusalem's Notre Dame Hotel, at a conference sponsored by the Faculty for Israeli-Palestinian Peace (FIPP), was a continuation of an argument waged last year in American and British newspapers between Butler and Harvard University President Lawrence Summers regarding forms of activity against Israel sponsored by leftist academics in America. Summers criticized academics such as Butler who signed petitions and organized symposia and demonstrations against Israel. Among other charges, the Harvard University president maintained that these critics are "serious, thinking people who are promoting activities that are anti-Semitic in their effect, if not their intent." Butler responded in length (in a piece published by The London Review of Books), and challenged what she regarded as Summers' basic assumptions. She argued that Summers' attempt to defend Israel against all criticism is founded upon an anti-Semitic proposition similar to that which compels academic institutions in the U.S. and Europe to boycott Israelis and Jews. That is, the claim that Israel cannot be criticized since such criticism is informed by anti-Semitism is based upon the anti-Semitic propositions that Jews are one cluster, that they can only be victims, and that Israel and Jews are one and the same thing. Butler maintained that criticism and the pursuit of a just, democratic society are Jewish values; and so her criticism of Israel is not tainted by anti-Semitism. "It would become the responsibility of all of us to change the conditions of reception so that the public might begin to distinguish between criticism of Israel, and a hatred of Jews," she argues. Understanding the other Butler will speak tomorrow at 18:00 at Tel Aviv University's Bar-Shira Auditorium on her field of expertise, and fame - gender. She will speak to a large group of curious listeners and also admirers - most will be admirers, mainly feminists, many of whom (it can be assumed) will be lesbians. She will speak as a woman, lesbian and feminist who levels criticism of these very categories - woman, lesbian, feminist. Butler explains her politics of disclaiming: "First of all," she says, "I do claim to be a lesbian and a Jew." Before she disclaims such categories, she explains, "I identify, as a lesbian and as a Jewish woman. I have other identities too. I am a strange philosopher, a short person, and [I am] aging," she says, smiling. "That is, I definitely claim that I am a lesbian and a Jew, but it would be wrong to claim that to be lesbian and Jewish is all that I am. It would also be wrong to assume that my lesbian [identity] or Jewishness describes my worldview. I don't think that lesbian sexuality is specific and completely different than heterosexual sexuality. One cannot say that there is no overlap between homosexual and heterosexual sexuality. There are straight practices used by homosexuals." As Butler sees it, identity is not a clearly defined and coherent entity. She challenges listeners to stop and ask themselves what it means to be "Jewish," to be a "woman," or to "come out of the closet." "I'm not interested in drawing boundaries around myself," B utler explained this week. "I'm against separatism of any kind." That sentiment is at the core of Butler's vision of feminism, and it is also the source of her dissent from the traditionalist core of American feminists. At the start of her most popular book, Gender Trouble (1990), Butler asks, "Who is the subject of feminism?" Does feminism operate on behalf of all women, or in the name of femininity? If feminism represents women and female values, what exactly are those values? Perhaps the defining of such values, and of womanliness, is precisely what perpetuates the balance of power between the sexes in society; and so does feminism harm itself when it perpetuates the category of "women"? Butler deepens the distinction between sex and gender that is accepted in feminist theory. Being a man and being a woman, it is now universally accepted, are cultural constructs. "Gender is a kind of imitation for which there is no original," Butler adds. "Masculinity" and "femininity" are constructed out of imitation and performance, she argues. There is no genuine prototype of a "man" and a "woman" - imitation and performance, not the categories they evoke, are the essence. Even the fact that women, unlike men, can give birth (typically, Butler's detractors appeal to this biological fact in an attempt to reject her theory) is not an absolute fact which necessitates the fashioning of the female gender, Butler claims. There are women who cannot give birth, and there are women who do not want to give birth; and there is no reason for supposing that the possibility of giving birth produces a particular type of "woman" category. After reading Butler, and French feminist thinkers who inform her thinking (including Monique Wittig and Luce Irigaray), it is difficult to continue thinking of sexual and gender identity