2. Jews Commit Political Hari-Kerry

Where do American Jewish voters go for guidance? Apparently, this year
were heeding advice from Tehran, from the rabidly anti-Semitic former
prime minister of Malaysia and of course from our pals in the
Palestinian Authority.
Sorry, thats a bit of black humor.
What I mean to say is that in one of those ironic twists of fate its
likely that this year a majority of Jewish voters will cast their ballots
for the presidential candidate favored by Israels most implacable enemies.
As I noted in a recent article in Human Events Online, according to The
American Jewish Committees Annual Survey of Jewish Opinion (conducted
between August 18-September 1, 2004), 69% of Jews will vote for Kerry this
year, and only 24% for Bush.
This would be a slight improvement over Bushs share of the Jewish vote in
2000 (19%). And Kerry isnt doing nearly as well with Jewish voters as Gore
in 2000 (79%), Clinton in 1996 (78%) or Clinton in 1992 (80%).
And there are stirrings at the grass roots. In Michigan (with a Jewish
community of 100,000) a group called Jews for George is hard at work. Its
co-founder, Moe Freedman, says theyve mobilized 900 members to hear the
president speak at the Pontiac Silverdome Wednesday evening (October 27th)
Still, given the inveterate liberalism of most American Jews (who believe
Moses was a charter member of Americans United for Separation of Church
and State), a big Jewish vote for Kerry seems inevitable.
Jews for George should start a chapter in Tel Aviv. Unlike their brethren
in the States, Israelis know where their interests lie.
In a poll in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz (published on October 16),
almost twice as many of Israelis said they wanted to see W. re-elected
(50%), as those who were cheering for Kerry (24%).
Its an open secret that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is praying for a Bush
victory. In July, Deputy Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told a group of
prominent American Jews that he personally prefers Bush to Kerry.
For Israelis and their more discerning supporters in this country, it all
comes down to terrorism and security.
When Clinton was president, the White House welcome mat was always out for
Yasser Arafat who practically took up residence in the Lincoln Bedroom.
At Camp David (2000), Clinton pressured then Prime Minister Ehud Barak to
give the wily old terrorist 98% of the West Bank and Gaza, plus East
Jerusalem. That wasnt enough for Arafat, who walked away from a deal and
precipitated four years of murderous jihad.
By contrast, Bush refuses to meet with the man whose organization is still
sworn to the total destruction of Israel. Just months into his first term,
the president decided that Arafat was a cunning killer who would never
abandon violence.
In his 1997 book, The New War, Kerry who has the endorsements of both the
Muslim American PAC and the Arab America PAC spoke glowingly of Arafat as
a "statesman" and "role model." The last is correct. Arafat was
slaughtering civilians as long ago as the 60s, and thus is a prototype for
the current generation of terrorist leaders.
In a November 17, 2003, speech to the Arab American Institute, Kerry
called Israels security barrier, "a barrier to peace." (It is also a great
inconvenience for suicide bombers.) When Jewish leaders complained, the
Senator reversed himself. But his initial reaction was telling.
Kerrys chief Middle East advisor is former U.S. Ambassador to Israel
Martin Indyk, who: 1) Helped devise the disastrous Olso Accords, 2)
Persuaded Clinton that Arafat was a big teddy bear, 3) As ambassador,
called for the division of Jerusalem, 4) At the outset of the latest
Intifada, insisted that Israel to hold back its army to encourage Arafat
(who orchestrated the bloodbath) to deal with the terrorists!, and 5)
Wants to station U.S. forces in the West Bank and Gaza to cover an Israeli
withdrawal.
Little wonder Israeli journalist and FrontPage Magazine columnist David
Bedein writes, "The very mention of Indyk sends shudders down the spine
of senior members of the Israel defense and foreign policy establishment."
Equally troubling is the senators determination to put the survival of
democracies firmly in the hands of the United Nations.
In a recent column, New Republic editor Martin Peretz notes: "Save for the
U.S. veto in the Security Council, Israel loses every struggle at the
U.N.The bodys bloated and dishonest bureaucracies are no better, as
evidenced most recently by the head of the U.N. Palestine refugee
organization, who defended having Hamas on his staff."
Peretz charges: "Ive searched to find one time when Kerry even candidate
Kerry criticized a U.N. action or statement against Israel. Ive come up
empty. Nor has he defended Israel against the European Unions continuous
hectoring."
This past July, in a typical example of the U.N.s blame-the-victims game,
the General Assembly voted 150-to-6 in condemnation, not of Palestinian
