ANOTHER Scholarly Source and Colleague of Juan Cole

We recently documented the deep involvement, identification, and
collaboration of Prof. Juan Cole, who is serving as reigning "Rais" of the
Middle East Studies Association, with one Dennis "Justin" Raimondo, who
edits the anti-American pro-terror antiwar.com. Raimondo fabricated a
conspiracy "theory" about how supposedly dem Joos were the real ones who
knocked down the World Trade Center all to make bin Laden and his 19 Saudi
hijackers look bad. This theory is now staple lard on all neonazi web
sites and some Stalinist ones too, like Pravda, where Raimondo writes a
regular column. Raimondo seems to be determined to act out in his own life
the script from Kevin Abrams' book.

Now Raimondo and his ravings are ordinarily not worth discussing outside
the clinic, and are of interest here only in the fact that Prof. Juan Cole
is a follower and admirer of Raimondo, publicly thanks and compliments
Raiomondo, and publishes his own articles on Raimondo's web site.

At first, we assumed this was just a singular slip in judgment on the part
of our learned professor of Middle East political correctness. Surely Cole
does not know what sort of crackpot Raimondo really is, right?

Wrong!

It turns out that Raimondo is NOT the only far-left-neofascist
conspiracist crackpot with which Cole makes common cause and is on
intimate collegial terms. We checked out the links on Juan Cole's own
personal web site and blog. There we discovered among Cole's list of
"Political and Academic Weblogs" the weblog of Kurt Nimmo.

"Academic" weblog? You may recall that Nimmo is the employment-challenged
New Mexico photographer-wannabe who may or may not have been canned from a
job at his local Walmart's photo lab, who may or may not have finished
high school, the fellow who insists that because of "the neocons" (by
which he means Dem Joos) he just cannot find a job - unlike the many
millions of illegal immigrants who cannot speak English and all find jobs.
Nimmo is a regular columnist for Alexander Cockburn's Counterpunch, and
has been moonlighting as a columnist for Uruknet, the web site base of
Iraqi pro-Saddam exiled Ba'athists.

Nimmo, who makes Raimondo look like a Harvard Dean, claims he is not
really a columnist for the Ba'athist site because he only publishes his
columns there. We counted 40 Nimmo columns on Uruknet. Nimmo also insists
the pro-Saddam site is really run by Italian peace lovers and not
Ba'athist Iraqis, and my guess is his evidence is that his friends there
say "Marhaban, We arrrr Italian Beoble Insh'Allah". And yes, the Saddamist
Uruknet also comes out to endorse Professor Cole, Raimondo and Nimmo, the
merry threesome.

Nimmo has as long a track record of justifying terror, spin doctoring
al-Qaeda, and promoting crackpot conspiracy theories as Raimondo, and
Nimmo is just as openly anti-Semitic.

So the big question for the University of Michigan is how can it be that
one of its profs is someone who regards Nimmo as one of his bona fide
"academic" colleagues and links his personal page to such a critter, a
prof who openly identifies with Justin Raimondo, a prof who is the hero of
the week for the Iraqi Ba'athists. We would ask the Middle East Studies
Association a similar question, about how can Cole be its President under
these circumstances, but we fear we have already answered out own
question.

We are wondering if the next academic weblog and academic source for his
research that Prof. Cole will name will be Rense.com or David Irving's web
site.

Juan of a Kind

The new head of the Middle East Studies Association, Professor Juan Cole
from the University of Michigan, has responded on his own web page to the
in-depth expose of his bias I published recently in Frontpage Magazine.
In that article, Cole.s long history of distortion, ignorance, and bias
was carefully documented. In particular I challenged the Cole Doctrine,
which holds that all terrorism is due to .occupation.. I showed that most
terrorism has nothing to do with .occupation,. that most occupation does
not cause terrorism, and that terrorism is more often the cause than the
consequence of .occupation..

Cole is apparently unable to defend his record against the criticism
contained in my piece and instead complains, in a column on his own web
page, that he was a .victim. of a .GoogleSmear.. By this he means
critical analysis of what he writes, which then gets cited and reposted on
the web, something he dislikes (but can.t answer). He is upset when web
commentators publish correctives to his extremist and unfounded views, and
then these show up whenever someone googles his name in the web.s best
known search engine.

But more importantly, this is all a bit like the libelous pot calling the
kettle black. Cole.s habitual response whenever anyone exposes his errors
and bias is to whine that he is being .smeared.. But Cole has a long
history of smearing and threatening respected scholars like Daniel Pipes
and Martin Kramer, who . unlike Cole . are careful with the facts.
.Googlesmearing. -- as opposed to the fact-filled documented analysis I
wrote in the above FPM article -- is hardly a .new way of discrediting a
political opponent,. as Cole described it. Indeed, Cole and his leftist
friends have been doing it for years.

In his attempt to defend his indefensible record, Cole writes, .The
GoogleSmear depends on subtle changes of wording that make the individual
sound like an idiot.. In all candor, we do not think anyone needs word
changes nor Google to assist in making Juan Cole sound like an idiot.
Noam Chomsky has said, .Juan Cole is a very serious and knowledgeable
analyst.. Need we say more?

Cole.s .idiot. reference is actually meant to refer to a small piece of my
original article (before I corrected it), which mistook a spoof of what
Cole writes for the real thing. But what does it say about Cole that.s
hard to tell the difference? In any case, unlike Cole, I am happy to
acknowledge an error when I make it, since it is not . as it is with him .
the very substance of my discourse.

No sooner does Cole complain about .dubious facts. in the Frontpage piece
about him and about his being a victim of .GoogleSmear. than he himself
decides to illustrate GoogleSmear for his readers by performing it against
me. Thus, his first and main defense of his good name is to repeat a lie
about myself invented earlier this week by his crony, superior ship.s
officer, and editor at antiwar.com, Dennis .Justin. Raimondo. Cole
clearly regards Raimondo as a legitimate, authoritative source of
information, while complaining that his critics rely on dubious sources.
We counted 14,400 web pages in which the names Juan Cole and Justin
Raimondo appear together.

One is known by the company that one keeps and Cole keeps intimate company
with Raimondo, who is best known for fabricating a conspiracy theory
reprinted on neonazi web sites all over the Internet about how Jews
supposedly knocked down the World Trade Center to make poor bin Laden look
bad. Raimondo has even self-published this theory as a .book.. Cole
obviously has no problems being associated with a crackpot like Raimondo
nor with citing his libelous ravings as .authoritative.. And then he
complains that we at Frontpage Magazine are responsible for his own
damaged reputation.

Cole rests the better part of his .self-defense. on labeling me .an
Israeli defender of the terrorists (sic) around the late extremist Rabbi
Meir Kahane,. the fellow who set up the Jewish Defense League. So what is
the source of this invention reported with scholarly seriousness by
Professor Juan Cole? Why, it is Justin Raimondo himself, of course! In
fact, Cole thanks Raimondo profusely on his web page for smearing me as a
supposed Kahanist.

The only problem is that I am not. Raimondo.s evidence for this smear
against me is that he googled my name and the word .Kahanist. together,
and discovered two articles of mine in which I used the word .Kahanist. in
the text. But that was all he found. In neither article did I express
any support for the Kahanists or Kahanism. Talk about Googlesmears!
Cole, also accuses me of posting comments under a false name on a web
bulletin board and accuses me of using illegal drugs, which is equally
fanciful and absurd.

Not only have I never been a Kahanist, but - on the contrary - I have been
a critic of Kahane and his organization for well over 30 years, and have
been attacked by the Kahane movement on more than one occasion. But such
facts cannot be expected to deter the scholarly head of the Middle East
Studies Association, Juan Cole, and his conspiracist mentor Raimondo in
their zeal to discredit my analysis of Cole's actual positions and
performance. Cole, by the way, is as fond of infantile conspiracist
.theories. as Raimondo, and . again like his mentor . likes to spread
anti-Jewish libels. Both Raimondo and Cole have a habit of responding to
any documentation of their lies by shrieks and slanders and with threats.

Cole never quite gets around to addressing the main criticism against him
that appeared in my FPM article, namely that his theory that .terrorism is
caused by occupation. is without empirical foundation. In his column, he
simply repeats his "theory" that occupation produces terrorism, whereas in
fact the reverse is more commonly the case.

If the Cole Doctrine were true, why did the illegal Chinese occupation of
Tibet not produce terrorism? . that was one of the many questions I asked
in my column attacking Cole.s .theory.! Cole responds on his web page:
because "the Tibetan population was not socially mobilized," adding, "the
Chinese government certainly saw the Kampa revolt of 1959 to be a
terrorist action." Actually a handful of Kampas struggled against the
Maoist colonialists, starting in 1951. Leave it up to a
socially-mobilized apologist for Maoism like Cole to denounce these Kampa
rebels, who never targeted civilians, as terrorists, while the Hizbollah
and the Hamas . real terrorist organizations that embrace Osama.s jihad .
these are legitimate anti-occupation protest movements in Juan Cole.s
eyes.

Cole then adds: "The Zionist Right maintains that you can't criticize
Israeli violations of basic human rights and international law until you
first criticize all the other 188 countries in the world." Cole is not
too far off this time. Human rights are a hundred times better respected
and protected in Israel than in the next-best Middle East countries and
better than in close to 188 others. Someone who harps constantly on
supposed human rights abuses by Israel . which is a way to demonize and
delegitimize Israel, a country under threat of annihilation from the Arab
dictatorships Cole supports - while ignoring human rights in other
countries is acting in behalf of malevolent political agendas.

It is exactly like those who shrieked in the late 1930s about human rights
abuses of ethnic Germans in Czechoslovakia, while ignoring the fact the
human rights record of Czechoslovakia was far better than in the countries
seeking to delegitimize and destroy it. Professor Cole resents anyone
questioning his real motives. Does he really imagine that his bluster
against the .Zionist Right. will hide his attempts to promote the agendas
of the anti-Semitic Left?

Cole takes sanctimonious exception to the fact that I referred to the
Sudanese murdering people in southern Sudan as "Arabs" and noted that
those being massacred in Sudan are black Africans. The ruling classes in
Sudan consist of people who speak Arabic, are Moslems, run a program of
coerced "Arabization" in the country, and Sudan is a member of the Arab
League. Their victims are black Africans, even if much of the Sudanese
murdering class is also black.

After raising the Sudan race issue, which was never mentioned at all in
the Frontpage piece criticizing him, Cole insists that this proves that
"The rightwing Zionists want to racialize the Sudan conflict." We wonder
how many people are capable of reading Cole's web site without the
constant need to shout "Huh??!!" By the way, lots of Israeli Jews are
black also. What does that make them, Professor Cole, well - besides
right-wing Zionists?

Standing back to view the man whom the leftwing Middle Eastern experts on
America.s college campuses have made the quarterback of their
anti-American game plan, here is Cole.s view of bin Laden and 9-11 and the
war on terror, taken from Raimondo.s site, where Cole has published many
articles:

"The attack on the World Trade Center was exactly analogous to Pearl
Harbor. The Japanese generals had to neutralize the U.S. fleet so that
they could sweep into Southeast Asia and appropriate Indonesian
petroleum.... Likewise, al-Qaeda was attempting to push the United States
out of the Middle East so that Egypt, Jordan, Israel and Saudi Arabia
would become more vulnerable to overthrow, lacking a superpower patron.
Secondarily, the attack was conceived as revenge on the United States and
American Jews for supporting Israel and the severe oppression of the
Palestinians.... Ironically, however, the Bush administration then went on
to invade Iraq for no good reason."

He then adds:

"Al-Qaeda has succeeded in several of its main goals. It had been trying
to convince Muslims that the United States wanted to invade Muslim lands,
humiliate Muslim men, and rape Muslim women. Most Muslims found this
charge hard to accept. The Bush administration's Iraq invasion, along with
the Abu Ghraib prison torture scandal, was perceived by many Muslims to
validate bin Laden's wisdom and foresight.... The U.S. is not winning the
war on terror. Al-Qaeda also has by no means won. But across a whole range
of objectives, al-Qaeda has accomplished more of its goals than the U.S.
has of its."

In sum, the more Cole complains about those who criticize his extremist
political agenda, his undeniable bias, and his general absence of
scholarship, the more he proves how correct in fact they are.

2. The Knesset rejected the proposal to hold a national referendum by
about 2
to 1 in a vote last night. The pseudo-religious party SHAS joined the
commmunists, the Arab fascists, Tommy Lapid, and the Labor Party in voting
against the proposal. Among Likud MK's, the vote was in FAVOR of the
referendum by about the same 2 to 1, suggesting that the Likud house is
divided against itself and cannot limp on much longer.

the prostitutes from the SHAS "religious" party voting last night together
with Lapid against holding a national referendum.

Tommy Lapid almost dropped his burning Magen David when Gal-on compared
Lapid himself to the SHAS "religious" party which Lapid so despises:
Gal-On said that there was no difference between Shinui and the
ultra-Orthodox parties, and that it was "all a question of price."

Gal-On and her own Meretz party of quasi-commies (a term that rhymes with
kamikazes by the way) have always cheered on Lapid's vile and vulgar
attacks on Judaism and on the Orthodox. Last night, Gal-on's chickens
came home to
roost, as she herself became the target of the chief Klansman's tongue.
She responded, "He is pathetic. He is freaked out. Behind
the so-called liberal exterior there is a sexist, chauvinist and racist
person."

by citing Raimondo.s baseless claim that I am a .Kahanist., that is a
follower of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, who set up the Jewish Defense
League. (Raimondo thinks that anyone who claims that Raimondo.s own
anti-Jewish ravings make him an anti-Semite must in fact be a .Kahanist..)

Raimondo.s .evidence. of all this, accepted as scholarly verification by
.Professor. Cole, is that Raimondo googled my name and the word .Kahanist.
and discovered two articles of mine in which I used the word .Kahanist.,
in neither of which did I express any support for the Kahanists or
Kahansism. I repeat, this is the same Juan Cole who whines that HE is a
victim of .GoogleSmear.!!

Now as it turns out, I am not and have never been a Kahanist; indeed I
have criticized Kahane and his organization for over 30 years, and have

Cole.s closest collaborator Raimondo, in his turn, is godmother of a grand
conspiracy theory about how dem Joos supposedly knocked down the World
Trade Center, all based upon a sock. Yes, a sock. It seems that a
Scottish conspiracist newpaper reported that some Israelis were arrested
(and later cleared and released) in New Jersey on September 11, 2001, and
that one of them had some cash in a sock. Raimondo then took the alleged
cash-in-sock story and erected an entire neonazi .theory. of a Jewish
cabal. None of that seems to bother the learned professor Cole, who
dismisses all Jews who criticize him as .Kahansists., yet refuses to
renounce the neonazi .theory. of his close associate and editor Raimondo.

Now the time has come for all serious scholars to help our the
Cole-Raimondo team in doing research and in developing their conspiracist

Foreign Exchange Program for Terror

College exchange students often visit other countries to learn of other
cultures, appreciate the past, or gain valuable insight into other
regions. Few go to be indoctrinated consciously for the purposes of
political -- and literal -- warfare. However, the International Solidarity
Movement and the Bethlehem Bible College have put together a program that
does just that.

The ISM has long sent American students to the Middle East, where they
undergo training by the ISM-ally, the Popular Front for the Liberation of
Palestine, a known terrorist group, and then physically obstruct Israeli
forces trying to nab Palestinian terrorists. Front Page Magazine.s
exposure of the ISM and the much-publicized deaths of two ISM-affiliated
students, American Rachel Corrie and Englishman Tom Hurndall, led to
dwindling recruitment numbers. Heightened scrutiny of terrorist
organizations as well as a recent Israeli crackdown on ISM leaders like
Kate Raphael has forced George Rishmawi, a Canadian-Palestinian Communist
who co-founded the ISM, to rethink his organization.s tactics. Now the
radical group has hit upon using international student exchanges in its
campaign to aid the cause of Palestinian genocidal terror.

Mindful of the setbacks suffered by his activist troops, Rishmawi has set
about remaking the ISM. For starters, he has rechristened the ISM the
Palestine Summer Encounter (PSE). PSE has even managed to find a shill at
Bethlehem Bible College in the West Bank to offer U.S. academic credit in
Arabic. That will make the .educational. program of value to Middle East
study centers across the U.S., many of which have been turned into de
facto lobbying and propaganda bases calling for the dismantling of Israel.
Incidently, generous Saudi and PLO grants are funding these programs.

The PSE.s program will be financed by the Holy Land Trust, a
California-based NGO. Already the Holy Land Trust has caused headaches for
U.S. counterterrorism officials by funding Palestinian NGOs that refuse to
guarantee that the U.S. Agency for International Development funds they
receive won.t be used to bankroll terrorism. The trust is run by Executive
Director Sami Awad, who formerly headed the Palestine Children.s Welfare
Relief Fund, an outfit that routinely featured photos and praise of
suicide bombers on its website. According to Arab-American Christian
journalist Joseph Farah, editor of World Net Daily: .The lies this group
tells in the name of Christianity are big and bold. They include the
standard lines about Jews robbing the homes of Arabs, stealing their land
and brutalizing them in a repressive state of military occupation. These
so-called Christians even rationalize terrorism.. A further look at Holy
Land Trust.s website shows it is clearly political and designed to
demonize .occupier. Israel.

But if the background of the Holy Land Trust is alarming, the program it
is intended to underwrite is even more so. An article on the PSE program
that appeared in the leftist Israeli newspaper Haaretz states, .The PSE
program includes an Arabic course at the Bethlehem Bible College, with
credits going toward a U.S. college degree; volunteer work with
Palestinian aid organizations as well as Israeli peace groups; and trips,
mostly in the West Bank, but also within the Green Line [along Israel.s
border]. The students are hosted by Palestinian families which lowers the
price for participants; the hosts also receive some payment..

In order for students to attend Bethlehem Bible College.s anti-Israel
indoctrination courses for credit, they must be enrolled in schools that
have granted accreditation. Yet one can be certain that students studying
Arabic at this college will also be advancing the ISM.s ultimate political
goal: the destruction of Israel. The Haaretz article explains that
.regardless of background, after a summer in the Palestinian territories,
participants come away with a clear political picture..

The article notes that, previously, participants were reluctant to sign up
for the program. .Nearly all say they shied away from visiting the area
till now because of the cost and that one PSE attraction was its
reasonable price,. the article explains. The .reasonable price. has to do
with subsidies paid by the PLO to import their radical cheerleaders.

As for said importation, as Front Page has revealed, ISM formerly
transported most of its volunteers over to the Holy Land free of charge by
abusing a Birthright Israel program. This program was set up by wealthy
Jewish philanthropists to encourage immigration to Israel and appreciation
for the Jewish state. Rather than supporting this mission, however, the
ISM.s volunteers focused their energies on denouncing Israel as an
.apartheid state. while excusing terrorism and violence against Israelis
as .legitimate resistance.. As a consequence of such revelations,
Birthright Israel applicants have come under greater scrutiny. Funds for
the ISM.s free rides have consequently dried up. In Bethlehem Bible
College, the ISM seems to have discovered a new way for an even wider
group to gain entrance into Israel while cheering its destruction. Indeed,
the program is in some ways even more convenient than Birthright Israel.
Whereas the Birthright program could only be used for free transportation
by anarchists and communists of Jewish ancestry, the Bethlehem College is
far more inclusive: any student radical who favors Israel.s demise is
welcome.