along traditional lines. There is something very liberating about these ideas; and they exercise a special appeal to people who do not conform readily to conventional categories of masculinity and femininity. Butler says that she is unsure of the extent to which she has been influential outside of academic circles. "Sometimes I receive letters from people who say that I have helped them. It always pleases me to see that someone has been influenced by my work." Asked whether she thinks that her work has made readers feel more comfortable with their sexuality, Butler says: "Feeling comfortable - that's an interesting idea but not one that I am familiar with in my life. They say it's a nice thing, to feel comfortable, but I don't know about it....I hope that my writing contributes to maximixing livability. I am worried by the suicides of young homosexuals and transgenders, by young men and women who fear that their sexuality has no place. I would want to be part of a world in which realizing your passion is not only possible but also an integral part of a flourishing life." Asked about critics who charge that her writing is inaccessible, and therefore fails to influence a wide audience, Butler responds: "With regard to the accessibility of my writing, there is a paradox: they say that it's impossible to read me, but my writings have been translated into 14 languages, and hundreds of thousands of copies of my books have been sold. That is, they are, for academic works, very popular. Beyond that, I speak in different ways to different audiences; I wrote some articles in popular newspapers after September 11, and about the war in Iraq. It's only my academic writing about gender that is less accessible." Butler adds: "When it comes to gender, I ask people to think anew about what it means, and about what their gender is. Ordinarily, people think that `femininity' and `masculinity' are an inner reality, or an expression of some natural inner reality. They speak about it in an idiom and in concepts that appear self-evident. For this reason, I cannot speak in my everyday language. I want to problematize regular language." For some critics, this goal is precisely the problem with Butler's politics. Her dissent from categories of identity is so unqualified, they charge, that she ignores real, flesh and blood men and women, the balance of power between them and their needs. For her part, Butler claims that mainstream American feminism - as led by figures such as Catharine Mackinnon - suffers from a tendency to view women as victims, to ignore cultural differences, and to over-emphasize pornography. This vision of feminism should be contested from within the feminist movement, she says; and an alternative must be provided. Her detractors say that Butler's feminism is abstract and theoretical, and encourages the movement to ignore the material aspects of the feminist struggle - economics, political power, and violence. 2. Neve Gordon Shows how Patriotic he is: Take a look at http://www.israel-state-terrorism.org/Israelitorture2.html and http://www.israel-state-terrorism.org/ 1. Oops, sorry. I tried to resend the photo of Neve Gordon clasping hands in solidarity with Yassir Arafat in the Ramallah headquarters, taken after after Gordon had entered it illegally after the Netanya Passover Massacre and while Arafat was hiding in the building the murderers of an Israeli Cabinet Minister and several other terrorists, but I guess the photo did not go thru again. I will try to find a better way to send it. Meanwhile, the full article in Hebrew with the photo is at http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-1612028,FF.html As noted earlier, SLAPP stands for Strategic Lawsuit against Public Participation. SLAPP suits are anti-democratic frivolous "libel suits" intended to suppress the free speech of people whose opinions one does not like. As you know, Neve Gordon, a Far Leftist lecturer at Ben Gurion University, has filed just such a harassment suit against me to stop me from criticizing his political opinions. Now would you like to know what actually DOES constitute libel? Take a look at the following article by the very same Gordon. Bear in mind that his army commander is a private person and - unlike Gordon - is NOT a public person! (Gordon is a public person, similar to a politician, because he writes his own columns and leads political organizations, and as a public figure cannot claim that criticizing his political behavior constitutes libel.) Counterpunch is the anti-Semitic magazine published by Alexander Cockburn, accused of being an Anti-Semite by New Republic, and a man who gave credence to "reports" that the Jews knocked down the WTC and spread anthrax in the US. The following was reprinted by Gordon in several languages all over the world: http://www.counterpunch.org/nevegordon1.html April 8, 2002 A Letter to the IDF's Paratrooper Commander Colonel Aviv Kohavi, How Did You Become a War