suicide bombers, but of Israels attempt to keep them from spreading
body-parts in downtown Jerusalem its security barrier.
Even before he goes running to the U.N., Kerry will seek the wise counsel
of France and Germany (our neglected "allies," the Senator calls them) on
foreign policy questions.
That would be another catastrophe for Israel. Paris and Bonn are puppets
whose strings are pulled in Arab capitals.
France, which is well on its way to becoming a Muslim country (thanks to
immigration from North Africa), quietly tolerates an on-going wave of
anti-Semitic violence. Jews are now the victims in over 80 percent of
bias-related offenses in the land of liberty, equality and fraternity.
And Kerry wants to give the lily-livered Perrier guzzlers of the Elysee
Palace a veto over U.S. foreign policy. Why not vote for Jacques Chirac
for president of the United States, and cut out the middleman?
If it were up Senator Dont-Rush-To-War (wait until the UN, European
Community and Michael Moore decide its necessary), Saddam Hussein would
still be in power cooperating with al-Qaeda, paying bounties to the
families of those who murder Israelis and threatening the Jewish state
with nuclear annihilation when he developed the bomb.
There are, however, exceptions to the yellow-dog Democrat rule among
American Jewish voters.
In a January 9th article in The Forward ("Bolting for Bush"), former New
York Mayor Ed Koch, a life-long Democrat, said hes never voted for a
Republican presidential candidate before, but he was going to vote for
Bush this year. Koch wrote, "President Bush has earned my vote because he
has shown the resolve necessary to wage the war against terrorism."
Even Senator Joe Lieberman (D, Conn.) while he was campaigning for Kerry
in Florida last week, frankly confessed, "We are dealing with a president
whos had a record of strong support for Israel. You cant say otherwise."
Israels enemies understand this, even if many of her friends do not. As
Ben Johnson noted in these pages last week, many pro-terrorist nations
favor John Kerry.
Iran, for one. In June, the Tehran Times editorialized, "Kerry is exactly
what the U.S. needs right now." It means Kerry is exactly what Iran needs
right now a U.S. politician who blindly believes in negotiations with
terrorist states. In a futile effort to deter the mullahs from acquiring
nuclear weapons, the Senator has promised them nuclear fuel, if hes
elected exactly the same strategy that failed Bill Clinton, in regard to
North Koreas nuclear program.
Other thugs are also speaking out for the Democratic ticket.
You may recall former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed, who told
the 10th Islamic Summit last year that "Jews rule the world by proxy. They
get others to fight and die for them." Also, Jews "invented socialism,
communism, human rights and democracy." (Why not monarchy and fascism,
too?)
Bush condemned Mohameds comments as "wrong and divisive." Said the
president, "it stands squarely against what I believe."
Last week, Mohamed put out a letter urging U.S. Moslems to vote for Kerry,
"in the name of Islam." The ex-prime minister exhorted his fellow
jihadists on their "duty to ensure that Bush will not be able to determine
our fate for four more years." Said he, "There is an obvious connection
between the sufferings of the Moslems and the policies and thinking of
Bush."
Mohamed could have saved his breath. According to a Zogby poll, on
November 2, American Moslems will vote for Kerry by a 10-to-1 margin.
Earlier this month, Nabil Shaath ("foreign minister" of the Palestinian
Authority) said that while he thought Bush wanted to resume the so-called
peace process, "with the staff that surrounds him and with his current
opinions, it doesnt look promising."
But, in a Kerry presidency, Shaath gushed, "It would be likely that
several staff members during the Clinton administration would return" and
"that would be a good thing." The PA longs for the halcyon days of
Clintonian appeasement.
Israels chief of military intelligence, Major General Aharon Zeevi says,
"Arafat is now waiting for the month of November in the hope that
President Bush will be defeated in the presidential election and turned
out of office."
So, Arafats Palestinian Authority, the savage anti-Semites of Iran and the
neo-Nazi former prime minister of Malaysia not to mention the valiant
French and the fair-minded Germans all support John Forbes Kerry.
On the other hand, by almost a two-to-one margin, Israelis who are on the
frontlines in the war against terrorism favor Bush, as does the prime
minister they overwhelmingly elected.
In The American Jewish Committee survey mentioned at the outset, 75% of
respondents said they felt "very close" or "fairly close" to Israel. Also,
74% said "Caring about Israel is a very important part of my being a Jew."
Pity most of them will vote with Israels enemies this year. Jews may have
a disproportionate share of Nobel Prizes in physics and chemistry, but
when it comes to political intelligence, we are truly clueless.