So what exactly is the Bethlehem Bible College? According to the ISM
website, .Bethlehem Bible College seeks to train and prepare Christian
servants.leaders for the churches and society within an Arab context.. As
to what is meant by .Arab context,. a clue comes from the views of
Bethlehem Bible College President Bishara Awad. Although thousands of
Christians have fled the Holy Land in recent decades due to Muslim
persecution, Awad blames the Jewish State for their departure. .Israeli
persecution is .first and foremost. to blame for Christian (and Muslim)
emigration,. he claims.

Indeed, according to Awad, Israel is the greatest force for religious
oppression in the Middle East. He has claimed: .We, Muslims and Christians
alike, have been on the receiving end of oppression since 1967. The
occupation is the root cause of economic deterioration. Some people can.t
live under constant pressure for a long time; so they emigrate when they
are no longer able or willing to withstand oppression..

Asked to comment on Israeli allegations that many Christians leave the
Middle East as a result of harassment by Muslims, Awad flatly denies the
charge. .This is not true,. he says. .I have not seen any attack on our
churches or institutions. We are like brothers here. We share in and
attend each other.s social occasions. We are one people..

Awad.s revisionism would come as significant news to anyone who witnessed
the takeover of the Church of the Nativity by Arafat.s thugs in 2002. In
addition, Muslim desecration of non-Islamic shrines, both Jewish and
Christian, is well documented. Indeed, Christians are considered dhimmis,
or second-class citizens, in Islamic society, and as such are subject to
Muslim whim. Christian businessmen and shops are frequently shaken down by
PLO members in protection rackets. Small wonder, then, that the Christian
population in Bethlehem has decreased from 80 percent to just five percent
since the creation of the Palestinian Authority in 1994. Furthermore, the
state of religious freedom in Israel cannot credibly be compared to the
Palestinian territories. Where Israel boasts a longstanding respect for
religious pluralism, the Palestinian territories, in accord with Article 7
of the Palestinian Authority Constitution, are subject to Shari'a or
Islamic law.

That Awad is willing to ignore the troubling record of Islamic attitudes
toward Christianity in order to vilify Israel says much about the
educational environment at Bethlehem College. Indeed, it seems safe to
conclude that through its support of ISM, the college is less likely to
teach Christian reconciliation than to try to convince Christians overseas
to support Islamic hegemony over the Holy Land. It certainly has
considerable resources to do so: according to its website, the college
boasts millions in its budget.

Additional proof that the PSE program is intended to serve as a
recruitment arm for the anti-Israel cause comes from the fact that it
offers students housing with a Palestinian family. In the past, ISM
leaders have stayed in houses where terrorists and suicide bombers had
formerly lived. This makes it probable that PSE students from the U.S. may
actually be living with families implicated in anti-Israel terrorism.
Finally, if the ISM.s history of anti-Israel activism is any indication,
the Palestinian Summer Encounter extracurricular activities will almost
certainly include interfering with the IDF.s anti-terrorist operations.

Despite the PSE.s extremist agenda, it is billed under the
postcard-pleasant mantra: .Come to Palestine, Stay with Friends.. But a
more accurate description of the PSE program would read like this: Come to
a war zone. Learn how to promote Muslim hegemony over the Jews and
Christians. And get college credit, too.

Dennis ?Justin? Raimondo is no doubt the very best illustration of the merging today between leftwing extremism and neonazism. Raimondo is one of th emost notorious leftwing nazis in America. He is editor of the far-left ?Antiwar.com? web site which combines support for Islamic terrorism with open anti-Semitism. IT features, among its regulat columnists, Juan Cole, anti-Israel professor of Middle East studies at the University of Michigan, and Ran HaCohen, anti-Israel pro-Hizbollah ?researcher? from Tel Aviv University. Raimondo himself is probably best known for fabricating a Chamish-like ?theory? about how Israel was really behind the 91?attack on New York, a theory that has long been a staple on neonazi crackpot web pages. Raimondo?s evidence? Well, on the same day, 9-11, the FBI arrested four (Raimondo says five) Israelis they thought looked ?suspicious?. The Israelis were working on a moving van. Anyone from NY can tell you that almost all th emoving
van companies in the city are operated by ex-Israelis, many of them in the US illegally. Raimondo decided that the van workers, guilty perhaps of not proper immigration visas, were in fact the tip of an Israeli conspiracy to topple the World Trade Center and have the poor innocent al-Qaeda take the blame. Raimondo?s ?evidence?? Well, the Israelis had ?multiple passports?, which I guess means two. Lots of people in the US and in Israel hav emore than one passport. One Israeli also had over $4000 hidden in a sock. Which in fact is evidence more of the Israeli being stupid (or not having papers to open a legal bank account). Raimondo built all this up into a grand crackpot conspiracy ?theory? and even got it published (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/0595296823/qid=1111908109/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_2_1/702-7555842-5247241), apparently self-published. SO who exactly is this clown?
Frontpage Magazine recently "outed" neofascist DENNIS "JUSTIN" RAIMONDO, operator of the seditious and fanatically anti-American Antiwar.com blog. But FPM is not the only outfit that believes that Dennis "Justin" Raimondo's politics might just stem back to his frustration over his inability to become a scout leader in the Hitlerjugend.

The National Director of the Anti-Defamation League has also denounced Dennis the Menace as a vicious anti-Semite promoting anti-Semitic conspiracy "theories." Stephen Schwartz called him a "notorious Saddamizer and admirer of Axis seditionists." Ben Johnson has noted Raimondo's role in the axis of evil that joins antiiwar protesters and neonazis.

Raimondo has repeated and spread lies invented by neonazis suggesting that Jews had something to do with the 9-11 attacks. Steven Schwartz wrote:

"This was the individual who, almost single-handedly, conflated a mass of disconnected rumors into the theory that Israel stood behind the atrocities of that terrible day. Since then, this Dennis-the-wannabe-Menace has remained best known for selling that product, while traveling back and forth across a no-man?s-land of neofascist bizarrerie. He also has enjoyed a brief notoriety as an inciter to mutiny in the armed forces, warning that American soldiers should not ?die for Israel .? ...Dennis Raimondo is not an intellectual, or a journalist, or even much of a writer.... Dennis Raimondo has refined political and moral inconsistency, if not pure hypocrisy, to a level that is almost unique."

Elsewhere Schwartz adds:

"What is the difference between Dennis "Justin" Raimondo, who publicly encouraged U.S. service personnel to desert, not long before the Iraq operation began, and his ally, Kevin "Keith Sorel" Keating, who carried a banner in the streets calling on the same troops to `shoot their officers?' In practical terms, nothing."

The semi-literate Raimondo compares the super-scholar Daniel Pipes to David Duke because Pipes does not endorse Raimondo's support for Islamist fascism. It is precisely because of that support that Alexander Cockburn praises neofascist Raimondo. Interestingly, Raimondo seems to hate not only Americans and Jews but even Ukrainians. What would he make of a Jewish American whose grandparents came from the Ukraine?

One thing that has us puzzled is why Raimondo considers it insulting to be compared to David Duke. After all, we can think of no one who so resembles David Duke more than Dennis himself, and if the white sheet fits then he should wear it. Raimondo is a cross between David Duke and Elmer Fudd. No wonder Juan Cole wants to be a regular official contributor to the Raimondo web site!

More than one writer has represented Dennis Raimondo (who has written a column for Russia's Pravda for years) as an enemy agent, seeking to harm the United States.

If you have been following the crackpot press these past couple of years,
and by that I mean the assorted neo-Nazi web sites, white supremacy
magazines, and the ?anarchist? and anti-globalization ?alternative? commie
press, you will know that they have been filled with nutty conspiracy
theories about how Israelis were somehow involved in 9/11. Dennis the
Menace is the inventor of the "theory".

Naturally, the Islamofascist crowd adopted these ?theories.? Their ?proof? was that a handful of Israelis working as moving men got themselves arrested under what the police at first thought were suspicious circumstances. This, asserted the lobotomy candidates, proved that the Mossad or other Jewish cabals were really behind 9/11 and not those 19 Arabs who actually carried out the atrocities. The standards of proofs and methodologies of evidence behind these ?theories? might have made Barry Chamish proud.

A few months back the four Israelis at the center of the incident decided
to take action to put these scurrilous rumors to rest.

In a statement dated September 14, the Israelis announced they have filed a law suit against the Department of Justice in the United States District Court in New York, alleging that law enforcement officers and officials of the Bureau of Prisons unlawfully incarcerated them for an extended period of time and violated their civil rights during their more than two month imprisonment in the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in 2001. The four plaintiffs claim that they were held incommunicado without access to attorneys or family, subjected to rough interrogations, physically assaulted, deprived of sleep and subjected to racists taunting by guards. The law suit seeks millions of dollars in compensation.

The Israelis say they were working for a New Jersey moving company when their truck was stopped by police near the George WashingtonBridge. When it was discovered that they possessed foreign drivers licenses, the nervous officers placed them under arrest as suspects in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. They were than handed over to federal agents for weeks of interrogation.

It was this arrest that got the conspiracy theorists in the Arab and Islamic world going, spreading reports that was behind the terrorist atrocities. Islamic and neo-Nazi groups pointed to the arrests of the Israelis as ?proof? that the Mossad and Israel had perpetrated the attack on the World Trade Center. Hate groups around the world posted hundreds of stories centering on the arrests of the Israelis and their alleged role in the 9/11 attacks.

Eventually, the US Department of Justice came out of the closet and put an end to all the fruitcake anti-Semitic conspiracy nonsense But the fact that the four were eventually cleared of all suspicions and released did not put the libels to rest, and stories about the Israelis are still regularly appearing on the internet.

American human rights groups have also charged that the Bureau of Prisons violated the civil liberties of those detained by the United States following 9/11. And following an internal investigation the Department of Justice released a report in June, 2003, which, in part, found: ?the evidence indicates a pattern of physical and verbal abuse by some correctional officers at the MDC against some September 11 detainees, particularly during the first months after the attack.?

But perhaps the last word should go to the plaintiffs? Israeli counsel, Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, who goes to the heart of the law suit?s greater meaning. According to Leitner: ?The infamous arrest of these young Israelis on 9/11 has been used by anti-Semites worldwide as ?proof? of Israel?s involvement in the World Trade Center attack. Our clients are seeking compensation for the harm they suffered in the MDC by prison officials. In addition, the law suit will serve as an important forum to debunk the lie that Israel or the Mossad was behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It will show that there was no Jewish conspiracy as the Arab world continues to claim and put an end to this racist blood libel.?

Poor Justin Raimondo. Your correspondent?s humble request that the Antiwar.com chieftain provide a link to his site?s attacks on al-Qaeda, which he assured us do in fact exist, seems to have sent him into something approaching a meltdown. Indeed, the request for evidence has earned yours truly the droll title of ?Commissar Laksin? and the assertion that I?m engaging in libel. Now that?s touchy, even for a libertarian. For all his bluster, however, I?m happy to report that Justin has obliged.

Just one problem: It doesn?t help his case.

In fact, the September 2001 piece starts off on a rather embarrassing note for our paleo-propagandist, as he confidently predicts that the invasion of Afghanistan, so feverishly desired by the hated neo-con quislings, will not happen after all?an assertion that does not, to say the least, recommend Raimondo?s powers of political analysis. But never mind that. Let?s turn to the good stuff, the smash-mouth attacks on our nation?s Islamist enemies. Yes, well, you see, the trouble is? those don?t exist. Instead, Raimondo makes Bin Laden?s case for him, rehearsing the litany of supposed terrorist grievances and calling it analysis. Thus:

"To point out that it is a mistake to garrison thousands of American soldiers on the Saudi peninsula does not justify the destruction of the World Trade Center: it only helps us to understand why it happened. To hold that it does not serve American interests to unconditionally support Israel hardly justifies terrorism. To say that the continual bombing of Iraq is a war crime is not to engage in `moral equivalence' ? it is to state a fact glaringly obvious to the Arab `street' and Muslims all over the world. To point to the sources and inspiration of bin Laden's movement is not to prettify it but to analyze it: for only by such sober analysis will it be possible to rip up the terrorist network by its roots. Those roots are ideological, in the conviction that the American and British `crusaders' are out to destroy Islamic civilization?"

Elsewhere, Raimondo avers:

"The massive intelligence failure that made September 11 possible can be fixed ? some seem to think ? by throwing money at the problem and a quick change of personnel. But the real failure, here, is of our interventionist foreign policy. (emphasis mine)"

If you?re thinking that this sounds less like a rhetorical broadside against al-Qaeda and more like threadbare isolationist boilerplate, you?re in possession of an I.Q. at least twice the mean of Antiwar.com. Which, I regret to say, is not a noteworthy achievement.

A few final points: Raimondo takes issue with my calling Michael Scheuer a ?disgraced? CIA agent: ?Scheuer is ?disgraced? because ? well, he got a bad review in Commentary.? Um, no, Justin, Scheuer is disgraced because he has gone from authoring intelligence reports on matters of pressing national security, however incompetently he did so, to filing crude Israel-bashing polemics for Antiwar.com, where they go to die a slow, unread death.

One can understand Raimondo?s sympathy for Scheuer as he seems to share the shamed spook's belief that Israel is a ?theocracy-in-all-but-name.? Justin writes, ?And we aren?t supposed to ask why a nation that isn?t a theocracy wants to be known as ?the Jewish state.??

First, it never fails to amaze me how the margins of the Left and Right gravel about their inability to say certain things even as they?re saying them. If Raimondo were more honest, he would say what?s really bugging him: namely, that no one?s listening. No doubt that hurts, old sport. But, as the late Hubert Humphrey used to say, the right to freedom of speech does not imply the right to be taken seriously.

The second point seems too blindingly obvious to make, but this is Antiwar.com so we must take nothing for granted. The fact that Israel is a largely Jewish state does not make it a ?theocracy? any more than Europe?s Christian heritage makes that continent a theocracy or the Judeo-Christian ethic at the heart of American culture makes our country a theocracy. A theocracy would be a country like, say, Iran. You know Iran, Justin. That?s the country your coherency-challenged contributors are so assiduously shilling for.

Justin Raimondo: An American Neo-Fascist

Dennis ?Justin? Raimondo is a minor celebrity in the U.S., thanks to a 10-year career as an amateur demagogue in the libertarian milieu of the San Francisco Bay Area, a political environment where anything goes and nothing matters. He has the familiar personality traits of the type: ?sentimental formlessness, absence of disciplined thought, ignorance combined with gaudy erudition.? He poses as a conservative but maintains a website at antiwar.com, that features anti-American cranks like Noam Chomsky and is hugely popular with the left ? not surprisingly since it views America as an incipient fascist state.

Raimondo is a confused and confusing person, who seeks to be the master of the confusion he creates. Born plain Dennis, he renamed himself Justin, while attending the Cherry Lawn School, a defunct prep school in Darien, Conn., which he graduated in 1970.

Raimondo unquestionably encompasses many contradictions. Now past 50, he features a photo of himself on his website with a cigarette dangling from his mouth, in a fey (and failed) pose as an homme fatale. He is flamboyantly gay, but promotes himself as a Buchananite conservative and was in fact Buchanan?s San Francisco campaign spokesman during the ?culture war? that other gays took personally, many elections ago. The entire package is deceitful, and it is a calculated deceit.

The movement that Raimondo has cobbled out of opponents of the Iraq war, who are drawn into his site, is unabashedly fascist. Justin Raimondo personifies an American ?red-brown? alliance, like the one that surfaced briefly in the 1930s when Communists and Nazis combined forces to bring down the Weimar Republic. This alliance was revived after the fall of Russian Communism, when Stalinists and fascists around the world united on an old platform ? war against the Jews ? of which more will be said further on.

Raimondo?s own understanding of fascism ? a word he himself throws carelessly around when defaming political enemies and disarming potential critics -- is utterly superficial. In a preposterous column titled ?A Fascist America,? (March 3, 2005), he defines fascism as follows:

1) ?The idealization of the State as the embodiment of an all-powerful national will or spirit;

2) ?The leader principle, which personifies the national will in the holder of a political office (whether democratically elected or otherwise is largely a matter of style);

3) ?The doctrine of militarism, which bases an entire legal and economic system on war and preparations for war.?

Of course. applied to America this is absurd. Outside the neo-Nazi fringe, no Americans, least of all Republicans, idealize the state. The ?leader principle? is not only not in evidence, it is almost absent in a political season when the President has been attacked more viciously than any chief executive in memory; and it is pretty difficult to refer to American ?militarism? when the country?s security rests on a military that is voluntary and under attack. In the same column, while attempting to draw a parallel between opponents of the anti-war crowd and fascists, Raimondo even lends credibility to Hitler?s fairy tale that the Nazi seizure of power was a response to ?the imminent danger of Communist revolution? ? a particularly absurd assertion since the Communists actively colluded with the Nazis in their attacks on Weimar?s democracy and passively supported Hitler?s accession to power.

In an attempt to smear America even further (as if that would be possible) Raimondo throws in Augusto Pinochet, the left?s favourite example of an American puppet. But Pinochet never idealized the Chilean state, or promoted a cult of himself as a leader, or prepared for war or waged war against any foreign country, as required by Raimondo?s fascist model. Pinochet even organized a democratic referendum that removed him from power. Indeed, Pinochet was no more than a typical, short-term military dictator of a type seen all over Latin America, bereft of charisma or serious ideology. His rise to power was the consequence of historical accidents, not of ideology or mass mobilization, and he left behind a thriving democracy.

Raimondo himself, on the other hand, has much in common with the true historical type. He once sought notoriety as a leftist, but now poses as a rightist, a pattern first set by Mussolini in 1915. Years ago Raimondo attempted to become a Republican leader in San Francisco but was quickly dumped after boring the small party group in that city with his pretensions and diatribes. He took over a new conservative tabloid in San Francisco and soon put it out of business by turning every front page into a showcase for headlines about himself.

He has always wanted to be considered an author and journalist, no less than a political figure. At about 13 or so, he seems to have imagined himself as a science fictioneer. But he never had the discipline or stamina to apply himself to any profession aside from that of absurdist publicity hound. He has failed as a journalist and political commentator, exactly as Hitler failed as a painter, as Mussolini failed as a socialist leader, and as the most notorious fascist of the left, Fidel Castro, failed as a lawyer.

Like his models, when Raimondo never engages intellectually with opponents, but relies on invective, insults, and innuendo. Notwithstanding his bizarre and vulnerable persona as a gay Buchananite, he glories in violating the privacy of others. He is obsessed with exposing neoconservatives as ?Trotskyites,? a largely spurious claim, since the most famous example among the original neoconservatives, Irving Kristol, was a Trotskyist for only a year, nearly seventy years ago, and only a handful of recent ex-leftists ? almost entirely ex-Democrats ? are leading neo-conservatives today.

The psychological term for Raimondo?s posturing is ?projection.? He is obsessed with rooting out alleged political, ideological, and even religious chameleons, with the unconscious intent of advertising his own political transvestism. This pattern is evident in all his activities: he claims that America is becoming a dictatorship, the better to justify his own ambitions for power. He defends the establishment media against criticism by conservative weblog authors, although without the rise of the ?blogs? he would be nothing. Until the launch of Buchanan?s unreadable (and soon to be defunct) American Conservative, his only place of publication was the paleo-conservative Chronicles.

Posing as a war-hater, Raimondo defends murderous dictators like Milosevic, who unleashed the only wars in Europe over the past half century. He presents the Ba?athist party-states in Iraq and Syria as victims of the malicious West and openly wished that Japan had won the Second World War, while fiercely alleging his patriotic motivations. When it comes to America?s present wars, he revels in a repellent defeatism. The heinous attacks on America on 9/11 become for him an explanation of American ?fascism.?