Criminal? By Dr. Neve Gordon To Colonel Aviv Kohavi Brigade Commander of the Israeli Defense Forces Paratroopers I presume you remember me. In any event, I remember you. We first met in the paratrooper brigade. I was a platoon sergeant in the corporals company; you were a young platoon officer. Even then friends of mine who were serving with you in the same post in Lebanon related that you were a sensible, serious, and above all decent officer. The better part of our acquaintance occurred, though, at Hebrew University. We were studying towards our B.A. in Philosophy--you in preparation for a career in the military, I as a human rights activist. During that period we had more than one political discussion. I couldn't help but admire you. I found you to be a thinking person, imaginative, and judicious--quite different from the typical army officer that one meets at the university, one who registers merely to snatch a degree and to run off. Looking back, I believe that you really enjoyed your studies, a number of which, it should be noted, dealt with ethical theory. Years have passed since we last met. You became the paratroopers' brigade commander, I a lecturer in the department of politics and government at Ben Gurion University. On Thursday, March 1, 2002 I once again saw you, not face to face, but on television. You were on the news program: the commander of the troops that entered Balata refugee camp, near Nablus. You solemnly explained that at that very moment your soldiers were transmitting a forceful message to the Palestinian terrorists: the Israeli army will hunt them down in every nook and cranny. In the days after the interview, news began to trickle about what took place in the camp: prior to the incursion the Israeli military reigned terror on the inhabitants employing helicopters and tanks; then, Aviv, you imposed a curfew on the camp, blew up the electric transmission lines, cutting off electricity to 20,000 civilian inhabitants; bulldozers ruined the water supply pipe lines. Your soldiers, Aviv, then moved from house to house by smashing holes in the interior walls; they destroyed furniture and other property, and riddled bullets in water tanks on roof tops. The soldiers spread terror on the inhabitants, most of whom were women, elderly, and children. But that wasn't all. I learned that your soldiers also used inhabitants as human shields. Also, in the first few hours of the incursion the Palestinians had 120 wounded, and that you, Aviv, refused to allow ambulances to enter and leave the camp. There were, of course, several battles in the camp during the incursion; two Palestinians and one of your soldiers were killed. You also reported that you confiscated weapons and that your operation prevented future terrorist acts from happening. But you totally ignored the connection between Israeli military violence perpetrated in the Occupied Territories and Palestinian violence in Israel, as if the incursions into the camps and the reign of terror that you and your soldiers imposed do not drive Israel/Palestine into a blood bath from which none can escape. How, Aviv, do you think that your incursion affected the children whom you locked up for hours with other members of their families, while you searched their house and blasted holes through their walls? Did your incursion contribute a smithereen to peace, or did it instead spread seeds of hatred, despondence, and death in the crowded, poverty stricken, hopeless refugee camp? I have not stopped thinking about you since that television interview, trying to understand what was going on in your mind. What caused you to lead your soldiers --soldiers of the paratrooper brigade -- to a war against a civilian population? Aviv, I am presently teaching a course entitled "The Politics of Human Rights." One of the topics I discuss during the semester is the intifada and its lessons with respect to human rights. From the standpoint of international conventions, at least, your acts in Balata constitute blatant violations of human rights. Such acts are, in fact, war crimes. Aviv, what happened to the sensible and judicious officer? How did you become a war criminal? Dr. Neve Gordon Department of Political Science Ben-Gurion University Beer Sheva, Israel 2. Statement by Americans for a Safe Israel: http://www.afsi.org/OUTPOST/2004JAN/jan2.htm Israel's David Irving Trial Frequent Outpost contributor Steven Plaut is currently the defendant in Israel's own David Irving trial. Irving, it will be remembered, sued Prof. Deborah Lipstadt and her publisher, in England, for writing what the court would find were simply statements of fact: namely that Irving was a Nazi apologist and Holocaust denier who had manipulated documents to "prove" there had been no genocide of Jews during World War II. Prof. Plaut is being sued for libel, in Israel, by one Prof. Neve Gordon, who teaches political science (to that institution's disgrace) at Ben-Gurion University, and