9. The Anniversary of the assassination of Rabin has become the Israeli
secularist Holy of Holies. It has become the day in which leftists and
Labor Party hacks lecture the country about how everyone who opposes the
Olso "peace process" and the Left's agenda is collectively guilty of
murdering Rabin and how such people should be denied freedom of speech.
In other words, it has become the official holiday for Israeli Leftist
McCarthyism. This year was no different.
Meanwhile the media are full of warnings about "more Jewish terrorism",
this written by the very people who do not see Tali Fahima and the
far-leftist terrorists and traitors in Israel as any sort of threat. In
nearly 60 years, Israel had one political assassination, by a single
fringe person. Hardly a "wave of Jewish terror". The US has had more
political assassinations of leaders but never adopted broadscale
McCarthyism against dissidents, not even in the McCarthy era, nor attacked
free speech. The "warnings" against "Jewish Terror" are thinly disguised
parts of the campaign against free speech for anti-Oslo dissidents.

1. Quote of the millenium:
Speaking immediately after the Knesset vote to implement the Sharon-Mitzna
capitulation plan for Gaza, Shimon Peres, the godfather of Oslo, was
interviewed on the TV. I am paraphrasing because I was too
catatonically shocked by what he said to get it down word by word.
"A national ballot referendum now would be a catastrophe. After all, the
Knesset today, which approved the plan, is entirely unrepresentative of
the country. Therefore allowing the citizens to vote in a referendum
would be undemocratic because it would block the will of the Knesset."
Really.
2. Now that the Knesset has approved the Gaza First Unilateral
Capitulation Plan of Sharon-Mitzna, by 67 to 45, I would like to make a
modest proposal. The Knesset should now pass a new law requiring that all
Knesset Members who voted in favor of the plan be coerced into moving to
the Negev town of Sderot next to Gaza, together with their entire
extended families, the day after the Sharon-Mitzna plan is implemented.
3. A few months after the Sharon-Mitzna plan is implemented and Sderot
has been erased from the face of the Negev and hundreds of rockets are
hitting Ashkelon, we will be holding a contest to see which journalist or
which politician writes the most convincing article entitled, "But who
could possibly have known that the rocketing of Ashkelon would result from
last year's peace plan?" The First Prize will be a month's free
accomodation in Sderot. The Second Prize will be two months free
accomodation.