Taking a leaf from his comic-book canon of political wisdom, Raimondo describes fascism as a product of ?the traumatic humbling of a power once considered mighty.? He cites Germany defeated in the First World War, while ignoring that Italy, where fascism originated, was a victor in that war, as was the third Axis power, Japan. Perhaps this omission can be ascribed to the fact that Raimondo idolizes Japan, which was at the height of its power when it attacked Pearl Harbor. As he wrote so eloquently, in an article titled. ?Hiroshima Mon Amour: Why Americans Are Barbarians,? posted to his site on August 8, 2001, ?the idea that America is, in any sense, a civilized country is easily dispelled.? By contrast, imperialist Japan, which slaughtered millions in East Asia, is his idea of paradise. He believes ?the wrong side won the war in the Pacific.? It is, by the way, extremely doubtful that Raimondo has ever set foot on Japanese soil.

The upshot of Raimondo?s mishmash is his charge that September 11 was ?an enormous defeat for the U.S.,? and thus the source of Bush fascism. Many fascist movements have been expansionist and imperialist, but others were historically known for their promotion of disaffection and demoralization, such as those in France and England before the Second World War, and the isolationist legion in America at the same time, which Raimondo seeks to revive. The Rosetta Stone of his philosophy is Buchanan?s idea of the betrayed ?American republic? ? betrayed by democracy that is ? an ahistorical trope which echoes prior fascist movements.

Classic fascism has other characteristics that resonate in Raimondo?s agendas. He is a fanatical rumormonger, asserting that U.S. war plans against Syria and Iran are nearly operational, while Bush administration policies toward these states have been notably circumspect. He was among the most active disseminators of the legend that an innocuous document, titled ?A Clean Break,? having to do with Israeli foreign policy, was actually a blueprint for the invasion of Iraq.

If, as Mary McCarthy said, every word written by the Stalinist Lillian Hellman was a lie, including ?and? and ?the,? Raimondo is a prevaricator down to the placement of commas, periods, and semicolons. One of his favorite tricks is the mendacious use of hyperlinks, giving the impression that his statements are backed by other sources. These are usually his own articles, immodestly declared by him to be ?classics,? which in fact have little or nothing to do with his latest ravings, but lead to more lies through more links. This, too, is not original with Raimondo; it is the Chomsky method of meretricious citations.

Raimondo calls Abraham Lincoln ?the closest to a dictator that any American president has ever come.? A couple of days later, forgetting or ignoring that statement, he labels President Franklin Roosevelt the ?predecessor? of today?s ?fascism,? and declares that Harry Truman and Winston Churchill were also ?fascist heroes.? At the same time, he tenaciously defends Milosevic ? a dictator who freed no slaves ? and, equally insistently, denies the occurrence of the 1995 massacre of Bosnian Muslims at Srebrenica. He also defames the Albanians, and encourages others on his site to do the same, and then denies being an apologist for Serbian war crimes. He has called the Kosovars ?the Shi?ites of Western Europe? ? meaning, Muslim friends of America, who deserve to be slaughtered. He fervently hopes for a new war between Slavic Macedonians and Albanians, since nothing warms his heart so much as the thought of dead Albanians except, perhaps, the dead ?Zionists? buried in the Twin
Towers
on 9/11.

Calumny is Raimondo?s Socratic method. He refers to David Frum and Richard Perle, two intellectuals who have no governmental authority whatever, as ?strutting martinets.? When I myself attempted to clarify the status of Islam in Uzbekistan, an American ally, while criticizing obstacles to democracy there, he labeled me a defender of torture. He accused me of ?rationalizing the same sort of regime in the U.S.? as in Uzbekistan ? based, according to him, on ?torturing dissidents, shutting out all political opposition, and arresting thousands on account of their political and religious convictions.?

In his latest ridiculous column, ?The Specter of Fascism,? dated March 9, the Raimondian style of revisionist history is in full display. In a single paragraph, he refers to the leftist New York tabloid PM, published in the late 1930s and 1940s, as ?Communist Party-controlled,? which will certainly come as a surprise to Arnold Beichman, a long-serving anti-Communist and former leading editor of the paper. PM was famous as a battleground where Stalinists and anti-Stalinists fought for influence, but was never under Communist control. For one thing, unlike the real Communist press, such as the Daily Worker, PM did not promote an ?antiwar? alliance, during the Stalin-Hitler pact, with the Nazis, of the kind Raimondo wishes to revive today ? which is why PM, a newspaper that went out of business in 1948, still provokes Raimondista rage. Raimondo refers to PM?s identification of pre-1941 isolationists as a ?fifth column,? which Dennis shrieks was ?scurrilous and untrue.? He
?s
wrong. Calling the pro-Axis rabble in America then a ?fifth column? was accurate reporting, just as it is accurate reporting to describe Dennis Raimondo as a sympathizer of America?s enemies now.

Sometimes Raimondo posts other leftwing fascists to do his slandering for him. He has done this with Kevin Keating, infamous for hoisting a banner during the anti-Iraq demonstrations in San Francisco that read: ?We Support Our Troops When They Shoot Their Officers.? If a critic of Saudi Arabia?s support for Wahhabism enters his sights, he will accuse them of fomenting war against the Kingdom. He has, in fact, insisted that the neo-conservatives in the government are actually preparing military action against the Saudis. Raimondo?s protective attitudes towards the Saudis derive perhaps from the fact he and the Saudi princes share a commitment to the fable of ?Zionist? involvement in 9/11.

For Raimondo, the Great Satan is America, and the Little Satan is Israel. He has written a screed called The Terror Enigma, that is a kind of Protocols of the Elders of Zion for the War on Terror. Raimondo?s tract ? it?s only a pamphlet issued by a vanity press ? insinuates, with no serious evidence, that the Israeli government had prior knowledge of 9/11 but failed to warn our authorities; that because an Israeli lived in the same neighborhood as a 9/11 conspirator they were naturally complicit; Israelis selling art on the streets of the U.S. were actually big-time spies engaged in undermining our government; that here, there, and everywhere, the omnipotent Israelis control everything, so why not the attack on the Twin Towers as well? The next step from this conspiracy logic is, of course, the claim that Israel was in on 9/11 with the Bush administration.

On October 29, 2004 Raimondo wrote a piece under the headline, ?Bush and Kerry put Israel first.? It claimed that, ?the Jewish state keeps an entire people captive in the twin concentration camps of Gaza and the West Bank;? and ?the Israelis love to torture and berate [Yasir Arafat] far too much to let him die a natural death.? Referring to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, he wrote, ?one needn?t refer to fiction when the relevant facts are so readily available.? (In other words, the Protocols may be fake, but they tell the truth.) According to Raimondo, ?Today, the word ?fascist? is the political equivalent of the ?f?-word, rendered virtually meaningless on account of its degeneration into pure epithet. Yet, Israel in its present trajectory fits the classic definition of fascism.? And: ?Israel, far from being our faithful ally, is potentially an enemy.?

Almost as intense as his hatred for the Jewish state is Raimondo?s loathing of democracy. Some may have been taken aback by the volume of his bile when he denounced the ?orange revolution? in Ukraine as well as the current democratizing efforts in Lebanon. But not those who have followed Raimondo?s prominent association with the Russian Jew-baiting website, Pravda.ru, and its American contributor, the neo-Nazi Bill White.

Bill White has followed the predictable career of neo-Nazi agitators. He is a Jew-hater and a compulsive liar, frequently inventing ?facts? about those he targets. Posing as a ?libertarian socialist? with a site at www.overthrow.com, he recently distinguished himself by hailing the murder of the family of the judge in Chicago who had the temerity to order payment of a fine by a neo-Nazi leader. The Roanoke Times reported on March 3, ?As authorities investigate the killings of a federal judge?s family in Chicago, a Roanoke white supremacist on Wednesday applauded the murders as justified violence against Jews and the federal government. ?I don?t feel bad that Judge [Joan Humphrey] Lefkow?s family was murdered,? William A. White, editor of The Libertarian Socialist News, wrote in an essay Tuesday on his Web site, Overthrow.com. ?In fact, when I heard the story I laughed. ?Good for them!? was my first thought.??

While sorting out the love affair between antiwar.com and overthrow.com is akin to diving into a sewer, Dennis Raimondo and Bill White were eager contributors to the Pravda.ru site until the ?patriotic? admirers of both bridled at their association with a journalistic enterprise associated, in the mind of most Americans, with old-fashioned Communist propaganda. Articles by both Raimondo and White have been widely recirculated by the Saudi-funded Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). In the ?red-brown? logic, Jew-baiting works equally well for fascists, Communists, and Islamo-fascists.

Raimondo?s website consistently published propaganda generated by Randall (Ismail) Royer, a former CAIR employee now doing a 20-year federal sentence for terrorist activities. Recently, one of Royer?s associates, Ahmad Omar Abu Ali, was charged with plotting to assassinate President Bush in collaboration with al-Qaida. Before his arrest, Royer distinguished himself between with a campaign to harass and intimidate critics of the jihadists ? myself, and the Saudi dissident Ali al-Ahmed among them ? in the Washington region. Raimondo gleefully recycled Royer?s Jew-baiting rants on his website. CAIR, which employed Royer, joined in the campaign by redistributing the Raimondo screeds. CAIR ? which pretends to be an anti-defamation organization ? also disseminates the neo-Nazi propaganda of Bill White.

CAIR poses as a civil liberties advocate, Raimondo poses as ?antiwar,? White poses as a ?libertarian socialist,? and their comrade-in-arms Kevin Keating poses as a ?revolutionary.? The technique is familiar to any history student: the Nazi party called itself the socialist party of the German workers, while plotting to suppress the labor movement and enslave wage-earners.

The law recognizes that some conspiracies are real: one such is the common effort of Raimondo, CAIR, Royer, Abu Ali, White, Keating, and others to silence the critics of Islamist extremism and intimidate the supporters of America?s leadership in the global war on terror. Of that leadership, Raimondo has written, ?Go F*ck Yourself, Mr. President.? (November 26, 2003).

Raimondo has taken on the role of a pre-1941 Axis agent in America, lashing the Jews, giving comfort to the country?s worst enemies, defaming the president, and, in general, seeking to undermine faith in democracy. He also craves martyrdom, and dreams that he will be arrested and tried for sedition the way some of his heroes were. He is so reckless in his provocations that he may some day get his wish. Raimondo is a prophet of disintegration and ruin. Whether he achieves his martyrdom or not, he has certainly earned a minor footnote in the history of ?extraordinary popular delusions.? If, as he claims, a ?specter of fascism? is present in America today, Raimondo can best locate it with a mirror.

1. Don't call it 'racism'

In 1977 Israel's criminal code was changed. Section 144A made "racism" a
crime. Racism was defined as "persecution, humiliation, demeaning,
displaying animosity, hostility, violence or strife toward a population
group or parts of such a group, all on the basis of skin color or
membership in a racial or ethnic-national grouping."

At first glance, this law seems innocuous enough. After all, who can be in
favor of racism or against attempts to eliminate it?

But the main problems in this law quickly become clear. First, the law
criminalizes some expressions of speech, and so infringes free speech.
Second, the definition of "racism" in the law is so vague as to render the
entire law arbitrary and useless. Third, in its implementation and
enforcement the law has already been used in an arbitrary and
anti-democratic manner for partisan purposes.

The law has become a bludgeon to suppress free speech selectively, used
against some right-wing Israeli Jews. At the same time there has never
been any attempt to prosecute Arabs nor left-wing Jewish extremists under
the same law.

The immediate motivation for the framers of Israel's law was the
activities of followers of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane. The law's purpose
was to suppress the freedom of speech of these Kahanists and of some other
fringe groups among Israeli Jews.

But prosecuting Kahanists for "racism" is inconsistent and arbitrary.

Most of the problems with the anti-racism law became clear soon after it
was passed by the Knesset. One of the first cases prosecuted under the law
was the State of Israel v. Rabbi Ido Elba (Docket 2831/95).

Elba had published an article arguing that in the Torah there are separate
rabbinic laws applying to killing Jews, covered in the part of the Ten
Commandments prohibiting "murder," and the killing of Canaanite non-Jews
living among Jews, which was prohibited under a separate law given to all
humans descending from Noah. The article was a scholarly exercise in
explaining rabbinic laws and especially the commentary on manslaughter by
Maimonides.

But the publication came out shortly after the massacre of Arabs in Hebron
by Baruch Goldstein, and the public and some politicians were looking for
a target to prosecute for anti-Arab racism. In April 1995, Elba was
convicted under the anti-racism law and sentenced to four years'
imprisonment (two of them being a suspended sentence). The Supreme Court
upheld the conviction and the sentence the following year.

The vagueness of the anti-racism law is extremely problematic. The law's
language was so poorly formulated and thought through that it would make
statements like "I do not want to date non-Jews," or "I do not like blond
women" crimes. Should reading certain passages in the Bible be prohibited
because they offend some modern ears?

The law explicitly makes advocating discrimination against a demographic
group to be racism. But Israel is full of groups advocating discrimination
against Jews as part of affirmative action preferences, and, of course,
also discrimination against males. Not a single person has ever been
prosecuted in Israel for this. Why not?

Racism is, after all, a belief or a feeling, albeit an evil one, but a
private one. Do we really want a Racism Patrol inspecting bars and poker
games, hunting down individuals making racist statements in chat rooms or
in salons?

The anti-racism law is not merely an assault against free speech, but
arguably the most ludicrous law Israel has on its books. A Kahanist was
indicted and convicted of racism for selling T-shirts printed with the
words "Where there are no Arabs there is no terrorism." Another is under
investigation for selling an anti-disengagement-plan board game.

In contrast, no racism by Arabs has been prosecuted. Nor has bigotry by
politicians such as Shinui's Tommy Lapid, whose entire party agenda is
based on anti-haredi bigotry. When communist Sami Michael, a prominent
writer and a leader of the Association of Civil Rights in Israel, made
comments which struck me as justifying Hamas's mass murders of Jews, he
was not prosecuted as a racist. No Arab political parties . regardless of
how outrageous their statements are . have been banned or prosecuted under
the anti-racism law. Neither have Israeli professors, artists or
intellectuals endorsing and justifying Arab terrorism against Jews, or
declaring that Jews are not entitled to any form of self-determination.

Free speech is alive in Israel, but wounded and threatened as the internal
political divisions in Israel deepen. Besides the prosecution of those
utilizing free speech and saying things of which the political
establishment disapproves, there are growing, open threats from the
government to use the police, intelligence services and preventive
detention without trial to bully opponents of government policy into
silence. The very fact that assaults against free speech for "racists" are
so popular in Israel, especially among the chattering classes, illustrates
how shallow, conditional and dubious is the commitment by so many in
Israel to democracy.

Old Juan Cole Is a Very Sad Soul

Since November 2004, University of Michigan professor Juan Cole has served as the "Rais" (the Palestinian term for head of state) of the Middle East Studies Association. MESA is far less an academic organization for scholars than it is an anti-America and anti-Israel advocacy group, operating a nonstop jihad against Bush's war against terrorism. A professor of Modern Middle Eastern and South Asian History, Cole has been named one of the eight most biased professors in America.

Cole, who led the lobby to clear Saddam of any ties with terrorism, believes that a group of Jewish ?neo-conservatives? largely runs U.S. policy toward the Middle East. His recurrent theory is that a nebulous ?pro-Likud? cabal controls the U.S. government from a small number of key positions in the Executive Branch. Jonathan Calt Harris has declared: "He (Cole) is blindly anti-Israel to the point of being an anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist, an apologist for radical Islam, and someone who despises American public opinion."

Some of Cole's most outrageous statements include:

?Much of the Arab world has a formal peace treaty with Israel.? (Actually only Egypt and Jordan have, and the former is observed by Egypt mainly in its non-compliance.)

?Chemical weapons are not weapons of mass destruction.?

?Saddam Hussein never gave any real support to the Palestinian cause, and he did not pay suicide bombers to blow themselves up.?

?Supporting orphans is, in any case, not the same as funding terrorism." (Cole is referring to subsidies to the families of suicide bombers by Saddam, the Saudis, and others. Of course there is nothing wrong with the PLO making Jewish children orphans in Old Juan Cole?s eyes.)

Cole has also pushed the Israel divestment campaign by campus anti-Semites, supposedly because Arabs are "mistreated" by Israel. Never mind that Arabs in Israel are treated a thousand times better than are Arabs in Arab countries.

Of course, Cole?s so-called passion for speaking out against human rights abuses in underdeveloped countries is rather one sided. Concerning the atrocities and massacres in Darfur, Cole has blamed it on the U.S. and the U.K., claiming the Iraq War ook attention away from Sudan. Imaginary mistreatment of Arabs by Israel upsets Cole, while mass murder of hundreds of thousands of Christians and Black Muslims by Sudanese Arabs is not worth a Michigan yawn. And Cole has been notably quiet about the 200,000 people massacred in Algeria. Maybe he could not figure away to blame the Jews or the neocons for those. Needless to say, Cole has never called for divestment from Syria until it frees Lebanon, nor from Iran or any other anti-American regime for which tenured extremists feel enlightened affection.

A while back Cole crayoned a piece in which he complained that the media are ignoring America's "historians of Iraq" ? people who "know about the country in its historical context.? He is referring, of course, to the academic members of MESA, who by and large hold the same opinions as Cole. Middle East Scholar Martin Kramer has shown that the dearth of real scholarship on Saddam's Iraq was due to pressure from the pro-Arab MESA professors to treat Saddam with kid gloves. Cole has endorsed conspiracy theories concerning the CIA about which one ordinarily has to go to neonazi web sites like RENSE to read. IraqPundit called Cole "dependably misinformed" and poked fun at him and his insane conspiracy theories, mentioning how some Iraqis refer to Cole's site as "Misinformed Comment," a play on the title of his web page "Informed Comment."

The Bay2beirut weblog writes:

"So what does Cole do? What he does best. Weave conspiracy theories that of course involve the Neocons (see that second link to IraqPundit for another one of those) on how Iraq The Model is 'suspicious' and how 'far out of the mainstream of Iraqi opinion' the posters are. Yes you heard right. An Iraqi site, whose authors have formed a pro-democracy liberal Iraqi party, based in Iraq, living through the war and its dangers (esp. when Cole's favorite, Sadr, was bullying other Iraqis and when Jihadists are killing anyone pro-American, while Cole is sitting pontificating from his Michigan office) is not reflective of Iraqi opinion, which Juan Cole is supposedly an expert on! The pretentious self-importance is nauseating.

"But there's more. This amounts to the worst 'Orientalism' (in the Saidian sense) there is. It presumes that Iraqi opinion must not only be monolithic, but it must also conform to an anti-US, pro-Arabist party line (because Arabism is the 'authentic' voice of the East)! Or, it must be what Juan Cole says it is! If not, it's an attempt 'to spread disinformation ... It is a technique made for the well-funded Neoconservatives,' i.e., not only must 'Arabs' have one opinion, but if they are dissenters then they are passive agents of manipulation by outside (Jewish) forces! (Iraq the Model was quoted by Wolfowitz a while ago in a WSJ op-ed. Well that 'proves' they're Neocons!)"

Another weblog operated by pro-democracy Iraqis, IraqtheModel, writes:

"I came across this article by Dr Juan Cole that made me feel ashamed of myself. This man who doesn?t live in Iraq seems to know more about the history of Iraq than I do. In his article he was criticizing the westerns, journalists in particular, for making judgments without knowing much about Iraq?s history, which I must admit is true..... What Dr. Cole was trying to tell us, as you can see in his article, is that Fallujah is celebrated in Iraq?s history as a symbol for the large rebellion/revolution against the British back in 1920."

The blogger then notes that no such incident ever took place. Fallujah was under the control of the British army the whole time.