whose writings are cited on Irving's website as they are on a number of neo-Nazi, Arab and Holocaust denial websites. While Gordon argues that he did not put his articles on these sites, the fact that his writings appeal to those who did tells volumes about their content. Plaut points out that Gordon -- although not an M.D. -- used to head Physicians for Human Rights, a pro-Arab organization so extreme it was publicly denounced by the Israel Medical Association. Gordon, Plaut has revealed, has repeatedly called Israel a "fascist" state engaging in "state terrorism," and has not only described Sharon and Netanyahu as "war criminals" but also arch-dove former Labor Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Gordon was also one of the signers of a petition before the recent Iraq war which declared Israel was planning to maltreat the Arab population once the war broke out. Plaut has told how after the Passover massacre of 2002 in Netanya, Gordon was among the group who illegally infiltrated army lines and entered Arafat's Ramallah headquarters to prevent the arrest of terrorists holed up there. Gordon has praised the writings of the notorious Norman Finkelstein, whose output is so egregious that, Plaut notes, he is the neo-Nazis' pet "Jewish historian." There is much, much more in Gordon's hate-filled resume. However, while Gordon feels entitled to freely express the most extreme, fanatic sentiments, he does not believe Plaut is entitled to express his own views on them, and is using the courts in an attempt to silence criticism. Gordon's suit in the Israeli courts is no more likely to succeed than Irving's appeal to the British courts, but it has major nuisance value, putting Plaut to the ex- pense and travail of a trial. Meanwhile, readers are encouraged to write to Professor Avishai Braverman, President of Ben-Gurion University and/or Friends of Ben-Gurion University, 1430 Broadway, N.Y., N.Y. 10018 and say what they think of Gordon and his lawsuit. **** Photograph of Neve Gordon clasping hands with Arafat after he and the human shields entered Ramallah illegally in the middle of Operationm Defensive Wall (after the Netanya Passover Massacre), and while Arafat was hiding the murderers of an Israeli cabinet minister and other terrorists in his headquarters: http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-1612028,FF.html 1. Israel's Fundamentalist Left has a new cause, the human rights of monkeys. It seems that Israel is a third largest exporter in the world of lab monkeys, used in medical labs for such frivolous things as finding cures for cancer and Alzheimer's. The Israeli Left however is upset that the self-esteem of these critters might be injured if they are used to save human lives. So several groups have filed a petition against the exporters with the Supreme Court, to stop the sales. The Supreme Court issued a writ temporarily stopping the exports. This is the same Supreme Court that has often displayed far greater concern for the civil rights of Palestinian murderers than for the rights of their Jewish victims. The Left is terribly upset that live critters might be used for cruel experiments. But this is the same Left that decided to coerce the Jews of Israel into serving as lab animals in a cruel experiment named "Oslo", an experiment by the way that proved how failed are the ideas of the Left. 1300 of the Left's lab primate animals have been murdered. 2. A Rare Victory for Free Speech in Israel 09:36 Jan-05-04 / 11 Tevet 5764 Court Rules "Rabin Legacy" is not Holy (IsraelNN.com) The Jerusalem District Court on Sunday ordered the Ministry of Education to make compensatory payment to a teacher who opposed teaching the "Rabin Legacy" in our public schools. A few days before the fifth anniversary of the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Yisrael Shiran, a teacher in the Moria-Barkai School in Haifa circulated a petition among fellow teachers. He intended to give the petition to the Ministry of Education in which he opposed teaching the so-called "Rabin Legacy" in our schools. Shiran pointed out the legacy was one that distributed weapons to our enemies, terrorists, and teaches us to surrender that which is dear to us. Then director-general of the Education Ministry, Shulamit Amihai, was quick to suspend Shiran, enjoying the approval of acting Education Minister, then Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Shortly following the suspension, ministry officials realized their actions were illegal and he was reinstated but he was eventually forced to leave the school due to related arguments with administrative officials. Justice David Mintz ordered compensatory payment be made in the sum of NIS 47,500, voicing sharp criticism against the ministry for taking such harsh actions unjustifiably. 