7. Redefining the Palestinian Problem

AMERICAN SPECTATOR
TEL AVIV -- The time has come to redefine the conceptual context in which
the plight of Palestinians is perceived. The Palestinians' violent
rejection of the far-reaching Barak initiative underscores that the
chances of reaching a political resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict are highly remote if not totally negligible. On the one hand, it
is difficult to envisage any Israeli leader offering a proposal
substantially more generous than Ehud Barak's; on the other hand, its
unequivocally vicious repudiation by the Palestinians indicates that even
this offer, for all its unprecedented generosity, fell substantially short
of their minimum demands. However, if the Palestinian problem seems
insoluble in the political context, it may well be eminently soluble in
other contexts -- namely the humanitarian one.
Dispassionate analysis of Palestinian behavior for well over the last
half-century strongly supports the "heretical" assertion that the
Palestinians are neither genuinely desirous nor deserving of statehood. In
spite of unstinting international support for their cause (including
strong backing from most influential media organizations, and the
sponsorship of one of the two superpowers during the decades of the Cold
War), the Palestinians have failed miserably in establishing any semblance
of a stable, productive self-governing society or producing any capable,
credible, and competent leadership likely to advance them along the path
towards that goal. Quite the contrary. Well over a decade after having the
generous Oslo Accords virtually thrust upon them by an unprecedented
accommodationist Israeli administration that not only acknowledged their
claims for independence, but actually identified with them, the
Palestinians have done nothing but produce a repressive and regressive
interim regime run by cruel, corrupt thugs who have pillaged their people.
Indeed the Palestinian state has perhaps the unique distinction of
achieving "failed state" status before it was actually established. Thus
by their manifest inability to achieve statehood despite the highly
conducive conditions that prevailed in their favor, the Palestinians
appear to have failed the "test of history"-- thereby casting severe doubt
as to whether they are worthy of such statehood.
BUT EVEN IF ONE is convinced that the Palestinians are undeserving of a
state, the question still remains as to whether they are genuinely
desirous of one. In this regard, there are two competing -- indeed
antithetical -- hypotheses by which to explain the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict and the motivations behind it. According to the first of these
hypotheses, the fuel of the conflict is the lack of Palestinian
self-determination, and all that the Palestinians aspire to is the
establishment of their own state. There is however an alternative
explanation, whereby the fuel of the conflict is not the lack of
Palestinian self-determination but the existence of Jewish
self-determination, and that as long as Jewish self-determination
persists, so will the conflict. Moreover, according to this alternative
explanation, the goal of the Palestinians is not to establish a state for
themselves but to dismantle a state for others -- the Jews. Any
fair-minded analysis of Palestinian deeds and declarations show them to be
far more consistent with the latter hypothesis, casting serious doubt as
to the genuine nature of their intentions and the authenticity of their
desire for statehood.
The generally accepted Palestinian narrative has been the major force not
only for the propagation of the Palestinian claims for statehood but also
for much of the international acrimony directed against Israel.
Accordingly, the de-legitimization of this narrative is essential to the
serious exploration of other avenues of solution. But even if the
Palestinian narrative is de-legitimized, Palestinian political aspirations
are discredited, and the issue of Palestinian state removed from the
international agenda, the problem of the Palestinian humanitarian
predicament still must be addressed.
This is a problem that can conceivably be dealt with by means of money --
specifically generous sums paid to the Palestinians to relocate and
resettle elsewhere in the Arab/Moslem world. Such compensation should be
the equivalent of lifetime earnings in any appropriate host country in
Asia or Africa -- i.e., the GDP per capita of such a country multiplied by
at least 50-100 years. This would entail a grant of US$ 100,000 -150,000
to each family unit.
In fact the cost of such a proposal compares favorably with other more
conventional alternatives involving Israeli withdrawal and attempts at
Palestinian self rule -- most of which have proved to be unproductive if
not indeed counterproductive. The sums required for the humanitarian
resettlement of the entire Palestinian population in countries with a
similar/familiar socio-religious environment would be significantly less
than those already spent by the U.S. on the Iraq War. It would thus be
easily affordable to the international community -- especially if it were
spread out over a number of years. Indeed, given Israel's current level of
GDP, it would not be a ruinous burden even if the country were to bear it
alone.
ANY PROPOSAL CALLING for the relocation and resettlement of the
Palestinians outside the confines of Judea, Samaria, and Gaza will
inevitably raise the question of its feasibility. To be sure, it is likely
to be rejected vehemently by formal Palestinian organizations, which must
therefore be by-passed. The problem should be "atomized" by making the
offer of compensation on an individual basis directly to Palestinian
bread-winners each of whom would then be faced with three alternatives:
(i) reject the offer and remain under continued Israeli control; (ii)
reject the offer and live under a dysfunctional Palestinian regime --
which has proved more onerously repressive than the Israelis'; (iii)
accept the offer of a relocation grant equivalent to a life-time of
earnings in an alternative country of residence, facilitating the chance
of a new life for himself and his/her family.
If reason prevails at the individual level, there is little doubt which
choice would be the most attractive. Note that the implementation of the
scheme is not contingent on a negotiated agreement with an official
Palestinian organ, but on the rational choice of individual families.
The proposed solution would also involve considerable benefits to the host
countries accepting the resettled Palestinians, as it would bring with it
a considerable -- and sorely needed -- influx of capital to their ailing
economies. This would make the proposed endeavor a "win-win" measure for
all concerned -- the individual Palestinians, the State of Israel, and the
host nations -- except of course for the cruel and corrupt Palestinian
leadership.