Cole ponticiates a lot about "democracy." So what exactly is Cole's idea of Middle East democracy? Not Israel of course. It is Syria, where 99.75 percent of the citizens ?voted? for the dictator in power. Syria?s elections are even better exercises in democracy than American presidential ballots, according to Cole.

In a New York Times editorial, Cole said that he saw the elections in Syria as a model for other Arab countries to follow. ?The last thing the Arab people need is a red herring like ?free and open elections? to distract them from the international Zionist/Neo-Con conspiracy to take their oil.? Professor Cole then added that President Assad?s ability to gain such a high percentage of the vote ?all the while maintaining an oligarchic cult of personality oppressive regime mired in nepotism and corruption? was ?truly impressive? and a positive sign of ?Arab solidarity.?

Cole was one of the people spreading around anti-Semitic blood libels about Israel before the invasion of Iraq, claiming that Israel was going to commit atrocities and mass murders against Palestinians as soon as the Allies landed in Iraq. He once wrote that Larry Franklin had "a Brooklyn accent" even though "he himself was not Jewish." Nevertheless he was close to Wolfowitz and "the predominantly Jewish Neoconservatives" and thus he was part of "a clever scheme." Cole also cast suspicions on Sephardic Jews for possibly being infiltrated by the Mossad.

Cole responds to criticism of his fanaticism and doubts about his scholarship by groups like Campus Watch or individuals like Martin Kramer, with ad hominem shrieks, threats, and insults. He routinely sends letters to people like Daniel Pipes and Martin Kramer, threatening to sue them criticizing Cole's writings and statements. He sees Jewish cabals manipulating the Pentagon and other organs of power, including when Arabs whom he dislikes are involved. He has written: "The FBI should investigate how Phares, an undistinguished (Arab) academic with links to far rightwing Lebanese groups and the Likud clique, became the 'terrorism analyst' at MSNBC."

Andrew Sullivan, who is not Jewish, thinks Cole is an anti-American crackpot. He adds: "If you ask me, that's why the far-left Middle East academic elite has had so little influence over this debate. Their shrillness crowds out their expertise."

Cole himself was targeted by the Middle East Media Research Institute, which threatened to sue him for lies he published about MEMRI's finances?claims which, according to MEMRI's president Yigal Carmon, were factually untrue. Cole claimed that MEMRI was funded "to the tune of $60 million a year" (an absurd figure), that MEMRI is biased, and that it is somehow linked to the Likud party. MEMRI demanded a retraction on all three points, and threatened Cole with possible legal action if he fails to do so.

Lately scholar Cole has turned to historic revisionism and simple misrepresentation to serve his political agenda when it comes to Lebanon. He tells his readers (yes, he has more than one reader) that, first, "The Israelis expelled 100,000 or so Palestinians north to Lebanon in 1948." (Expelled? Maybe these were people who lost their war to annihilate Israel and fled at the orders of the Arab militia commanders?) Then, "The prospect of a PLO-dominated Lebanon scared the Syrians. Yasser Arafat would have been able to provoke battles with Israel at will, into which Syria might be drawn. Hafez al-Asad determined to intervene to stop it. First he sought a green light from the Israelis through Kissinger. He got it." The Syrians were hardly upset about the prospect of PLO power in Syria, which they had long promoted and built up. Some of the PLO's component organizations had their offices in Damascus. Kissinger did not invite the Syrians to annex Lebanon and the civil war wa
s only
the pretext for Asa to pursue his imperial ambitions regarding Lebanon.

Then Cole adds, "In 1982 the Israelis mounted an unprovoked invasion of Lebanon as Ariel Sharon sought to destroy the remnants of the weakened PLO in Beirut." [Unprovoked apparently means that terrorists operating against Israel freely in Lebanon, firing missiles and rockets and mortars, only killed Jewish Untermenschen and so these murders and aggressions should not count.]

Now in reality, the Syrian gobbling up of Lebanon was part of Syria's official doctrine of "Greater Syria," which holds that all of Israel and Jordan and Lebanon rightfully belong to Syria and are simply under temporary alien control. Syrian maps often portray all of Israel and Lebanon as southern Syria. Guess the learned Cole never heard about that doctrine. Just like he routinely refers to the "policies and decisions of Tel Aviv". Seems he has never discovered that Jerusalem is where Israel's capital and government sit. Tel Aviv is where you can go to the beach.

But Old Juan Cole's biggest fear these days is that President Bush might get some of the credit for Syria's sudden pusillanimous behavior. Cole writes, "I don't think Bush had anything much to do with the current Lebanese national movement except at the margins." Gosh, we would not want anyone to credit Bush's removals of the Taliban and of the Ba'athists in Iraq to be getting any credit.

It is very common among leftwing extremists to find that their entire world view is based on reversing causes and effects. You know, kind of how Hiroshima was the cause of Pearl Harbor. Comrade Cole seems to have based much of his "academic" career on such inversions. Consider his diatribe on the History News network, "Want to End Terrorism? End Foreign Occupations." This is a classic in the genre. It claims that Iraqi terrorism is a byproduct of Allied "occupation" of Iraq, and also of course that Palestinian terrorism is a byproduct of Israel's occupation of "Palestinian lands".

Here is Cole at his most vociferous and least scholarly:

"You want to end terrorism? End unjust military occupations. By all means have Syria conduct an orderly withdrawal from Lebanon if that is what the Lebanese public wants. But Israel needs to withdraw from the Golan Heights, which belong to Syria, as well. The Israeli military occupation of Gaza and the West Bank must be ended."

Now Palestinian anti-Jewish terrorism actually began in the 1920s, back when "Palestine" was governed by the British, under a League of Nations Mandate, after Britain freed it from its Turkish colonial rulers. Palestinian anti-civilian atrocities escalated in the 1950s, conducted by "fedayeen" terrorists sponsored by Egypt and other Arab fascist regimes. Let us emphasize that all of this was many years before the Six Day War of 1967. In other words, neither Gaza nor the West Bank were "occupied" by Israel when Palestinian terrorism developed and escalated. Instead, they were occupied by Egypt and Jordan (the latter illegally holding the West Bank). Egypt and Jordan could have set up a Palestinian state on the West Bank and Gaza Strip had they wished to, any time between 1949 and 1967, without the need even to ask Israel what it thought.

Cole likes to denounce Israel for its "land grab". Let us note that this is the same Israel that is the size of Massachusetts and whose land in total is far less than 1% of the land controlled by the 22 Arab states. This is the same Cole who refers to Tel Aviv as the capital of Israel, while the suburbs around the actual capital, Jerusalem, are "illicit land grabs". As far as we know, Cole has never denounced Ann Arbor as an illicit grab of Indian lands nor offered to restore his own real property there to those Native tribes from whom he grabbed it.

Cole routinely refers to Middle East terrorists as "guerillas". He defends Hizbollah thus:

"It (Hizbollah) cannot simply be ignored or dismissed as a terrorist organization. Hizbullah isn't that different from the Dawa Party or the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq, which the US just helped to power in Iraq."

Cole's rantings sometimes remind us of the logic one finds on neonazi web magazines. Here is Cole again: "When Ariel Sharon sends American-made helicopter gunships and F-16s to fire missiles into civilian residences or crowds in steets, as he has done more than once, then he makes the United States complicit in his war crimes and makes the United States hated among friends of the Palestinians. And this aggression and disregard of Arab life on the part of the proto-fascist Israeli Right has gotten more than one American killed, including American soldiers." Once again, Cole is reversing cause and effect. He absolutely refuses to consider the possibility that Israel's gunships were operating because the PLO was sheltering, sponsoring and assisting suicide bombers to conduct mass murders of Israeli civilians, many of them childfren.

In Cole's view, these choppers were just shooting for absolutely no reason, just because the "proto fascists" in Israel, who were not elected the same way Cole's democratic Assads were, felt like it, maybe were having a bad hair day. It never occurs to Cole that, had the PLO complied with its Oslo obligations and prevented terror attacks on Israel, no Israeli choppers would be targeting Palestinian terror leaders at all, and no Palestinian civilians would get hurt in the fire.

In the same article, Cole cites as his scholarly source Uri Avnery, who in fact is an Israeli cross between Larry Flint and Lord Haw Haw, an anti-Israel street protesters with no academic credentials, which is why Alexander Cockburn also uses him. Perhaps the University of Michigan's Department of Middle East Studies should be renamed the Department of Duh.

Now if we were to test the Cole Doctrine on history, it fails. US occupation of Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, Diego Garcia, and Samoa have never produced terror. Soviet occupation of the Baltics and Siberia did not either. Romanian occupation of Transylvania has not. Italian occupation of Sardinia has not. Spain's occupation of enclaves on the North Moroccan coast has not. Nor has China's occupation of its Moslem colonies and Tibet. Nor Turkey's "occupation" of Syria's Alexandretta region.

On the other hand, there are lots of examples of terrorism arising where there is no occupation. The Moslem terror against Malaysia, Thailand, and Algeria, the Bader-Meinhof gang, the Weathermen, the Hizbollah terror against Israel AFTER it fully withdrew from Lebanese soil, the Michigan militia that bombed Oklahoma City, all these are examples of terror in spite of the absence of occupation.

Cole is incapable of placing any "occupation" in historic context, nor of asking what produces occupation. In fact, Israel's "occupation" of the West Bank and Gaza (which are more "Jewish Lands" than they ever were "Palestinian", in any case) was a consequence of Arab terror and aggression against Israel, not their cause. The Arabs attacked Israel in 1967 when it was not occupying anything except Israel. (Why will be excused if we suspect that Cole regards Tel Aviv and Haifa as illicit occupations of Palestinian lands as well.)

The West Bank and Gaza were "occupied" in Israel's counterattack against aggression. The Golan Heights had belonged to Syria before 1967, although its claims to it were dubious even back then; the only use the Syrians made of the Golan Heights was to bombard Israeli civilians in the Galilee. Israel's annexation of the Golan after the war is also one of those "occupations" that Abu Cole thinks must be ended.

Cole says, "People need a sense of autonomy and dignity, and occupation produces helplessness and humiliation. Humiliation is what causes terrorism." Actually occupation is a consequence of fascist aggression, not its cause. The American occupation of Germany and Japan was just like the Israeli "occupation" of "Palestinians". The difference is that the Germans and Japanese underwent denazification. So terror is in fact the consequence of an absence of denazification. Humiliation prevents terrorism. Ask the Germans and the Japanese.

Cole has consistently opposed any form of anti-terrorist campaign by the US, other than capitulation to terrorist demands. He denied Saddam had any terror connections at all: " The idea that Iraq is deliberately harboring Islamist terrorists is absurd, since the Baathists would be afraid of them themselves."

Here is the Cole take on bin Laden and 9-11, taken from the pro-al-Qaeda "antiwar.com" web site:

"The attack on the World Trade Center was exactly analogous to Pearl Harbor. The Japanese generals had to neutralize the U.S. fleet so that they could sweep into Southeast Asia and appropriate Indonesian petroleum.... Likewise, al-Qaeda was attempting to push the United States out of the Middle East so that Egypt, Jordan, Israel and Saudi Arabia would become more vulnerable to overthrow, lacking a superpower patron. Secondarily, the attack was conceived as revenge on the United States and American Jews for supporting Israel and the severe oppression of the Palestinians.... Ironically, however, the Bush administration then went on to invade Iraq for no good reason."

He then adds: "Al-Qaeda has succeeded in several of its main goals. It had been trying to convince Muslims that the United States wanted to invade Muslim lands, humiliate Muslim men, and rape Muslim women. Most Muslims found this charge hard to accept. The Bush administration's Iraq invasion, along with the Abu Ghraib prison torture scandal, was perceived by many Muslims to validate bin Laden's wisdom and foresight.... The U.S. is not winning the war on terror. Al-Qaeda also has by no means won. But across a whole range of objectives, al-Qaeda has accomplished more of its goals than the U.S. has of its."

Cole's atrociously-written rants are not simply the proliferation of shallow and whacky ideas about the Middle East. Cole is a horrendous writer in general, who can barely construct a proper sentence, and sometimes spouts juvenile nonsense about other things besides the Middle East. Consider the following:

"Before the rise of the neocons in the 1970s, it was well understood by minority communities in the United States that they had to work against bigotry in general. Because if an atmosphere was created or allowed to persist that allowed one minority group to be targeted, it had the potential to boomerang on the others, as well. Racialist hatred is no respecter (sic) of persons. Now I perceive a cockiness among some minorities in the U.S., such that they--former victims of discrimination--advocate
racial profiling and discrimination, even demonization, for some. I solemnly predict that if they continue on this path, they will eventually come deeply to regret it, as shall we all."

Cole recently went ballistic in response to comments by Fred Ikle in the Wall Street Journal, who wrote:

"Those who out of cowardice use their wealth to pay danegeld to the preachers of hate and destruction must be taught that this aggression will boomerang. A nuclear war stirred up against the 'infidels' might end up displacing Mecca and Medina with two large radioactive craters."

Cole denounced Ikle as "racist, ignorant and monstrous. Why aren't Paul Gigot and James Taranto forced to resign over this monstrosity?" My guess is that Ikle can correctly name the capital of Israel, unlike Cole. Moslem atrocities are not racist and monstrous, in Cole's opinion. He writes, " What is the difference between talking about nuking Mecca for political purposes and Mulla Omar's destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan, which was rightly denounced as barbaric? The difference is that no human beings were vaporized at Bamiyan." In other words, non-nuclear atrocities just do not count. Why isn't Cole fired by U-M because of his anti-Semitism?

To sum things up, the entire thesis concerning "occupation" and terror by the learned Cole is a pile of crock. Cole is incapable of going beyond his bumper-stick-depth methodology of analysis by slogan. After all, if the Russian occupation of Afghanistan triggered terror, as did Indian "occupation" of Kashmir, this must mean that Middle East terror is a desperate act of protest against US and Israeli occupiers and helicopters.

I have long believed that anti-Israel and anti-American MESA profs should be called gnats. That would make our Juan the Gnat-King Cole! Cole's claims to being an expert on the Middle East are about as persuasive as Ward Churchill's claims to being an Indian chief.

2. A New anti-Terror SDS
Those of us old enough to have prostate problems surely remember the old
anti-American extremist group from the 60s calling itself the "SDS =
Students for a Democratic Society." That SDS wanted democracy of the sort
to be found in the Democratic Republic of East Germany.

Anyway, now there is a new SDS worth noting, the Suspect Detection
Systems. It is an Israeli high-tech startup that just signed a contract
with US Transportation Security Administration, which is responsible for
airport security. SDS produces a portable polygraph that can detect
terrorists even when they are not carrying anything made of metal. A
demonstration project is being implemented at a New Jersey airport.
Passengers place their hands on a detector and tell a truth or a fib.

We expect the ACLU and other graduates of the OLD SDS to be up in arms at
this infringement of the constitutional right to lie. Heck, who knows
where use of the device could lead - maybe even to racial profiling!

SDS employs 12 people in a town outside Tel Aviv.

1. Ordinarily Weizmann Institute is not the main target on our radar
screen for political correctness and suppression of academic freedom. It is
usually the least politicized of Israel's academic institutions and has
the smallest number of leftist faculty moonbats (even fewer than Bar Ilan
University). But today's headline is an exception.

party lawyer who often represents Arab murderers and terrorists. She and

San Francisco announced today that they have identified the gene
responsible for liberalism in humans. The discovery is being hailed as a
major breakthrough.

Scientists determined that this particular gene causes the brain to

the brain to interpret factual data and make logical conclusions based on
reason. The gene also has the odd effect of stimulating urine production
and causing more bed wetting than for people who do not carry the gene.

"We need to do further testing, but it appears me may now have the ability
to develop treatments for people who are born with a pre-disposition for
liberalism," said Ike Kahn of UCSF. "We still have a lot of work to do.
There is minimal understanding of how some people who have the gene are
able to overcome liberalism while others are not. We also know it is a
recessive gene, but we don't know if it was passed from the mother or the
father or both. The gene appears to be most common in Europeans,
particularly French. We hope to have a test developed for the genetic
marker soon, so people can know if they are a carrier and risk passing the
gene on to their children. For the time being, we are recommending that
no one have sex with a French person."

1. Islamofascism and Star Trek Conspiracy Fantasies
One reason it is impossible to make peace with Islamic fascists is that
they all live in some parallel universe detached from reality in which
Palestinians are oppressed by Israel and where conspiracies abound. And
the Left inevitably backs them up in their conspiracist nonsense.

Attallah Quiba, the Palestinian ambassador in Sri Lanka, believes that
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was killed by unnamed Israelis using
advanced technology, the Island newspaper said. Responding to questions at
a media conference in Colombo on Friday, Quiba claimed that two Israelis
who met Arafat on the day he was taken sick "used a laser device to attack
Arafat."

"They tried to flee after using the device but were wrestled down by the
Palestinian Authority security personnel. Both men were carrying Canadian
passports. "Quiba was quoted as saying the Palestinian Authority
immediately informed the Israeli government of the "attempt on Arafat's
life."

Now we really do not see how this is any sillier than the anti-Semitic
conspiracy "theories" endorsed by Alexander Cockburn, editor and publisher
of Counterpunch, about how Jews spread anthrax and how the Israelis
knocked down the World Trade Center to make poor bin Laden look bad.
Cockburn often endorses Islamofascist conspiracy theories. Here is a

raised discussion of Israel and of the posture of American Jews to an
acrid level. The purveyor of anthrax may have been a former government

according to the AP. Finally, there.s Sharon.s bloody repression of the
Palestinians, and Israel.s apparently powerful role in Bush.s foreign
policy."

3. NOT a Purim spoof! Yesterday at the Likud party caucus, Ariel Sharon
harangued the Likud leaders to reject the idea of a national referendum on
his "disengagement" plan for Gaza, claiming it was dangerous and
undemocratic. When challenged to explain why it was dangerous and
democratic, he replied, "No one knows to what it could lead. It could lead
to ELECTIONS."

So now we understand. Undemocratic things are those that lead to
elections.

The Likud forced a decision in favor of a national referndum at the
caucus meeting. But have no fear - Sharon will no more honor this than he
did the party referendum last year. Sharon does not want a national
referendum because he knows his "plan" would lose.

4. Depaul University Swapping the Cross for the Swastika?
Depaul University is a large, if not particularly renowned academically,
Catholic college in Chicago. Until recently the main cause of controversy
surrounding Depaul was its insistence on employing notorious anti-Semite
Norman Finkelstein as an assistant professor in its political science. But
recently Depaul took a giant step in implementing Orwellism and
anti-democratic suppression of political incorrectness on its campus.

The immediate target of Depaul's campaign against political incorrectness
was Thomas Klocek, a part-time adjunct professor at DePaul University's
so-called "School for New Learning". ("New learning" evidently is not
something Depaul confuses with learning, as the events there show.)
Klocek's crime? He was guilty of expressing support for Israel. Evidently
Holocaust Denial is ok at Depaul, but not expressing support for Israel.

After 14 years of continuous employment at the Chicago-based college,
Klocek was suspended with pay last September, and then stayed suspended -
this time without pay - through the winter quarter. Klocek is guilty of
nothing more than expressing pro-Israel views in the face of extremist
Palestinian propaganda on Depaul's campus, including students and
non-students proliferating the usual lies and canards about Israel and
Rachel Corrie. Klocek's courses have ranged from Critical Thinking to
College Writing to Languages and Cultures of the World. By all accounts,
he was a popular teacher and his classes were always full.