3. Now if only the AJC would defend JEWS from Arab nazis: COMMENTARY Outrage.org By JACK ROSEN MoveOn.org, an advocacy group, has sought to energize opposition to the president by sponsoring a contest in which Americans were urged to produce an anti-Bush advertisement to air the week of the State of the Union address. Web site visitors were invited to vote for their favorite ad from a pre-selected group that MoveOn.org deems appropriate for TV. MoveOn.org informed potential ad makers that "we're not going to post anything that would be inappropriate for television." Two of the ads posted on the group's Web site compared Adolf Hitler to George W. Bush. One ad morphed an image of Hitler into President Bush and says that, "1945's war crimes" are "2003's foreign policy." * * * The Holocaust was the worst crime in history. The Nazis killed six million Jews, and millions of others were murdered in a systematic genocide. Generations were exterminated. Starvation, slave labor, gassing and medical experimentation were tools for the "final solution." The last survivors of that horror will soon pass from among us. Their eyewitness testimony will be lost, and it is for us to ensure that we never forget. It is for them that we have built museums to preserve the horror of these crimes. It is for them that we guard against the danger that the memory of the Holocaust will be trivialized. That danger is abetted when people devalue this monumental evil for political gain. Today, MoveOn.org is doing just that, using the memory of that genocide as a political prop. Their comparison diminishes the reality of what happened, and their actions cheapen the memory of a horrific crime. It also does a terrible disservice to this country at a perilous time, when we need to examine the dangers we face with clarity and purpose. The lessons of the Holocaust era loom larger than ever, but not as portrayed by MoveOn.org. It was from the backbenches of Britain's Parliament in the 1930s that Churchill warned of the "gathering storm," arguing that the great threat had to be confronted before it was too late. His warning went unheeded. Free nations stood idle as the Nazis harnessed their war machine. Democracies naively hoped for peace. They turned from evil, but the evil did not fade, and when World War II ended 50 million were dead. With terrorists operating under the protection of rogue regimes, Churchill's warning is still apt today. Leadership is about confronting threats to freedom everywhere. President Bush has shown that leadership in Iraq, and our troops have liberated a people who were oppressed by another murderous dictator. MoveOn.org compares this liberation to the Holocaust. It deploys a picture of Hitler to vilify President Bush. Comparing the commander-in-chief of a democratic nation to the murderous tyrant Hitler is not only historically specious, it is morally outrageous. Comparing an American president, any American president, to Hitler is an outrage. The MoveOn.org ad was inexcusable. Political figures such as Al Gore, who have associated themselves with MoveOn.org, have a special responsibility to condemn these ads; donors to the group such as George Soros have the same responsibility. They owe it not just to the memory of the millions who died in the Holocaust. They owe it also as a simple matter of decency. Mr. Rosen is president of the American Jewish Congress. Subject: Leftists are from Mars Leftists are From Mars By Steven Plaut Well, now that the US satellite ?Spirit? has been set down safely by NASA on Mars, it occurred to me that these live pictures of the charms of Mars carry enormous political implications. Here are a few: I believe NASA has discovered a place where the Palestinians could safely be granted their own state without it threatening genocide against anyone else. NASA seems to have discovered a place at last where socialism has not yet failed. The satellite has found a place even more frightening for youngsters than the Neverland Ranch. It seems to be an area that Al Gore could carry in an election even without counting the chads. It has at least as much water as Saudi Arabia, so why not ship the Saudis there and take away their oil? What a wonderful place to ship all those anti-globalization protesters, because it has not been polluted by capitalism and American mass culture. If we sent those Hollywood actors who opposed the Iraq War to Mars they could at last be the smartest people around. The International Solidarity Movement could be sent to show its solidarity with Mars slime. No one would have to use racial profiling there to identify the terrorists. Clinton could drop his trousers there and no one would care. If we sent her there, Andrea Dworkin would be the most beautiful chick around. Professors could teach Deconstructionism there and no one would break out laughing. If we sent all the tort lawyers there, they would be the most honest people on the planet. Al Sharpton could be reunited with other members of his zoological genus. Any leftists there would never again have to whine about how the Right controls Talk Radio. Dennis