Sir, In an otherwise masterful analysis of the dilemmas of the Masorti
movement in Israel there was one inaccuracy. You stated that while Reform
and Orthodoxy had at one time active anti-Zionism in their policies,
Conservative Judaism was the first to accept Zionism. Not quite.
While Solomon Schechter, who had a twin brother living in the Yishuv in
the '20s, was avidly pro-Zionist, some of his successors in the leadership
of the movement were either non- or anti-Zionist. It is also true that the
movement built the Yeshurun synagogue, which is now Orthodox. But Cyrus

There is a legend many insist it is true that at the graduation ceremony

King David St. by many years and is much smaller and less imposing.

movement should logically be popular here, and 53 congregations is a great
achievement.
But the leftist orientation you observed does impede the total
identification with fervent religion and Zionism necessary to make the
Masorti movement a really flourishing one in this country.

1. The Beilinization of the Likud is now complete. Yesterday the Likud
government cabinet ministers voted in favor of the Mitzna capitulation
plan for Gaza, in which Gaza will be turned over to the Islamofascist
terrorists and its entire Jewish population expelled. The vote was 13 to
6. Netanyahu and his people voted in FAVOR of the plan. There will be no
national referendum.
The Likud showed its contempt for its own voters, who rejected the
same plan last spring by 60% to 40%. Those expecting Netanyahu to be
"rewarded" by Sharon, who promised to support Netanyahu's structural
reforms of the economy as quid pro quo for Netanyahu endorsing Sharon's
"plan", should not hold their breath. The plan will evict the entire
Jewish population of the Gaza Strip. There will be no offsetting movement
of Arabs. The plan does not, for example, specify that the entire
population of Jenin will be moved to the Gaza Strip as part of the
lowering of confrontation and tension in the Middle East.

to try to sue the Palestinian Authority in Israeli courts and place liens
on PLO funds. But the PLO now has a new White Knight who is protecting it
from all such moves to place attachments and liens against its wampum.
The White Knight is the leftist Attorney General of Israel appointed by
Sharon but a longtime associate of Beilin, Manny Mazuz (Haaretz Oct 25).