Despite having an unblemished record during that span, DePaul summarily
dismissed him from his duties after the school learned that he had
.insulted. and .demeaned. several Muslim students at a campus fair for
extracurricular groups. Klocek had publicly expressed his belief that,
"strictly speaking, right now there is no such place as Palestine on the
map. The Palestinian people were simply Arabs who lived in the West Bank
and Gaza." We seem to recall that Galileo was also persecuted by Church
institutions for daring to tell the truth! Klocek, by the way, is Roman
Catholic.

With no current income and facing the possibility of losing the health
insurance he desperately needs for a serious kidney condition, Klocek, the
21st century Galileo of Depaul, decided to go public with his fight. The
Chicago Jewish news runs a large expose of Depaul's auto da fe against
Klocek this week. The university contends that Klocek's case "is not a
case of academic freedom but a situation of inappropriate behavior outside
the classroom by a university employee," according to Mattson, the
university spokesperson. Yeah, right, while another Depaul professor has
made a career out of promoting and cheering Holocaust Deniers and serving
as the darling of neonazi web sites!! HIS "behavior" does not disturb the
Depaul Inquisitors.

Large numbers of bloggers have come out in favor of Klocek and against his
Inquisitors from Depaul. The university itself has been forced to
acknowledge the growing outrage over its conduct.

Depaul's sudden horror at the supposed "unprofessorial behavior" by Klocek
(they allege he made an impolite hand gesture to Muslim students who had
been calling him names) stands in sharp contrast with the university's
record regarding Norman Finkelstein, the most openly anti-Semitic Jew on
the planet. Depaul employs Finkelstein as an assistant professor in
political science, this after Finkelstein got fired from two NY area
adjunct teaching jobs (at NYU and Hunter College) because of his
pseudo-scholarship and fraudulent rantings against Jews and Israel.

Finkelstein is a disciple of Holocaust Denier David Irving and claims
Irving is an authoritative historian. Finkelstein refers to the six
million Jews murdered by the Nazis as the "Six Million" in quotation marks
and says that nearly every Holocaust survivor is a fraud and a thief and a
liar. (Finkelstein's own parents are Holocaust survivors, and Finkelstein
has long tried to capitalize on this as a way to legitimize his own
anti-Semitism. The psychiatry department at Depaul might have interesting
things to say about this.)

Can Israel use US equipment to violate Israeli residents' human rights?

This week, at Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon, in southern Israel, the Israel
Defence Forces will conduct an exercise to conduct a "dry run" to practice
bringing dead and wounded Jewish Israeli residents to the hospital,
following the summer plans of the Israeli government to forcibly remove all
8,000 Jewish men, women and children from their 21 farming communities in
the Jewish communities of the Katif district in Gaza and another 2000 Jews
from 4 communities in Northern Samaria.

A senior official in Israeli intelligence estimates that at least 100
Jewish residents will be killed in the expulsion process, since these
residents have no intention of leaving their homes and farms voluntarily,
and since the IDF has every intention of using live ammunition to
facilitate the expulsion of Jews from Katif and the Northern Samaria, while
razing their houses, farms and synagogues.

In late February, at the closing press conference of the annual Israel
convention of the Conference of Major Jewish Organizations from North
America, a journalist asked Conference Chairman James Tisch how Jewish
Americans will react if the Israel Defence Forces use American-supplied law
enforcement equipment to kill Jewish Israelis. The journalist also asked
Tisch if it was legal to use US made law enforcement equipment in that process.

Tisch, who had just read out a statement of support from more than 50
Jewish American organizations in support of the current policies of the
Israeli government, was stunned by the question and said he would look into
the matter.

I do not know if Mr. Tisch looked into the matter. I did.

While walking the halls of the US Congress last week, I asked for and
received a copy of the US Foreign Assistance Act.

A congressional human rights policy specialist pointed to the relevant
section of the law, which restricts nations receiving foreign aid from the
US from using that aid to subjugate human rights and civil liberties.

That official pointed to Sect. 502B, which is the "Human Rights" amendment,
which was added to the US Foreign Assistance Act in 1979, to ensure that
any and all US foreign aid would not abrogate the fundamentals of human
rights and civil liberties.
She explained that this would mean that any equipment supplied by the US to
an aid recipient would come under the scrutiny of this "human rights"
amendment to US Foreign Assistance law.

Clause (a)(1) of the Human Rights amendment to the US Foreign Assistance
Act clearly states that " a principal goal of the foreign policy of the
United States shall be to promote the increased observance of
internationally recognized human rights by all countries ?no security
assistance may be provided to any country the government of which engages
in a consistent pattern of gross violations of internationally recognized
human rights?Assistance may not be provided? to a country the government of
which engages in a consistent pattern of gross violations of
internationally recognized human rights"

The law goes on to state that "The President is directed to formulate and
conduct international security assistance programs of the United States in
a manner which will promote and advance human rights and avoid
identification of the United States, through such programs, with
governments which deny to their people internationally recognized human
rights and fundamental freedoms, in violation of international law or in
contravention of the policy of the United States".

This law also mandates that "United States has taken to promote respect for
and observance of human rights in that country and discourage any practices
which are inimical to internationally recognized human rights, and publicly
or privately call attention to, and disassociate United States and any
security assistance provided for such country from, such practices". This
US law defines ''gross violations of internationally recognized human
rights'' includes ?flagrant denial of the right to life, liberty, or the
security of persons."

Prof. Eliav Schochetman, Hebrew Professor of Law Emeritus and Dean of the
Shaari Mishpat Law College, testified last month at the Israeli Knesset
Parlimentary Law Committee that the decision of the state of Israel to
demolish the homes and villages of 10,000 citizens, represents the kind of
human rights infraction that is described in the human rights amendment to
US Foreign Assistance Act.

It would violate the constraints of Israel's own "Basic Human Rights Law"
which oversees Israeli democratic institutions in matters of human rights
and civil liberties, in the same way that the US Bill of Rights ensures
that the US government can never trample on the human rights and civil
liberties of American citizens.

In his testimony, Schochetman noted that this Israeli government decision
represents a violation of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights,
to which all democratic governments are adherents. Schochetmen added that
Israel's decision to expel Jews from their homes, would represent a wanton
violation of basic human rights and civil liberties that are protected
under Israeli and international human rights law.

Prof. Schochetman cited clause 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, which mandates that it is illegal for sovereign governments to
expel their citizens and ethnic minorities from their homes, from their
private properties or from their farms.
Since the only group that Israel has slated for expulsion would be Jews, it
may be recalled that the government of Serbia was recently held liable for
international prosecution at the International High Court of Justice in the
Hague, under the charge of "ethnic cleansing", after leaders of Serbia
expelled an ethnic minority, solely because of their religion.

Schochetman also mentioned the clauses in the San Remo Treaty that was
ratified by the League of Nations and then by the United Nations which
provide international protection for Jews to purchase and dwell in the
"Jewish Homeland", defined as any land which lies anywhere east of the
Jordan River.

After Schochetman's testimony at the Knesset, Knesset Law Committee
chairman Michael Eitan could not find any other law professor who would
contradict Schochetman's assessment of the Israeli government's proposal to
destroy and exile 25 Jewish communities would indeed represents a mass
human rights violation.
Since the Israeli government intends to use US supplied law enforcement
equipment in its proposed expulsion, the question remains: Will the US
Congress and will the American people allow for the use of US supplied law
enforcement equipment in such a process?

This has now become an American issue. After all, there is a difference
between destroying the home of a terrorist and the intention to demolish 25
communities of law abiding citizens.

Now it is the turn of the American citizen to communicate with their
elected representatives in the US Congress.

Epilogue
I did ask the congressional human rights specialist if the human rights
amendment to the US Foreign Assistance Act would apply to Israel's
demolition of the homes of terrorists. Her answer: US human rights
officials have determined that this would not apply to such acts, since
terrorists would be viewed as combatants.

From the National Post, we learn that calling for Jewish civilians to be
murdered is protected academic speech in Canada, while reading the Bible

Dr. Mohamed Elmasry, a University of Waterloo professor and president of
the Canadian Islamic Congress, drew widespread public condemnation last
October for telling a television panel discussion that all Israelis over
the age of 18 should be targets for attacks by Palestinians because they
are all members of the country's army. The Egyptian-born professor has
said his comments were misunderstood. As you can see, there is a lot of
ambiguity in the statement. He also came under investigation by the
University of Waterloo, where he is a professor of computer engineering.
Elmasry himself in the past led a campaign to indict evangelist Jerry
Falwell for hate speech, and has campaigned to have Islamic religious law
enforced in Canada. He claims Moslems inside Canada are living "under
siege".

Police have decided not to charge a controversial Muslim leader under
Canada's hate-crime laws for suggesting on a television talk show last
fall that all adult Israelis are "legitimate targets" for Palestinian
terrorists. Last November, the university's dean of science decided the
professor's statements were "entirely unacceptable," but decided against
formal disciplinary action. The local Islamofascists and jihadniks are
pleased, while a true Moslem moderate condemned the "Doctor".

So if THIS is NOT hate speech in Canada, what is? Come now, grasshopper,
don't you know? The Bible has been declared hate speech inCanada. Really!
It says things about homosxuality that some PC profs may not like and it
says the lands of Israel belong to the Jews.

That bill, passed 59-11 by the Senate, adds sexual orientation as a
protected category in Canada's genocide and hate-crimes legislation, which
carries a penalty of up to five years in prison. The House of Commons
passed the bill in September, 141-110.

PROFESSOR SUSPENDED AFTER DEFENDING ISRAEL

Roger L. Simon tipped me to the outrageous story of DePaul University Professor Thomas Klocek, who has been suspended after a verbal altercation with Muslim student groups.

The Chicago Jewish News has an account of the confrontation; if this is accurate, professor Klocek is apparently guilty of nothing more than expressing pro-Israel views in the face of extremist Palestinian propaganda, including the ever-present canards about Rachel Corrie:

What happened, then, on the afternoon of Sept. 15 has been pieced together from accounts by Klocek, his attorney, John W. Mauck of the law firm Mauck & Baker, accounts from the school and from the DePaulia, the student newspaper, as well as from an e-mail account by Salma Nassar, president of the DePaul group Students for Justice in Palestine and one of the students who was involved in the incident. (Nassar did not respond to requests for an interview from Chicago Jewish News).

Here?s what all the parties agree on: The trouble began when Klocek stopped at a booth run by Students for Justice in Palestine and one next to it from UMMA (United Muslims Moving Ahead.) He picked up some literature from the SJP table and read a sheet depicting the death of Rachel Corrie, the American activist who was killed by an Israeli bulldozer when she tried to stop a house demolition in the West Bank town of Rafah.

The handout described Corrie as being ?murdered by Israeli bulldozer? and went on to state that she ?was deliberately ran (sic) over, twice, after a two-hour confrontation between the non-violent international activists and the Israeli armed forces.?

Klocek said he turned to the student staffing the SJP booth and said, ?You know, there?s more than one perspective on the Middle East conflict. You?re only presenting one side here.?

Students at the booth ?began to engage me in conversation,? he said. Klocek expressed his belief that ?strictly speaking, right now there is no such place as Palestine on the map. The Palestinian people were simply Arabs who lived in the West Bank and Gaza.?

One of the women at the table told him that she was a Palestinian, then, according to Klocek, ?she got up from the table and said, you know, the Palestinians are being treated by Israelis the same way Hitler treated the Jews.?

?I took umbrage,? Klocek said. ?I told her that was an absolutely scurrilous statement, an absolute lie. I said that I believe the Israeli armed forces have exercised very careful restraint in their responses to what has been almost daily suicide bombings. There is a big difference between (Israelis) targeting a terrorist and someone strapped with bombs going in to a cafe or a seder and blowing up people.?

Then, Klocek said, ?the UMMA people began to come over. It was eight against one. A very spirited conversation? ensued.

Klocek said that when he felt the discussion was generating more heat than light on both sides, he decided that neither side was going to convince the other and started to leave. When a student asked if he had any connection with the university, he told her who he was and what courses he taught.

As he walked away, Klocek said, ?students began coming after me, and I thumbed my chin at them. It?s an Italian New Jersey expression meaning, ?I?m finished,? ?I?m out of here.??

?Students for Justice in Palestine,? of course, has a wildly different story; and as usual, it involves ?racism:?

Nassar, the SJP president, described the event in an Oct. 4 e-mail she sent to a number of campus organizations as ?a racist encounter.? She wrote that when students ?responded to (Klocek) in a polite and professional manner ... he continued to make derogatory and racist comments,? including making comments about how all terror attacks have been committed by Muslims. (Klocek said that he was quoting Chicago Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg, who in turn was quoting Abdel Rahman Al-Rashed, the manager of an Arab news channel, who stated that ?It is a certain fact that not all Muslims are terrorists, but it is equally certain, and exceptionally painful, that almost all terrorists are Muslims.?)

Nassar went on to state that ?we tried engaging Professor Klocek in conversation but he kept interrupting us and did not allow us to answer any of his questions.? In addition, she wrote, ?he continuously referred to Palestinians as ?those people? and went on to say that Palestinians ?do not exist.??

She wrote that when Klocek was leaving, he ?made an obscene hand gesture (he flipped us off.)?

Nassar wrote that she and other students from SJP and UMMA immediately reported the incident to the dean of students and the dean of the School of New Learning, as well as to the advisors of their groups. ?Professor Klocek disrespected the student/professor relationship,? she wrote. ?It was completely inappropriate for him to approach students in an aggressive manner, his racist and ignorant comments about Muslims and Palestinians, and the profanity he used completely crossed the line.? (Klocek admits that he ?raised his voice? but denies using profanity.)

In an interview she gave to the DePaulia, the student newspaper, Nassar added that Klocek ?was very aggressive and angry and would go from one topic to another. Every time we tried to address a topic he?d get angry and switch.? She reiterated in the interview that his comments were ?inappropriate and offensive.?

And that was all it took for Dean Dumbleton to cave in:

Nine days after the incident, Klocek was called to the office of Susanne Dumbleton, dean of the School for New Learning. Dumbleton told him that she had received two letters, one each from SJP and UMMA, and that ?there were very serious charges against me from the students,? according to Klocek, who never saw the letters.

He said Dumbleton told him that she had met with the students and their faculty advisors from the two groups, and that they were ?hurt and crushed? by Klocek?s remarks. ?They said you used your title as a professor and your power over them to force them to accept your remarks as true. The dean said she agreed with them,? Klocek related. (Dumbleton did not respond to repeated requests for an interview with Chicago Jewish News.)

She then told Klocek he was suspended, with pay, for the remainder of the autumn quarter. She also advised him to stay off campus, which he did, and suggested that he not talk to the student newspaper, the DePaulia, Klocek said. (The school denies that the latter suggestion was ever made.)

4. NY JUDGE BANS HETEROSEXUAL MARRIAGE

New York City -- A day after ruling that New York City must allow
homosexual marriages, a state judge today declared traditional
heterosexual marriage unconstitutional.

"Homosexual marriage rests on the bedrock of judicial opinion," wrote
Justice Doris Ling-Cohan, "But heterosexual marriage finds justification
in little more than religious myth, antiquated tradition and a few
unconstitutional state and local laws. These are all hollow arguments when
compared with the firm foundation provided by a growing number of judges."

In a 57-page ruling, Judge Ling-Cohan ordered the state of New York to
"cease and desist issuing marriage licenses to counter-sex (man-woman)
couples and to dissolve all existing counter-sex marriages."

Barring an appeal, the ban takes effect in 30 days.

Evenin mates and big up fanks fo coming, and hear me now! Me and da

over Mistuh Blair. We search and we search. And, by Jackie Chan, we
finds one at last.

We sees dis mate carrying a big sign dat says "No War for Oil". I
asks him, "So what you tink we DO gotta fight a war for anyways, for erbal
remedy?." Chill out, he tell us. He is only there for the shag and
flange, for da chicks. See, he tell us, he really is workin for his squid
over in dis boozer. He took some time off to see if he can find him some
spunky bitch. Problem is, all da birds he sees they is feminists and doan

The myrmidons over at Counterpunch, led by Alexander Cockburn, have a new
cause and a new Enemy of the Week. The target of leftist wrath this week
is professor of history at Brown University Omer Bartov. His crime? Bartov
dared to criticize anti-Semite Norman Finkelstein. Cockburn runs a column
crayoned by one David Green, who savagely attacks Bartov for denouncing
the pseudo-scholar and crackpot Finkelstein.

Let us back up a little and explain. Norman Finkelstein is the darling of
every neonazi Holocaust Denial web site on earth. He is a pseudo-historian
who is a follower of Holocaust Denier David Irving, and regards Irving as
a great and authoritative scholar. Nominally Jewish, he is every
stormtrooper's dream, cheered by them as the "Jew who proves there was
never any Holocaust of Jews by Nazi Germany."

Finkelstein kept getting fired from his adjunct teaching jobs in New York,
and when he realized he could not get any job at a real university, he
took a gig at Depaul "University" in Chicago as an Assistant Professor. By
comparison with Depaul, Ward Churchill's University of Colorado maintains
the highest academic standards of hiring!

Anyway, there Finkelstein continues to produce his anti-Semitic diatribe,
which routinely get gobbled up by the world's neoniazis. Finkelstein
constantly denounces all Holocaust survivors as frauds, thieves and liars,
refers to the six million Jews murdered by Hitler as the "Six Million" in
quotation marks, and mass produces anti-Israel pro-terror propaganda from
his perch at Depaul. He has endlessly libeled Nobel Prize laureate and
Holocaust survior Elie Wiesel for many years. A couple of years ago he
tried to engage Alan Dershowitz in a battle of wits, except Finkelstein
was only half equipped. Dershowitz made wiener shnitzel out of him.
Finkelstein has been denounced as a neonazi, anti-Semite, or Holocaust

compared Finkelstein's scurrilous "book" about the "Holocaust Industry" to
the Czarist anti-Semitic forgery "Protocols of the Elders of Zion".
Cockburn's magazine has not yet reprinted the Protocols, although it has
produced an equally anti-Semitic book by Cockburn himself that is just as
full of ravings. and it openly endorse Finkelstein's ravings about a
"Holocaust Industry."

Bartov has given a series of lectures and published several articles
debunking the lunatic ravings of Finkelstein. And that seems to be what
has upset Herr Cockburn, who runs Green's pitdog attack against Bartov in
this weekend's Counterpunch. Green and Finkelstein belong on the same
plane that carried deported nazi Ernst Zundel back to their Fuhrer's
fatherland.

What really arouses the Counterpunch ire is this quote from Bartov:

"For one of the most frightening aspects of Hitler's book is not that he
said what he said at the time, but that much of what he said can be found
today in innumerable places: on Internet sites, propaganda brochures,
political speeches, protest placards, academic publications, religious
sermons, you name it. As long as it does not have Hitler's name attached
to it, this deranged discourse will be ignored or allowed to pass. The
voices that express these opinions do not belong to a single political or
ideological current, and they are much less easy to distinguish than in
the 1930s. They belong to the right and the left, to the religious and the
secular, to the West and the East, to the rabble and the leaders, to
terrorists and intellectuals, students and peasants, pacifists and
militants, expansionists and anti-globalization activists. The diplomacy
advocated by Hitler is no longer relevant, but his reason for it, his
'worldview,' is alive and kicking, and it may still kick us."

Green goes on to libel Alan Dershowitz and Elie Wiesel on the same page.

I have always suspected that Alexander Cockburn wakes up each morning,
gives himself a Heil with raised arm in the mirror, goosesteps to the
breakfast room, and then asks himself which act of outright anti-Semitism
he can perform today to outdo even yesterday's.

had 10,000 people show up. Except th epress always inflates the numbers

In other words, here we have a manifestation of the REAL reason Sharon

2. Equal Time for a Holocaust Denier

Deborah Lipstadt will not appear on C-SPAN, America's nonprofit cable
channel whose mission is "to provide public access to the political
process." The Emory University Holocaust scholar has a new book, "History
on Trial," and her upcoming lecture at Harvard was to be televised on the
public affairs outlet. The book is about a libel case brought against her
in Britain by David Irving, a Holocaust denier, trivializer, prevaricator
and, by ruling of the very court that heard his suit, "anti-Semitic and
racist." No matter. C-SPAN wanted Mr. Irving to "balance" Ms. Lipstadt.