Kucinich and Michael Moore could serve as commandants of the first Martian collectivized farm. Leftist can at last be happy there, with no Starbucks, no SUVs, and no MacDonald?s. Shimon Peres can at last find a place where there really is no military solution to the problems of terrorism. Yossi Beilin can sign a peace agreement with the natives that will be not be violated by them within ten seconds. Tikkun?s Michael Lerner can be accepted there at last as the Planetary Rabbi and no one will challenge his credentials or ordination. Yassir Arafat would be the star on Bay Watch Mars, in his Speedo. Hillary could ask some Martians to help her write her own personal self-revealing autobiography. Liberals could implement affirmative action preferences for the red fungus there. A Scandinavian I actually Like: COMMENTARY Ouch! It's Hot! By BJORN LOMBORG Altero Matteoli, Italy's environment minister and the host of last month's U.N. climate change conference in Milan, was reported to have had "great expectations" for the event. But these expectations were ill-founded -- largely because the case for the "global strategy" which the event promoted was vastly overstated. At the conference, Mr. Matteoli referred to the "extreme climatic events" of 2003 and linked these to the need for a global response to climate change. Earlier in 2003, the same theme was expanded on by Rajendra K. Pachauri, influential chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Dr. Pachauri claimed there was "growing evidence" that severe climatic events were linked to global warming and concentration of greenhouse gases. He appeared to claim that climate change was already having a serious, negative impact on the world, in the form of heatwaves and severe summers. In fact, the link between climate change and the extreme weather events we have experienced to date is doubtful. The connection between global warming and Europe's summer heat waves is particularly tenuous. Global warming has generally only decreased the number of cold days. Dr. Pachauri's own organization has shown that global warming generally affects minimum temperatures much more than maximum temperatures. Therefore warming has mainly taken place in the winter, not the summer. On both hemispheres and for all seasons, night temperatures have increased much more than day temperatures. As I outlined in my book "The Skeptical Environmentalist," global warming will eventually affect maximum temperatures and cause heat waves. But first, it is more likely to lead to fewer cold spells -- saving lives in winter. In the United States it is estimated that cold weather causes twice as many deaths as heat waves. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DOW JONES REPRINTS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This copy is for your personal, non-commercial use only. There are more people in the world, especially in cities and coastal areas. Extreme weather affects more people than before, and -- because of increasing prosperity -- more absolute wealth is lost. Such facts are less salacious than the concept that global warming is killing us with extreme weather today. But when we get away from the facts, we do not make sound policy decisions. Some have even argued that panicked speculation and a desire to do something helped to bring about the well-meaning but flawed Kyoto Protocol. Estimates from all macroeconomic models show that implementing Kyoto will cost $150-$350 billion globally every year, merely to postpone the temperature rise by six years from 2100 to 2106. It is a very expensive way to achieve very little. Some argue that we should do more than merely implement Kyoto. The environmental group, WWF, claims that the world should only be allowed to warm by two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit). German representatives at Milan pushed for international agreement on the "two degrees or less" vision. The expense involved would be very large, yet logic would dictate that if the first step -- Kyoto -- is inefficient, then further steps in the same direction will not necessarily be good either. There is an even more important cost than the financial impact of implementing Kyoto: the cost of lost opportunities. If we could solve every problem facing the world, then perhaps implementing Kyoto would make sense. But our finances are limited. For the cost of Kyoto in just the year 2010, we could solve the biggest problem facing mankind: we could permanently provide clean drinking water and sanitation for every person in the world. We need to ask if our priorities are being set by reasoned logic or panicked speculation. If the latter is true, conferences like the one in Milan create little real benefit for mankind -- and possibly more alarm. Mr. Lomborg is the author of "The Skeptical Environmentalist" (Cambridge, 2001). URL for this article: http://online.wsj.com/article/0,,SB107300335813187000,00.html Thursday, January 01, 2004