Tel Aviv University's Paul Wexler is the father of the "theory" holding
that Yiddish is a slavic
and not Germanic language - a "theory" whose value is gar nichts, and that
modern Hebrew is derived from slavic Yiddish and hence is unrelated to
Biblical Hebrew. Wexler's "theories" have been widely cited by anti-Semites,
neonazis, and Islamists, such as at

I do not have time to formulate a well-motivated letter to send to the
editors of the Yale Alumni Magazine (where I read about you), but I would
like to offer my support for your efforts. As an American national
resident in Israel since 1969 I have watched with dismay and horror the
aggressive behavior of the Israeli government in the occupied Palestinian
lands for over 30 years. I fear that Israel will probably only end its
illegal occupation-cum-annexation by strong international economic

Dear YAM,
Regarding the campus debate on eliminating Yale's investments in Israel
and whether or not Israel is an apartheid state: As an American who has
lived in Israel for 34 years, I have watched with horror the gradual
transformation of Israel into a classic racist state with German
Lebensraum goals. Israel presently occupies all of British-mandated
Palestine; on this territory Jews have full rights in practice, Israeli
Arabs have full right rights in theory and Palestinian Arabs have no
rights. Is this not apartheid? The suggestion to divest Yale of its
Israeli investments is, regretably, the only moral course of action left,
though, at this stage, it may be an academic issue since the Israeli
economy is rapidly self-destructing on its own. But divestment from Israel
is not enough. The USA has bought into Sharon's line that Arafat = bin
Laden and both states ignore, at their own peril, that Israeli state
terrorism (i.e. occupation) begets Arab terrorist responses. America has
long abandoned its own principles and best interests in favor of support
for Sharon and his predecessors, Arab dictators such as Mubarak and the
only 2 countries named after personal family dynasties (the Hashemite
Kingdom of Jordan and Saudi Arabia) and (until recently) Saddam Hussein.
So, if one recommends divestment from Israel, one must sadly also
recommend divestment from America to European and Asian investors.

wrote that "Beilin and his friends want to displace tens of thousands of
their brothers and hand over to the Palestinians all that is sacred to
us."
MK Ophir Pines-Paz (Labor) appealed to Attorney General Menachem Mazuz to
open an investigation against the rabbis and the newspaper on suspicion of
inciting against the organizers of the Geneva Initiative and legitimizing
violence against them.
The reply from Deputy Attorney General Malkhiel Blass, on Mazuz's behalf,
surprised Pines. The deputy AG ruled that even though the term is
unseemly,
"there is difficulty viewing the term `traitors' as being in itself a
criminal offense." Blass added that Israelis who reach an understanding
with
a group of Palestinians regarding the way to solve the conflict between
the
two peoples are none other than provocateurs.
Yesterday, Pines wrote to Mazuz that "it seems that the law enforcement
system internalized nothing since Rabin's murder [...] With the next
assassination you won't be able to claim to have clean hands."
Pines voiced surprise that the deputy attorney general had insinuated that
the initiators of the Geneva Initiative are to blame for the incitement
against them. He pointed out that the Geneva understandings were meant to
stop the occupation and end the conflict.
Yossi Beilin could hardly believe his ears when asked to comment. Beilin,
who worked alongside Mazuz and Balas when he was justice minister, said
that
in view of his close acquaintance with both men, he has trouble believing
that they signed such a letter, both from a public and a legal standpoint.
"I hope that the attorney general will apologize for the letter and
substitute for it an appropriate reply," Beilin said.