The word balance was invoked repeatedly by C-SPAN producers who seemed
convinced that they had chosen the most noble of all journalistic causes:
fairness. "You know how important fairness and balance is at C-SPAN," the
network's Connie Doebele told me. "We work very, very hard at this. We ask
ourselves, 'Is there an opposing view of this?"'

As luck would have it, there was. To Ms. Lipstadt's statements about the
Holocaust, there was Mr. Irving's rebuttal that it never happened -- no
systematic killing of Jews, no Final Solution and, while many people died
at Auschwitz of disease and the occasional act of brutality, there were no
gas chambers there. "More women died on the back seat of Edward Kennedy's
car at Chappaquiddick than ever died in a gas chamber at Auschwitz," Mr.
Irving once said.

Ms. Lipstadt cited Mr. Irving in her 1993 book, "Denying the Holocaust."
Mr. Irving sued her for libel in Britain, where the book was also
published. Under Britain's libel laws, Ms. Lipstadt had to prove the truth
of what she wrote which, after a lengthy trial, she did in spades.

By dint of maniacal industry, Mr. Irving had turned himself into an
admired writer on Nazi Germany. He mined the archives for material which
it seemed others had overlooked. Increasingly his books gave a whiff of
anti-Semitism and admiration for Hitler. When Richard J. Evans, a
Cambridge University historian (and one of Ms. Lipstadt's expert
witnesses), carefully examined Mr. Irving's work, he found it a stew of
misrepresentations, falsifications and outright quackery. Mr. Irving was
authoritatively exposed: a propagandist hiding behind scholarly seeming
footnotes.

This is the man C-SPAN turned to for "balance." It told Ms. Lipstadt that
since it was going to air her lecture, it would air one of Mr. Irving's
too. On March 12, Mr. Irving spoke at the Landmark Diner in Atlanta.
C-SPAN was there, though Mr. Irving's advance warning that cameras would
be present apparently held down attendance. (His people apparently prefer
anonymity -- or, in the old days, sheets.) Ms. Lipstadt was effectively
being told that if she wanted to promote her book on C-SPAN (an important
venue) she would also have to promote Mr. Irving. If she was to get a TV
audience, then so would he.

For a book on the evils of slavery, would C-SPAN counter with someone who
thinks it was a benign institution? Why does it feel there is another side
to the Holocaust?

In the end, Ms. Lipstadt had to choose between promoting her book and
giving Mr. Irving equal status and a dream audience. On this one occasion
at least, Mr. Irving did what he could not do with his libel suit: He
silenced Ms. Lipstadt.

4. Abolish Tenure

To see where the balance of power lies in American academia, look no
further than the University of Colorado, where the Ward Churchill scandal
has claimed its first victim. No, not Mr. Churchill, the professor who
gained national notoriety for describing the victims of the World Trade
Center attack as "little Eichmanns" who basically deserved what they got.
He's stepped down as chairman of the ethnic studies department, but he's
still teaching classes and earning $94,242 a year, in spite of the
university's attempts to sack him.

It's the university president who's heading out the door. Elizabeth
Hoffman tendered her resignation on March 7 because of the Churchill
controversy and more familiar problems of hanky-panky in football
recruiting and excessive debauchery at student parties. Whatever Ms.
Hoffman's alleged failings, they are dwarfed by Mr. Churchill's.

Since the original controversy over his essay justifying the September 11
attack, a gobsmacking litany of accusations has been leveled against Mr.
Churchill. He has been accused of plagiarism, of falsely claiming Indian
ancestry and a Vietnam War combat record, of threatening faculty members
and punishing students who disagreed with him, of fabricating historical
evidence, and of getting tenure under suspicious circumstances (he lacks a
Ph.D.). If even a tenth of the allegations are true, Mr. Churchill
deserves to be thrown out on his ear - not for his pro-terrorist remarks
but for all his other transgressions.

Easier said than done.

Mr. Churchill and his professorial colleagues are beneficiaries of the
most ironclad protection for mountebanks, incompetents, and sluggards ever
devised. It's called tenure.

To fire a tenured professor requires a legal battle that can make the
Clinton impeachment seem like a small-claims dispute by comparison. Even
if there is clear evidence of wrongdoing, professors are entitled to
endless procedural safeguards against being fired. The University of
Colorado wanted to offer Mr. Churchill a generous financial settlement to
leave voluntarily, but that idea has been torpedoed by regents angry at
the idea of buying off this buffoon. An epic struggle looms in which Mr.
Churchill and his numerous faculty defenders will nail their colors to the
mast of "academic freedom."

One wonders whether so many savants would be rushing to defend Mr.
Churchill from supposed "McCarthyism" if he had tried to justify the
deaths not of the September 11 victims but of the victims of AIDS ("little
perverts"?) or the Holocaust ("little Shylocks"?). It's a safe bet that if
Mr. Churchill were a loony right-winger, rather than a loony left-winger,
his colleagues would be forming a lynch mob instead of a defense
committee.

Harvard offers a good illustration of how harshly transgressions against
liberal pieties are punished within academe. President Summers has been
censured by his own faculty after daring to suggest that innate
differences in ability, not discrimination, may explain why there are so
few prominent women in math and sciences. Only weeks of abject groveling
have prevented his ouster - so far - for the crime of committing free
thought in public.

The rigid ideological intolerance of American universities makes a mockery
of tenure's primary justification: It is supposed to allow scholars to
pursue their work without outside pressure. Professors like Mr. Churchill
are all too happy to take advantage of this freedom to mock off-campus
pieties. But few dare to disagree with the received wisdom of the faculty
club, where the political spectrum runs all the way from left to far-left.

The primary practical effect of tenure is to make universities almost
ungovernable. Those ostensibly in charge - presidents and trustees - come
and go; the faculty remains, serene and untouchable. This helps to explain
some of the dysfunctions that mar big-time universities, such as the
overemphasis on publishing unintelligible articles and the under-emphasis
on teaching undergraduates. Armies of junior faculty and graduate-student
drudges have been enlisted to assume the bulk of the teaching load because
most of the tenured grandees think that instructing budding stockbrokers
and middle managers is beneath them. And there is almost nothing that
administrators can do about it because mere laziness is no grounds for
removing someone with a lifetime employment guarantee.

The solution is obvious: Abolish tenure. Subject professors to the
discipline of the marketplace like almost everyone else. But, of course,
this is an idea too radical to be seriously entertained on campus.
Comparing America with Nazi Germany, as Mr. Churchill routinely does,
doesn't raise an eyebrow among the intelligentsia, but suggesting that
there may be something fundamentally wrong with a system that rewards a
Ward Churchill is considered too outre to discuss.

2. Natan Sharansky has become the victim of KGB terror that the Left most
loves to hate. His sin? He is thought to have influenced President Bush
and helped persuade him that the time has come to push democracy as a
solution for the problems of terrorism and tyranny. Born in the Ukraine

advocate for human rights in the Soviet Union. (He also of course is

Rice likes what he says. Those yearning for a return to Soviet Stalinism

themselves because Sharansky not only is an Israeli, but is militantly

Counterpunch. Yes Alexander Cockburn's team is not only anti-Sharansky,
but decided to dig out the Israeli analogue to Taliban John to attack
Sharansky: Uri Avnery. Run alongside a new piece by Ward Churchill
explaining how the Americans are the REAL terrorists, Avnery's is a lame
hatchet job trying to discredit Sharansky. Avnery has spent most of his
career trying to help the enemies of his country win. He started out as
the Israeli Larry Flynt, publishing a semi-pornographic magazine that
mixed hooters with scandal-mongering. He wrote a book in the 60s
denouncing Zionism and endorsing the sort of solution for Israel that made
Rwanda what it became. He briefly sat in the parliament, wining the
protest votes of the sorts of people who would otherwise vote for Howard
Stern for President.

Avnery is so fanatically anti-Israel that when his own mother died, she
disinherited him in her will because she regarded him as a traitor. Avnery
runs the "Gush Shalom" splinter group, which is naturally awash in funds
donated by people who do not seek Israel's wellbeing. It is also endorsed
by neonazi white supremacists who appreciate an anti-Semite when they see
one. Avnery has become a Counterpunch regular, because Cockburn figures no
one will consider him an anti-Semite if he runs Israeli far-leftsists who
want their country destroyed.

Avnery whines that Sharansky Hebraicized his name when he got out of the
Gulag (never mind that Avnery was not his original name either). Then he
describes the dead PLO leader Feisal Husseini as "the real humanist". He
only "forgot" to tell us what this real humanist said in his last
interview to the Egyptian newspaper El Arav on June 24, 2001:
"Had the US and Israel understood before Oslo, that all that remained of
the Palestine liberation movement and the Pan-Arab movement was the Trojan
Horse
named Arafat or the PLO, they would have never opened their fortified
gates and
let him in." And he continued: "It is the obligation of all the
Palestinian
forces to see the Oslo Accords as temporary steps because in this way we
are
setting an ambush for the Israelis and cheating them" And he added:"The
main
goal is the liberation of all Palestine, from the sea to the river, even

requires a struggle that will continue 1000 years, or generation upon
generation". That is Avnery's "humanist"...

Avnery goes on to endorse a book that libeled Sharansky as a supposed KGB
spy. Sharansky sued the author and won $300,000 in a country in which it
is almost impossible for a public figure to win libel suits.

'His highly unoriginal contention that "democracies do not make war
against other democracies" is a perfect alibi for the United States to
attack
Iraq, Syria and Iran, which are, after all, no democracies (while

the
mightiest leader in the world, the commander of the biggest military

1. For years, we have been urging Israel to expel the journalists from
scenes in the West Bank and Gaza in which the army is fighting terror.
In fact, they should be kept out of the "occupied territories"

Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, wants
Hebrew University to take action in response to statements made by the
chair of the institution's German Studies department, Prof. Moshe
Zimmerman, who likened Israel Defense Forces soldiers and other Israeli
authorities to Nazis.

In a letter sent to Hebrew University President Prof. Menachem Magidor,
Foxman writes that while every professor has the right to express his or
her opinion, the university administration is obliged to consider taking
action when certain opinions cross the line and are damaging to the
institution and the Jewish people.

Foxman decided to intervene in the matter after it was repeatedly brought
to his attention by another university lecturer, Dr. Yaacov Bergman of the
School of Business Administration. Bergman urged Foxman to adopt the same
approach he took in the case of Colombia University, when he demanded that
the Ivy League school take action against lecturers there who had likened
the IDF and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to Nazis.

Foxman did not ask for specific steps to be taken against Zimmerman, but
he urged the university administration to take a stand on the matter.

Domestic universities have slipped into mediocrity

About 245,000 local students, a third of them new to the system, embarked
on their university studies this year. Most of them are unaware that in
global standards, the Israeli academic establishment has long ago slipped
into mediocrity.

Indeed, the fact two Israeli scientists won a Nobel Prize in chemistry
this year should not mislead us.

Our academic mediocrity is manifested in different ways: since Martin
Buber, for example, who passed away in 1965, Israel has failed to produce
a world-renowned philosopher.

Universities have not produced great historian

With the passing away of Yeshayahu Leibowitz 10 years ago, Israel lost its
last great philosopher, who was conspicuous in his solitude (Both of them,
by the way, were not products of Israeli academia.).

Moreover, domestic universities have not produced a great historian who
would break new ground in understanding historical processes. They also
cannot boast a sociologist who has developed a comprehensive theory for
understanding society's structure.

The country's academics have also failed to produce a psychologist who
opened a window to understanding the human soul, or political scientists
who have changed the way we view the political sphere.

Finally, there is no local social-political philosopher whose voice is
heard here and abroad, or a great economist who has paved new ways.

No university among Top 100

The findings of Thomson ISI, an American company specializing in
determining the scientific quality of research institutions across the
world, are not promising to say the least.

When it comes to the social sciences, no Israeli university is among the
top 100 global institutions, while in terms of clinical medical research
achievements, Israel falls below Kenya.

When it comes to the natural sciences, including agriculture, Israel
enjoys a respectable global status, but even here the decline is apparent.

What is the reason for the deterioration? After all, the potential of
Israeli academicians is not inferior to that of their colleagues
worldwide, is it?

Israel not a welfare state

In this context, I shall address two major factors: the failure to make
the country a benevolent welfare state, and the training and promotion
policy of scientists.

The country was never built as a genuine welfare state, and the situation
has been deteriorating since the 1980s. This reality manifests itself
through overcrowded classes, surging violence, and scholastic levels
doomed for mediocrity.

The Israeli student does not get his or her full share of culture and
education, and does not develop a sense of love for learning.

The situation is no better at higher education institutions. Indeed, the
Israeli student cannot wholly dedicate himself to his studies, close the
gaps, and develop into an educated person.

Students read little; cheating is common

The need to pay high tuition fees and ensure a reasonable material
existence leads most students to seek work while they study. This reality
has led to the emergence of a scandalous school culture, according to
Harvard University's Joseph Weiler, who examined law faculties here.

The student reads little and does not build a proper library during his
studies. Meanwhile, the culture of using substandard translations and
summaries flourishes, while cheating on tests and homework has become
commonplace.

Sadly, Israeli lecturers hail from this scholastic culture.

The universities, for their part, worsen the situation by the manner in
which they train their lecturers. Indeed, most of those who turn to
academic careers are not required to acquire extensive education outside
their field.

Hence, the average Israeli scientist has not acquired knowledge in the
philosophy of science, and has never seriously struggled with the question
of the human conscience's nature and limits.

Multidisciplinary inquiry is a precondition for genuine scientific
achievement. A political scientist who does not possess extensive
familiarity with economics, sociology and history is a limited political
scientist.

Indeed, the saying, "He who knows his field only, does not even know his
field," is valid in Israel as well.

without the truth.) Elkins tells us that she was taken in by Colonial
Office propaganda at the beginning of her research, as she leafed through
the files at the Public Record Office, and realised the extent of their
mendacity only when she went out to Kenya to see and hear for herself.
This may be part of the reason for the anger that suffuses her narrative,
in contrast to Anderson.s more clinical, dispassionate tone. No one likes

1. My own home university, the University of Haifa, has been the scene in
recent days of a saga of leftist campus McCarthyism. It all began when a
professor of Middle East political science, David Bukay, was accused by an
Arab student activist, who was not even formally registered in Bukay's
class, a student active in a student communist organization, of making
derogatory comments in class about Arabs.

The allegations were then planted in a local newspaper, and reported in
the Arab press. Then one of the Cockburn Cockroaches, a regular columnist
on Counterpunch with views about Jews resembling those of neonazis,
started spreading the allegations about the internet. Kurt Nimmo is an
unemployed New Mexico photographer-wannabe who writes crackpot articles
for Counterpunch and also for the neonazi web site Rense.com. Nimmo
routinely refers to all Jews as "Zionists", such as the new director of
the World Bank, and Nimmo makes it clear all "Zionists" need to be shipped
off in cattle cars to nice camps.

The only problem with the story about Bukay's alleged dissing of Arabs was
that none of the other student sin his class heard him say any such thing.
Bukay, who speaks Arabic better than I speak English, has taught students,
including many Arab students, Middle East politics for many years. An
investigation by the authorities at the university concluded that Bukay
never said what the student had alleged. Nevertheless, some leftist
professors have been operating a campaign of vilification against Bukay.

Meanwhile, the leftist press continues to "pitbull" against Bukay, and
Israel.s leftist Attorney General has ordered an "investigation" of Bukay
and his comments. Columnist and editor Ben-Dror Yemini takes all such
people to task in the paper Maariv for their double standards and
hypocrisy. Where are all the people hounding Bukay over alleged
insensitive comments when open leftist traitors endorse anti-Semitism and
Arab terrorism and spread anti-Jewish blood libels, he wonders? How come
Bukay is not entitled to academic free speech but the tenured traitors are
never subject to similar "investigation"?

Subject: The Anniversary of Rachel Corrie's Suicide on Behalf of Terrorists

March 16 is the second anniversary of Rachel Corrie's idiotic decision to commit suicide by challenging an Israeli bulldozer driver to a game of chicken. Corrie won the game, at the cost of her life.

Corrie was in Israel as part of the Solidarity-with-Terrorism delegations sent in by the pro-terror ISM (International Solidarity Movement), an organization of anti-Israel propagandists in designer jeans, all in close, indeed slavish, coordination with the PLO. The ISM pro-terrorists have set up a memorial web site to lie about how she died. They are holding a big Bash-Israel commemoration in Oakland this week. Corrie has become the martyr saint for the Islamofascist movements. The ISM hates Jews so much that it is willing to demonize Arab Israeli patriots as part of its jihad against Zionism.

The ISM is not simply an innocent, if evil, fringe campus debating society. Within Israeli territories, its members have actively collaborated with terrorists. They have hidden weapons and wanted terrorists in their offices. The local ISM offices hosted two Moslem suicide bombers from the UK, who had entered Israel as "peace activists," only to blow a Tel Aviv bar to smithereens the next day.

In fact, Corrie died protecting smuggling tunnels, used to smuggle in explosives and weapons that Palestinians use to mass murder Israeli children on buses and other living things. Israeli troops were demolishing houses astride the tunnels in order to dynamite the tunnels when Corrie decided to challenge them. Like all ISM members, Corrie believed the PLO and its affiliates have an unalienable right to murder Jews, and that Jews trying to stop the terrorists must be hindered and harassed. That is the whole reason why ISM routinely sends its campus "anarchists" to Israel. It should be noted that ISM does not send its members to protect Chechnyan terrorists from Russians nor to protect Baathists in Fallujah, because they know how non-Israelis would handle such trouble-makers. Ironically, the very fact that they come to Israel and not to other countries is testimony to Israel's democracy, openness, tolerant nature, and probably excessive patience.

Corrie was a US Flag-burning extremist, someone who clearly sympathised with Palestinians conducting murder, but felt no "solidarity" at all for the Israeli children murdered by terrorists. The great irony was that the bulldozer operator whom Corrie was trying to harass did not see her at all. Had he seen her, Corrie's strategy of forcing the dozer to back down in the game of chicken would have worked.

After commiting suicide, Corrie was beatified by the anti-Jewish anti-American Left, turned into the patron saint of the jihadniks and their leftist amen choruses. It is not surprising that Counterpunch runs a piece this week by a propagandist trying to convince readers that Corrie was something other than a 23 year old dupe of terrorists. It is written by one Alison Weir, who runs an anti-Israel web site called "If Americans Knew". The site presents tendentious statistics showing that more Palestinians have been injured or killed in recent years than have Israelis. This is supposed to "prove" the Israelis are iun the wrong, and is about as convincing as an attempt to claim that Americans were the aggressors in World War II because the numbers of Americans killed by Germany and Japan were fewer than the Japanese and Germans killed by the Americans.

In typical Jew-bashing leftist manner, Weir ignores the fact that the Jews in question were murdered in cold blood, while the Palestinians killed were either terrorists or civilians caught in the crossfire when Palestinian terrorists opened fire from amongst civilians. The number of innocent Palestinian civilians intentionally killed by Israel is a great big whopping zero.

In Weir's parallel universe, " Congress is intimidated into denying her parents' right to an investigation of the American 'ally' who murdered their daughter." Congress would be better advised to investigate who is funding Weir's little web site and maybe also investigate parents like the Corries who cavalierly send their children off to war zones to promote terrorism and interfere with anti-terror operations by democracies. As Dennis Prager wrote:

1. The Palestinians' Delicate Sensitivity
I can see the PC Left demanding that this be handled in new "sensitivity
training" sessions. It seems some Palestinians leaders are upset over
"racial slurs" concerning jailed Palestinian mass murderers. A PA official
responsible for the welfare of terrorist murderers in Israeli prisons,
Sufian Abu Zeida, said that Israel must stop using racist terms in regard
to imprisoned terrorists and must release them all. Zeida said that
calling such murderers .prisoners with blood on their hands. is a racial
slur. He fears that people might think that having hands covered with
blood is a trait only of Palestinians, I guess.

So what exactly should they be called? Maybe - law-challenged? Jew-averse?

2. Cockburn's Counterpunch Runs a Syrian Mouthpiece

Joining the other insects and virtual varmints who turn out anti-American
and anti-Israel propaganda for Alexander Cockburn's Counterpunch cyber-rag
is now one Ramzy Baroud. Baroud's contribution to web thought is to argue
that the US is simply being manipulated by dem Joos in Israel into
confrontation with Syria. In Baroud's "mind":

"And now that the Lebanese people have had the courage to demand that
Syria stop meddling with their affairs, will Americans prove equally
courageous to demand and expect an end to Israel's role in shaping
American foreign policy? Time will tell."

So who exactly is this intellectual prodigy?

Turns out Baroud runs a PLO-front propaganda outfit called Palestine
Chronicle, and also moonlights for Al-Jazeera. But Baroud is also a
pro-Syrian propagandist and he has worked for a Syrian propaganda
publisher, which published Baroud's tissue of lies concerning the Battle
of Jenin.

Baroud is author of "Searching Jenin: Eyewitness Accounts of the Israeli
Invasion."

To understand it, imagine that someone were to publish a book about how
Germans were brutalized and terrorized by American racist GIs who unjustly
occupied their country in 1945 for no reason at all besides anti-German
bigotry. Imagine that this same book never quite got around to mentioning
that the brutal Americans had occupied Germany only after Nazi Germany
launched World War II, which produced 55 million deaths. Imagine that this
book ignored Auschwitz and Dachau. Well, if you can imagine such a book,
then you are only partly on your way to understand Searching Jenin, a vile
shallow propaganda screed that makes the PLO's Covenant look like a
masterpiece in cool impartial analysis.

The book is published by Cune Press, a small propaganda outfit based in
Seattle that produces the sorts of Far Left anti-American and pro-Arab
books of which Osama bin Laden would approve, and with a special interest
in printing sycophantic volumes about Syria.

These days, even the BBC admits that there was no massacre at all in Jenin
and at most a handful of Palestinian civilianz got killed in the crossfire
when Israeli troops hunted down terrorists. The Israeli Arab film producer
Mohammed Bakri, partly responsible for inventing the lies about a supposed
"massacre" in the battle in his film "Jenin Jenin", now admits that his
film about the battle is full of lies.

Baroud's propaganda "book" about the same battle contains a foreword by
the Khmer Rouge's apologist Noam Chomsky, also a Burncock columnist, and
jacket endorsements by professional Arab propagandist James Zogby and
other anti-Israel thugs.

As one would expect from this genre of propaganda, one never learns in the
book why Israel launched Operation Defensive Wall against Jenin terrorists
in the first place. You will never hear how the UNs own investigators
proved there was no massacre at all in Jenin. You will never hear about
how so many Israeli troops were killed there because they were risking
their lives NOT to harm any innocent Palestinians. And you will never
learn that Jenin was crawling with mass murdering terrorists and those who
had organized suicide bombings against Jewish civilians.

The book begins by telling us the tragic saga of photojournalist Mahfouz
Abu Turk, who - Baroud insists - mysteriously disappeared in the middle of
the Jenin battle, implying that he was murdered by the rampaging Israelis.
Only in the appendix will you discover that Abu Turk is alive and well,
was never injured, and I guess disappeared only in the sense that Baroud
did not know where he was for a few hours.

This is the latest recruit to the ranks of the Cockburn Cockroaches.

1. Let's Play "Name That Zionist!"

Yesterday, Syrian Dictator Bashar Assad announced that Syria was going to
pull out of Lebanon in the same sense that China has pulled out of Tibet.
The establishment press is ignoring the fact that Lebanon is ALSO crawling
with Iranian troops, doing Assad's bidding. Even if Syria is forced out,
these hit squads can continue to terrorize the Lebanese. Israel was
nonplussed by Assad's speech.

But pressure on Syria is just part of the continuing cornucopia of
benefits coming from the Allied toppling of Saddam Hussein. There are now
voices in Egypt calling for democracy as well. Meanwhile, the world is
unaware of how weak Syria is economically, in part because the CIA
exaggerates Syria's GDP by a factor of at least 5.

There is one crucial aspect of the Assad attempt to give the world a
Brooklyn cheer that is being overlooked. Assad is not only flipping the
bird to the world when he continues his aggression against Israel, he is
also defying the wisdom of his OWN GREATGRANDFATHER, who endorsed Zionism!
I quote:

"Those good Jews brought civilization and peace to the Arab Muslims, and
they dispersed gold and prosperity over Palestine without damage to anyone
or taking anything by force. Despite this, the Muslims declared holy war
against them and did not hesitate to massacre their children and women...

Mandates are cancelled and Muslim Syria is united with Muslim Palestine."

The statement is from a letter sent to the French Prime Minister in June
1936 by six Syrian Alawi notables (the Alawis are the ruling class in
Syria today) in support of Zionism. Bashar's greatgrandfather, the
grandfather of Hafez al-Assad, the former Fuhrer of Syria, was one of

Another Syrian daring to tell the truth was THE PRIME Minister of Syria in
1948, Khaled al-Azem.

Iin his memoirs, published in 1973, listed what he thought were the

2. Ken the Red and his Genocidal Sheikh Friend

One of the leading members of the Leftist-Islamofascist Axis of Evil is
London Mayor Ken Livingston, known in the UK as Red Ken, or Redken as some
prefer to call him. Redken is also a well-known shampoo. One can only wish
that London voters will wash that particular shampoo right out of their
hair. And then vigorously apply some anti-Jihad conditioner.

Ken Livingstone, the Far-Left Mayor of London, England with the fuzzy
Marxist agenda has been in the news recently and not only for calling a
Jewish reporter a Nazi concentration camp guard. That last inident is now
being treated by Scotland Yard as a hate crime. This is the same guy that
insists that George W. Bush needs to be overthrown as badly as Saddam
Hussein was.

London's Hizzohuh Duh Mare also recently called Ariel Sharon a war
criminal and claimed that Israel had engaged in ethnic cleansing. In the
Guardian who wrote an Op-Ed saying, "Israel's expansion has included
ethnic cleansing. Palestinians who had lived in that land for centuries
were driven out by systematic violence and terror aimed at ethnically
cleansing what became a large part of the Israeli state. " Some ethnic
cleansing! A little research into the population statistics show that the
Arab Muslim population of Israel which stood at 10.8% in 1970 grew
progressively to 14% by 1990 and now stands at 16%.

RedKen seems to have confused the role of Jews in Israel with the role of
the English in the Irish Plantation. He has also never had a word to say
about the genocide being carried out by his Islamofascist friends in the
Sudan.

Livingston has been sucking up to Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, welcoming the
Islamist and fundamentalist sheikh from Qatar to London. Al-Qaradawi is
well-known in the UK for endorsing such expressions of Islamist moderation
as calls for Moslems who convert out of Islam to be executed, and support
for murdering homosexuals and Jews, beating women, and promoting female
genital mutilation. In his own words, 'whoever finds it serving the
interest of his daughters should do it, and I personally support this
under the current circumstances in the modern world.' Moderate Moslems
condemned the sycophant treatment of the genocidal sheikh by Hizzonuh.

Naturally, al-Qaradawi is dedicated to the destruction of Israel and all
Jews and has made no secret of it. But Livingstone claimed that Qaradawi
was an enemy of terrorism. When a genuinely moderate Egyptian cleric,
Mohammad Sayed Tantawi, condemned the murders of Israeli children by
suicide bombers, Qaradawi, was furious. 'Has fighting colonizers become a
criminal and terrorist act for some sheikhs?' he roared.

Livingston apologized to the Bloody Sheikh for supposed attacks on Moslems
in London. In a Sunday Times article Jasper Gerard, who is pro Palestinian
and has a Turkish wife, wrote about how exaggerated were the claims of
attacks on Muslims, with statistics to back him up. He then suggested that
British Jews were the most persecuted minority in Britain today, drawing
on reports of the attack on 8 Orthodox Jews in London.

Livingston has also been charged in the British press with "hoarding
cronies" and using public money to set up his own re-election committee.

Speaking of Islamofascist heroes of the Left, recently here on Moonbat
Central we discribed how a Syrian al-Jazeera "reporter" with ties to
al-Qaeda who was arrested in Spain has become the new hero for the Axis of
Evil linking the Far Left and the Islamofascists. Well, now it turns out
that the Madrid bombers he was evidently assisting were planning a new
attack on New York City.

Sir, - In his op-ed "Blacklist at the university," Larry Derfner quotes
this sentence from my op-ed "Radical oasis in the Negev": "Even if
academic freedom is construed as being unbound by minimal notions of truth
or loyalty, this should not prevent donors from conditioning their
contributions carefully, and potential students and their parents from
taking heed."

Much as Derfner resorts to words like "blacklist" and "witch-hunt," there
is nothing in that quote, nor anywhere else in my article, that can be
construed as attempting to silence academics or limit their freedom. If
academics at taxpayer- and donor-supported universities are free to call
Israel a fascist, genocidal state, work to have it ostracized and
boycotted, and demand that it be dissolved, then taxpayers are free to
object publicly, donors are free to get more careful about their
donations, and students and their parents are free to question whether
they desire such an "education."

The only one with an urge to silence anyone appears to be Derfner, who
doesn't like the fact that concerned Israelis and Jews are making others
aware of the vicious things being said against the Jewish people and their
country at universities like Ben-Gurion and Columbia.

There is an old Swazi legend about a beautiful maiden who fell in love with a handsome warrior. But to win her hand he had to present her with the skin of a leopard, which he had to hunt for on rugged Gobolondlo Mountain. While hunting on the mountainside, he was seized by resident witches, who turned him into a white flower, condemning him for his trespassing to bloom and die among the mountain grasses. When after many days the warrior had still not returned, the lamenting maiden sat on the river`s edge where her inexhaustible tears flowed to form the Phophonyane waterfalls of Swaziland.

Safed. One of the four traditional holy cities of the Land of Israel. The town is one large continuum of yeshivas and religious schools of a hundred different styles, wintry cold even while the rest of the country bathes in warm sunshine. It is a few days before Tu b#787;Shvat, and there are chassidim here of every imaginable type, mixed with young Americans and Israelis with their tsitsit hanging out who look like they are no more than two or three years removed from decidedly non-Orthodox lifestyles.

Safed is the town of the ARI, Rabbi Isaac Luria (1534-1572), the greatest of all Jewish kabbalists. It is also the home of the Rabbi Prince from Swaziland.

His is one of the most familiar faces to the locals of Safed. While I wait for him in Safed#787;s Old City, a Yemenite man with flowing sidecurls comes out of his shop and makes conversation with me. He inquires about who I am searching for. His face brightens with instant recognition at my mention of Rabbi Natan. ?Yes, he is the son of a king,? he says. ?But then again," he adds after a pause, ?all Jews are children of a King.?

Swaziland is one of the few remaining kingdoms on earth. For a generation whose knowledge of Africa often ends with Disney`s Lion King, it is a land of the utter unknown. An independent monarchy surrounded on three sides by South Africa and on the fourth by Mozambique, its million residents are among the poorest on earth. Just about the only time Swaziland merits mention in Western newspapers these days is when it`s pointed out that the country has been ravaged by the world#787;s worst per-capita epidemic of AIDS.

The Swazis were a wandering African tribe that came down across Mozambique in the late fifteenth century, stumbling onto the fertile Veld lands of what is now Swaziland. The people speak English and Nguna, a dialect related to Zulu. Spreading as far as the high Emlembe or the ?place of the spider,? they named the country KaNgwane, after their chief, and called themselves the bantu baka Ngwane, the people of Ngwane. During the mfecane, or the ?time of the crushing,? they defeated all the other tribes in their area and successfully fought off a major war of aggression by the seemingly invincible Zulu state. They maintained their independence into the twentieth century, with the help of their clever maneuvering of the Boers and British.

The early Swazis were a monotheistic people, holding a belief in a single deity whom they knew as Umkhulumnqande. Sobhuza, perhaps the greatest of their kings, had prophesied that light-skinned people would one day enter the country carrying an umculu, or holy book, and he ordered his people to accept that book when this should come to pass. The Swazis blessed new moons and circumcised their menfolk. When a Swazi girl grew up and fell in love, she would set out to ?write? her sweetheart a love letter in which she could express her hopes and desires. This ?letter? was made of tribal beads, each one expressing a specific meaning linked to its color, but each also representing a specific letter.

Swaziland is a predominantly Christian country. (Somewhat bizarrely, one large Swazi religious Christian movement calls itself ?Zionism,? from which come the African ?Zionist? churches.)

Rabbi Natan was born Prince Nkosinathi Gamedze in 1963. The Gamedze clan was one of the two large royal tribal clans in Swaziland, the power base for the kings of the country. It was actually Rabbi Natan#787;s grandfather, not his father, who was the last king from the family to rule.

During the reign of the last Gamedze king, the British, who had recently defeated the Boers in a long and bloody war, toyed with the politics of the country, redrawing borders and brokering Swazi power. As part of the restructuring, the kingship was passed over to the rival Dlamini clan, the other large Swazi royal tribe. The last of the Gamedze kings abdicated and spent his final years as a Christian pastor, while his brother took over as chief of the clan.

But the clan was not entirely removed from favor. The son of that last king, Rabbi Natan#787;s father, served as Swazi liaison to the British Empire in London, and later as Swazi minister of education. He raised a family of eight children who lived in royal comfort and wealth in the impoverished capital city of Mbabane. The only Jew the prince had ever seen was the Israeli ambassador to Swaziland.

The prince was sent to Johannesburg to study at the University of Witswatersrand. These were still the days of South African apartheid, but the first cracks in the system were showing. Being from the Swazi royal family, the young prince was not required to live in the dilapidated black sections of the city, but instead was one of the first black students to be allowed to live in the white dormitories of the university.

Languages were his passion. He admits today to speaking thirteen languages fluently, but I suspect he is being modest and actually speaks far more. In any case, the thirteen do not include languages he ?merely? understands completely and works with in his studies, such as Talmudic Aramaic and Yiddish.

At ?Wits? University he studied a series of European and African languages. One day he was sitting next to a student who was doing some homework in a language with bizarre-looking letters. ?What alphabet is that?? he asked. ?Hebrew,? was the response.

The following semester the Russian language class he wished to take was fully booked. So instead he signed up to study Hebrew. Most of the other students in the class were non-religious white Jewish students with whom he would form many long-lasting friendships. His brothers and sisters poked fun at him for his choice of courses, nicknaming him ?The Rabbi? in jest.

Toward the end of his studies there, he was approached by an Israeli professor on sabbatical from Hebrew University. The professor suggested that the prince come to Jerusalem on fellowship to continue his language studies. He jumped at the chance and entered Hebrew University in 1988. Some of his Jewish friends from ?Wits? were now also in Jerusalem, several studying at the Ohr Sameach yeshiva there. The prince would visit the yeshiva to see his South African friends, occasionally sitting in on evening classes. He soon started reading on his own, particularly the works of Maimonides.

In the fall of 1989, he traveled to Rome while Hebrew University was shut for the religious holidays. One morning he woke up in a hotel near the Vatican feeling hungry and went down to the breakfast room. Sitting there, he stared at the food, but each time he took some in his hand, his arm felt weary and seemed to resist the notion of carrying the food to his mouth.

Back in his room, he recalled that he had heard that Jews have one day a year when everyone, regardless of level of observance, fasts. Curius, he checked his Hebrew University calendar. Sure enough, this was that day ? Yom Kippur.

But the real change in his life came a few days later. He stood in St. Peter`s Basilica in the Vatican and contemplated the centuries of suffering the Jews had experienced at the hands of the Church. It was there and then that he made up his mind. He was going to convert to Judaism. Back in his hotel near the Vatican, he recited the ?Shema Yisrael? for the first time.

He realized he would not have an easy time of it. It would be an enormously challenging task to learn his way through Judaism from scratch and to gain acceptance. He would be the only black person on the yeshiva bench. Moreover, his family at home would have trouble coming to terms with all this; would see him as someone lost to their Christian faith.

None of that mattered to him. ?Truth must outweigh everything,? he tells me as we sip coffee in the caf? in the old Safed alley. ?Truth is everything, and I understood in the depths of my soul that Judaism was the truth. Nothing else mattered after that.?

The caf? owner has been eavesdropping. Now he interrupts us. He wears a baseball cap with the letters USA, but his London accent gives him away. ?I am a convert also,? he says, ?and we converts see things so much clearer than you confused Jews from birth. Perhaps there should be a special prayer in the morning where we thank God for having made us gentiles who had to convert.?

Rabbi Natan smiles. He seems to comprehend.

While he feels at home in the yeshiva world, Rabbi Natan has no patience for Orthodox Jews who show disrespect toward their non-Orthodox brethren, or who shout ?Shabbos? at anyone who violates the Sabbath. He feels a special affection for secular Jews, along with a mixture of envy at their having been born into the faith and incredulity at their failure to appreciate the religious treasures they inherited. He thinks they struggle internally with the question of who`s the boss ? themselves or God. And he thinks the onus is on Orthodox Jews to bridge the gap.

After returning from Rome he told the rabbis at Ohr Sameach of his decision. They set up a study group to assist him. He began with Torah and the Rashi commentary. In 1991 he formally converted. He was renamed Natan, the son of Abraham.

But conversion was only the beginning. He had decided he wanted to do advanced rabbinic studies and become an ordained Orthodox rabbi. After finishing Ohr Sameach, he transferred to the Brisk Yeshiva in the Old City for his advanced studies.

The transition from Ohr Sameach to Brisk was almost as dramatic as the move from Africa to Jerusalem. It was a different world. Brisk is one of the toughest schools in the ?Lithuanian tradition? of haredi (ultra-Orthodox) studies. The instruction is in Yiddish. Natan already spoke German, though, and so was able to catch on and follow the Yiddish of his instructors.

The Lithuanian yeshivas were the bastions of the Ashkenazi misnagdim, or those who opposed chassidism. So it was ironic ? though from what I know of him, perhaps not unexpected, that after completing his studies the Rabbi Prince from the misnaged yeshiva would find himself in Safed, with its large numbers of chassidim.

While there are many African Jews in Israel, mainly Ethiopians, they very rarely merge into the haredi lifestyle. Rabbi Natan can be picked out from a distance due to his haredi clothing and accompanying black hat. If it were not for his skin color, he could pass for a denizen of Meah Shearim ? except for one detail: he does not have sidecurls, perhaps because of the difficulty of training his delicate African hair to shape themselves into Eastern European payot.

Rabbi Natan speaks in a quiet and patient tone, so different from the usual Israeli hustle and high-decibel shouting. He has been teaching and studying in Safed since his move there in 1991. He is marrid to Shayna Golda, an American woman who moved to Israel from New York, and they have two children. In the sixteen years since he moved to Israel, he has gone back just once to Africa, where he had a highly emotional reunion with his family.

South Africa seemed like a different galaxy from the one he`d left. It was strange seeing black Africans actually in charge. But he was now the Jewish foreigner in his native land. South Africans seem to be fascinated with him; a South African TV station even prepared a special documentary on his life, and he will go back for another visit and speaking tour when it airs this spring.

The biblical Song of Songs is, on an earthly level, a story about the beautiful black Shulamit ? a sort of love letter composed of Jewish tribal beads. It was included in the Hebrew Bible because it is considered an allegory of the love affair between Israel and God Himself. The beautiful black maiden Shulamit is the symbol of the nation of Israel, filled with uncontrollable passion for her lover.

The great Rabbi Akiba once said, ?For the whole world is not worth the day on which the Song of Songs was given to Israel, for all the Writings are holy and the Song of Songs is the Holy of Holies? (Mishna Yadayim 3:5). As Rabbi Natan bids me farewell, returning down the alley of Old Safed to resume his teaching, Rabbi Akiba#787;s comment takes on a whole new meaning for me.

1. Almost the entire world, certainly the entire civilized world, is in
awe and in dazed euphoria at the sight of Lebanese defying the Syrian
fascist regime, openly demanding liberation of their country from Syrian
oppression. Many of us who never believed we would see such a movement
in our lifetimes are overwhelmed with admiration for this rebellion of the
masses against tyranny, all this in the Arab world.

Interestingly, not EVERY person in the democratic West is overjoyed at
seeing Syrian fascism at last challenged. Noam Chomksy, the MIT inventor
of now-discredited theories of linguistics, is determined to
defend and perpetuate Syrian colonialization of Lebanon, no matter how
many Lebanese lives it costs.

His reason? He insists Syrian occupation of Lebanon is necessary as a
way to prevent those evil Israelis from doing horrid deeds in Lebanon,
like attempting to protect its citizens from terrorist attacks launched
out of Lebanon. Yes, the same academic apologist for the Khmer Rouge, who
defended the communist regime in Cambodia to the last throughout the years
of the genocide it carried out, prefers to have Lebanon under Asad's
jackboot, especially if it prevents the Lebanese from engaging in their
notorious fondness for capitalism and entrepreneurship, which Chomsky
wants wiped out and replaced with Stalinism, and if it also deters Israel
from striking terrorist bases.

Really.

Chomsky is redistributing a screed on the usual moonbat web sites, those
that otherwise spend their days celebrating the Ward Churchill ideas,
in which Chomsky sings the song of celebrating Ba'athism.

On a personal note, I have long argued that people become leftists as a

father believed.

The Bible? You know, that same Bible that contains those Ten
Commandments that the American Left is this week demanding before the
Supreme Court be prohibited from public display?

After all, the Left would not want people
running around in public not stealing, murdering or committing adultery.
But the REAL clause that enrages the Leftists is that part about showing
respect to their Father and Mother.

Four Israelis held for allegedly attacking French comedian

Four men were being held at a police station at Fort-de-France, Martinique
yesterday for allegedly attacking the French comedian Dieudonne, according
to the head of public security in the region, Bernard Cateau.

Sources close to the investigation said the four had allegedly entered
Martinique on Israeli passports, however Cateau subsequently refused to
provide information about their nationalities in order not to hamper the
investigation.

On Tuesday, the High Court of Appeals, France's highest court, demanded
the verdict from both a Paris criminal court and the Paris Appeals Court
be overturned, and that Dieudonne be convicted of a misdemeanor for
insulting the Jewish faith in statements he made in 2003 to a newspaper.
He may also face legal action for more recently calling Holocaust
ceremonies "memorial pornography."

Syrian Intellectuals Call Upon President Al-Assad to Withdraw Syrian
Troops from Lebanon

The Lebanese daily Al-Nahar recently published two communiqus signed by
Syrian intellectuals. One, published on February 23, 2005, was directed to
Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, and called upon him to begin the
withdrawal of Syrian forces from Lebanon. It was signed by over 140
intellectuals, whose names appeared in Al-Nahar.(1)

The other communique, published on February 24, 2005, was signed by 33
Syrian intellectuals and was directed to Lebanese intellectuals. It
supported the Lebanese demand for Syrian withdrawal and called for
protection of Syrian laborers in Lebanon.(2)

The following are extracts from the two communiques:

Syrian Intellectuals to Bashar Al-Assad: 'It Is High Time that Syria
Adopts a New Policy'

"There is a new, formidable, and dangerous [matter] that has reached our
country and is attempting to shape its destiny and the future of its
generations. The international pressures are intensifying and assuming
diverse shapes and forms, and the Syrian people does not know what awaits
it. It is futile to insist upon outdated political means of dealing with
crises, and it is high time that Syria adopts a new policy that will take
[the new reality] into account, particularly after the crime of Rafiq
Al-Hariri's assassination, and will hasten to establish healthy, generous
relations with Lebanon.

"The implementation of the Taif Agreement and the beginning of the
withdrawal of the Syrian military forces from Lebanon will enable us to
take advantage of the present opportunity and to guard against disastrous
developments. If this initiative is implemented today in response to the
desire of the Syrian and Lebanese peoples to forge a new bond between
them, the excuses of external [elements] will be overcome and a new path
will be paved to rebuild mutual trust and support between the two peoples
and the two countries in their struggle against joint challenges."

Syrian Intellectuals to the Lebanese: 'We Support Your Demand to Withdraw
the Syrian Army from Lebanon'

The following are excerpts from the other communiqu, signed by 33 Syrian
intellectuals and directed to Lebanese intellectuals:

"We support your demand to withdraw the Syrian army from Lebanon, to
rectify Syrian-Lebanese relations, and to base [these relations] on
equality, on independence, on freedom of choice for both peoples and on
the interests of both countries.

"We, as Syrian intellectuals who have always found in Lebanon a window [of
opportunity] to express our views - [views that] we have not been able to
express in the homeland [i.e., Syria] - speak to you frankly, [saying]
that we feel hurt and pained at seeing and hearing those who humiliate
Syria, its people and citizens, who have committed no crime, and [at
seeing and hearing] those who attack poor Syrian laborers, who have come
to earn a meager living in your nearby and distinguished country...

"As justice requires [the fulfillment of] your demand to remove [Syrian]
hegemony from Lebanon, it also requires that the poor laborers who
participated in the construction of Lebanon be treated in a dignified
manner...

"If the withdrawal of the Syrian forces from Lebanon constitutes the
beginning of a reform in relations between the two countries, threats
against and humiliation of weak Syrian citizens damage and poison the
future of these relations..."

Dear Sir; US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and UN Secretary
General Kofi Annan called for a Paalestinian state that is
'contiguous'. This means that all parts of the country are connected.
The Secretary of StateConoleeza Rice is aware, I am
sure, that the the United States is not a 'contiguous' country and
yet functions quite well. Another country without 'contiguous'
territory is Pakistan. No one, that I can recall, has recently called
for these two countries, and other non-contiguous countries, to
become one connected country.

1. There is one little detail about the atrocity that took place this week
in Tel Aviv that is being overlooked. A few nights ago a Palestinian
suicide bomber named Abdullah Badran, operating as an agent of the
.Islamic Jihad. based in Syria, carried out a terrorist atrocity in Tel
Aviv at Syria.s orders. He blew himself up and murdered five Israelis,
one a woman about to get married, and wounded about 50 others.

What is being overlooked is that one reason for this atrocity was that
Israel.s government had just mindlessly decided that houses of Palestinian
suicide bombers will no longer be demolished. Until recently, Israel made
a practice out of demolishing homes of terrorists as a deterrent. But
Israel was taking public relations flack for it. The ISM pro-terrorists
were turning each demolition into a media circus. Israel's own leftists
were screaming that destroying the house of a terrorist was a far worse
crime than Arab fascists mass murdering Jewish children. And the Israeli
army was exhausted and tired of being a political pounding post.

So just a few days before this latest atrocity, the policy was altered.
No more demolitions. Not even if the house belonged to a mass murderer.
Not even if the house was illegally constructed in the first place.
Deterrence was not just worth a little bad press.

The result has been five new Jewish graves.

The family of Abdullah Badran are having pot roast this evening at

5. When a 'shield' takes a blow
Sir, - It's hard for me to feel sympathy for Brian Avery, shot in the head
while walking in Jenin during a curfew ("State agrees to hear witnesses in
shooting of ISM activist," March 1).

Avery came to the area, a known center of terrorist activity, as a "human
shield," his intention being to intervene in a war situation on the
Palestinian side. It seems like hutzpa to then complain when he is shot.

If I saw ISM activists acting as human shields around Israelis queuing
outside bars in Tel Aviv or traveling on Israeli buses, that might
increase my sympathy for them.

1. The Axis of Evil takes on Starbucks

Now it is one thing for all those Islamist militant groups and their
leftist apologists pretending to care about human rights to advocate
genocide of Jews and to cheer when Arab fascists mass murder Jewish
civilians. But it is another thing when they decide to mess with my
Starbucks.

Yes, a group of advocacy groups promoting Islamofascism are dissing and
boycotting Starbucks! Is there no limit to their savagery? The Islamic
Human Rights Commission and Innovative Minds, supported by Friends of
al-Aqsa, the Palestinian Return Centre, the Muslim Association of Britain,
and the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, have been in a series of
discussions with Oxfam regarding its agreement with pro-Zionist
multinational coffee chain Starbucks. You know, the usual NGOs for
genocide.

What did poor Starbucks do to arouse the ire of these great believers in

100,000 to Oxfam's rural development programme in the East Harare coffe
growing region of Ethiopia.

Howard Schultz is a pro-Zionist activist whose own activities include
helping student projects in North America and Israel give presentations on
the Israeli perspective of the Intifada. Ironically, when Starbucks tried
to open a chain in Israel, it failed, because Israel is one of the few
places outside the Bay Area or Italy where people drink decent coffee
already! (Well, France also, but there you have to be around the French to
drink the coffee.)

Sir, - Re "The Negev's radical oasis" (February 28): As a student at Leeds
University in Britain I was quite relieved to see you bringing the issue
of Israeli radicals to the attention of your readers. As an active member
of my Jewish Society I had the displeasure of hearing Oren Yiftachel
speaking - supposedly about "democracy," but in reality about anything
but. I was really shocked by his vindictiveness.

Having listened to many speakers on the Middle East over the years,
Yiftachel was the only one I have lost my temper over. Fortunately we have

3. Counterpunch joining the Holocaust Deniers?

Counterpunch, the anti-American anti-Semitic web rag of the American far
Left, is going to bat to defend the free speech rights of vicious
anti-Semites. This week it runs as its lead piece:

In particular, Johnstone gets all PMS over the denial of "freedom of
speech" to assorted Holocaust Deniers in Europe, those guilty of "The
Auschwitz Lie". Yes, she puts that phrase in quotation marks so that we
all know that she does not really think that those denying that genocide
was perpetrated in Auschwitz are liars. Basically her goal is denounce
all those who accuse people of being anti-Semites just because they hate
all Jews.

Here is Johnstone at her finest:

"In the face of worldwide protests over treatment of Palestinians,
increasing efforts have been made to extend the definition of
"anti-Semitism" to cover criticism of Israel. By insisting that there can
be no distinction between Jews and "the Jewish state" (a proposition
vigorously denied by many if not most French Jews = so says the dingabt,
not the French Jews -- SP), and thereby
identifying criticism of Israel with "anti-Semitism", the ultra-Zionists
seem to be provoking the anti-Semitism they denounce. Whether or not this
is deliberate is debatable. France has the largest Jewish population in
Europe, a skilled and assimilated population that Ariel Sharon is openly
trying to lure to Israel by claiming that Jews are not safe anywhere else,
and notably not in France because of alleged anti-Semitism. Once
criticism of Israel is identified with anti-Semitism, it becomes

Cukierman, a far right Zionist who presides over the

But what REALLY gets Johnstone's nappies soiled is the attack against a
French-African neonazi named Dieudonn. He appears on TV in France and in
nightclubs as a "comedian. A while back, dressed as a uniformed Israeli
settler in the Palestinian occupied territories, he has called on young
people to "join the American-Zionist axis of good". This was punctuated by

He frequently attacks Jews for claiming there whining
about the Holocaust when they are mistreating the poor Palestinians. On

Johnstone, as a typical Cockburn Cockroach, is convinced the Holocaust
is all an exaggeration and does not need any particular remembering,
especially when those Israelis are so evil. She
adds, "Why was it that subsidies were available for some 150 films on the
Holocaust, while he (Dieudonn) was unable to get backing for a film on the
'code noir', the legal basis for the French slave trade?" Johnstone adds,
"the campaign against Dieudonn amounts to an attempt to silence a leading
voice of secular universalism with a strong following among young people
of all communities in France, notably-but by no means exclusively-among
children of immigrants from African and Arab countries."

She then repeats the standard line about how the "broad tendency to use
the charge of 'anti-Semitism' to silence criticism of United States policy
in the Middle East, including the conquest of Iraq." Gosh, how can people
actually dare to call those who hate Jews anti-Semites?

For years, the Cockburn Cockroaches have been screaming out their
indignations against those who think that, just because they want all the
Israeli Jews massacred, this should not make them anti-Semites. And just
because the only country on the face of the planet they want annihilated
happens to be a Jewish state should not cast doubt on their noble values
and aspirations. When the heroes of the Cockburns of the world are done
murdering all the Zionists, there will be no Jews left.

If you had any doubts about the Counterpunch pogromchiki, another piece
by another Cockburn Cockroach, PAUL de ROOIJ

Israel needs to be destroyed. The fact that the Jews of Israel would be
annihilated if the state of Israel would be destroyed is simply an
unpleasant coicidence and certain should not make anyone suspect of being
an Anti-Semite. "The foundation of the State of Israel was an historical
mistake, and this crime was made possible thanks to the British imposition
of the Jewish migration to Palestine." He then goes on to prove his case
by citing Israel's answer Tokyo Rose, Tel Aviv University's Tanya
Reinhart, a protege of Chomsky who will not rest till the Jews have been
thrown into the sea.

Cockburn is still on his jihad against "Jewish power"

the Jews spread anthrax and the Mossad was involved in knocking down the
WTC on 9-11. When Cockburn goosesteps about in front of his mirror in the

Israel's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, was a fervent nationalist
who would turn in his grave to hear some of the things being said by
academics at the Israeli university that bears his name.

There are, of course, radicals at other Israeli universities as well, but
they are particularly well represented at Ben-Gurion University of the
Negev.

"Israel's Nazification needs no dictatorship since plenty of sturdy little
Hitlers seem to be securely ensconced in a great many number of hearts."
That statement wasn't made by a PLO ideologue or a sermonizing imam on
Al-Jazeera, but by Dr. Neve Gordon of BGU's political science department
(quotations in this article are taken from the new Web site
Israel-Academia-Monitor.com, which gives full documentation).

Gordon has also written: "Israel's gravest danger today is not the PA or
even Hamas and the Islamic Jihad, but the one it faces from within:
fascism." And in a column on the far-Left Counterpunch Web site, he
accused General Aviv Kohavi, currently IDF commander in the Gaza Strip, of
"blatant violations of human rights" and of being a "war criminal."

Not surprisingly, Gordon's articles are often posted on anti-Semitic and
neo-Nazi sites.

Not far behind Gordon in anti-Israeli vilification is Jeff Halper of BGU's
anthropology department, who has written: "'Fortress Israel,' as we call
it, is by necessity based on a culture of strength, violence and crudity.
In the final analysis, it will be the bulldozer that razes the structure
that once was Israel."

Other pearls by this author include: "[Israel is using] state terrorism on
a scale we have not seen before"; and "A just and lasting peace will not
emerge from within Israel; only international pressure can save the
Palestinians from being crushed by the iron wall."

Halper heads IACHD (the Israeli Committee against House Demolitions),
which openly calls for international sanctions against Israel even at a
time when it is preparing for major land concessions.

Then there's Lev Greenberg, director of BGU's Humphrey Institute for
Social Research, who has written:

"There is a difference between Israeli and Palestinian acts of aggression
. the difference is that Israeli aggression is the responsibility of Ariel
Sharon, Benjamin Ben-Eliezer, Shimon Peres, and Shaul Mofaz, while
individual terrorist acts are done by individuals in despair, usually
against Arafat's will"; "Suicide bombings killing innocent civilians must
be condemned unequivocally; they are immoral acts, and their perpetrators
should be sent to jail. But they cannot be compared to state terrorism
carried out by the Israeli government"; "The murder of [Hamas leader]
Sheik Ahmad Yassin by the government of Israel is part of a major move...
which can be described as symbolic genocide."

Other BGU academics portray Israel . which has already made massive land
concessions and offered further ones in a quest for peace, while creating
the Palestinian Authority and helping it become the most generously
assisted entity on earth . as a brutal oppressor and call for its
dissolution as a Jewish state.

Oren Yiftachel of the Department of Geography and Environmental
Development writes: "The actual existence of an Israeli state... can be
viewed as an illusion... Israel has created a colonial setting, held
through violent control"; "The establishment of a binational democratic
state... appears more attractive than ever."

For Amnon Raz-Krakotzkin, who teaches Jewish history, "Binationalism is
the only solution . for now... the Zionist historical consciousness is
based on suppression and the erasure of history"; "there really are Arabs
who accuse me of supporting binationalism in order to preserve the Jewish
people". a charge that, apparently, stings.

A 2004 article called "Genocide by Public Policy," BGU's Michael Dahan
with Palestinian-American businessman Sam Bahour, asserted that:
"Deliberate and systematic destruction, as the definition of genocide
illustrates, does not necessarily mean physical killing of people, albeit
Israel is having no problem, and is facing no international outcry, in
doing just that."

The value of academic freedom, and the need for expression of a wide
variety of views on the problems Israeli faces, is not in question. It is
a different matter whether the taxpayers and donors who fund BGU should
remain indifferent when this university, responsible for educating its
young people, becomes a nest for academics who deny Israel's legitimacy,
advocate its dissolution, call its people Nazis, and accuse it of
genocide.

Even if academic freedom is construed as being unbound by minimal notions
of truth or loyalty, this should not prevent donors from conditioning
their contributions carefully, and potential students and their parents
from taking heed.

Holocaust denier Ernest Zundel is to be deported from Canada and sent back
to Germany, according to a Canadian Federal court ruling.

The court's ruling follows a lengthily legal struggle.

The judge said his ruling was based upon the assumption Zundel's racist
beliefs are not only a threat to Canadian national security, but a threat
to the entire international community too.

For many years Zundel has denied the holocaust existed, claiming the Jews
have mercilessly used it to extort money from the German government.

Holocaust denial punishable by incarceration

Zundel has been living in Canada for the past 40 years. For the past two
years he has been held in solitary confinement in a Toronto prison.

German authorities said they plan to arrest Zundel upon his return to
Germany, on charges of state law violations and denying the Holocaust.

An official German source, who asked to remain anonymous, said they were
also investigating whether Zundel is behind an internet site bearing his
name, which publishes controversial content.

"It will take some time to investigate all the suspected offenses," he
said, explaining that Holocaust denial is a federal offense in Germany and
punishable by incarceration.

Zundels' lawyer Peter Lindsay said he did not expect the deportation to
happen for at least another week or two, to enable him to appeal the
court's decision.

'Zundel is not a pacifist'

The Anti-Deformation League Chairman Abraham Foxman said in response he
hoped the Canadian government would deport Zundel as soon as possible.

"He can no longer hide from his past," Foxman said. "The Canadian court is
correct in its decision, Zundel is not a Pacifist but rather a threat to
society, who exploited Zionism and spread anti-Semitic messages."