Meretz MK Ran Cohen considers them to be "black ants".
Journalist Amnon Dankner thinks of them as dogs, "tied up in the yard and
barking Psalms all night long".
Tour guide Sefi Ben-Yosef sees them as "a humming collection of locusts".
Poet Moshe Dor pictures them as "the dark forces of our era".
Columnist Amnon Avramovicz maintains that they are "a death-causing
plague".
Commentator Natan Donevitz imagines them as "black swarms".
Yoel Marcus, author and newspaperman, knows they are "black forces" and
"soul snatchers".
Playwright Yosef Mondey opines that they are "rude baboons".
The now defunct Marxist daily, Al HaMishmar, the mouthpiece of the Mapam
party, held them to be "barbarians...the black front...representing the
most mystical, magical, primitive urge...their schools are institutes of
darkness".
Gideon Sammet, journalist and former diplomat, knows they are "the most
obscurantist and ugly phenomena of our time".
Shulamit Aloni, former Education Minister and progressive politician, is
convinced they are "bloodsuckers...snakes...suckling from the most darkest
urges that the Nazi horror suckled from. They are greedy, domineering,
evil and primitive, immoral, parasitical and power-hungry".
Uri Avnery, media person, sees them as "bloodsuckers".
Meretz MK Professor Naomi Chazan "a terrible evil...a black genie".
Acclaimed writer Amos Oz "armed groups of gangsters, criminals against
humanity, sadists, pogromists and murderers...".
(All the quotations appeared in newspapers and other periodicals except
for the words of Shulamit Aloni which were spoken in the Knesset Chamber).
And so on and so forth. The "they" are, of course, the Charedim. The
religious, and more specifically, the more observant Jews, termed
ultra-orthodox.
All the above-mentioned personalities belong to what is known in Israel as
the "intellectual elite of the Israeli Left". They include authors,
members of Knesset, senior journalists and professors from the academia.
These are the peace camp, the camp of the progressives, the liberals and
the pluralists, who indulge themselves daily in the values of democracy
and tolerance. The principle of "the solidarity of man and his equality"
is the essence of their spiritual and intellectual existence.
It is well-known that there is no more horrible term of notoriety for them
than that of "racism" which belongs solely to the "vengeful and low-browed
nationalism" (Yaakov Sharret) and the "dark nationalist clericalism"
(Aloni) in their own words.
It is unnecessary to state that there isnt a group of people in the whole
wide world against which these aforementioned humanists would dare to cast
even the minimum amount of derision and scornful slander which they save
to be used scurrilously against a section of their own people. Too, it
would be unthinkable that in a democratic state anywhere that even the
most vicious of antisemites would have the nerve to utter any expression
that would equal the racial hatred of Israelis in their own country.
The most outlandish phrase that any public official used against Jews and
their religion was the black Nation of Islam leader, Lewis Farrakhan, when
he related disparagingly to the Jews of New York and termed their faith a
"gutter religion". Following the outcry over his remarks, Farrakhan
retracted in a fashion and stammered out an apology of sorts. The
television personality and journalist, Patrick Buchanan, has for years
propounded an anti-Israel position. He claims that he opposes the
"destructive influence of the Jews in the media". Buchanan repels any
charge of antisemitism but he has not succeeded in convincing anyone.
These two statements classify him in America as possessing unmitigated
anti-Jewish opinions.
Nevertheless, the one fundamental difference that exists between Farrakhan
and Buchanan and the antisemitism of the Israeli "humanist camp" is the
racism that is solely a blue-and-white product. The intention of this
essay is to explore this element.
THE JEWISH PARASITE
One of the most damaging of Israeli antisemitic slogans, which recalls
Nazi propaganda and actually replicates it, is the comparison of Charedim
to parasites, blood-suckers of the secular community. The terms "parasite"
and "blood-suckers" have so deeply embedded themselves into the
consciousness of sections of the secular community that the metaphor, at a
certain point, has merited a scientific explanation. It has become real.
When Uri Avnery wrote that "tens of thousands of Yeshiva students are
parasites, sucking the blood of the country" (1), one could relate to the
phrase, extreme as it is, as allegorically. After all, there were those
who termed members of the kibbutz movement "parasites" following their
economic disaster and the transfer of huge sums of public funds to cover
their losses. In the same fashion, one could explain away Chaim Beers
statement that "they [the religious] grew up as a do-nothing parasite"
(2).
However, when Shulamit Aloni posits that "the Charedim are
leeches...sitting on us as parasites, drinking our blood literally
...actually shedding our blood..." (3), this, as Ms. Aloni admits, is
plainly a blood-libel. Otherwise, why would she emphasize her words by
adding "literally" and "actually"? It might be plausible to presume that
Aloni really doesnt believe what she is saying but, nevertheless, she
utilizes antisemitic language reminiscent of the "Black Hundreds" and
Julius Streicher. Its use illustrates the burning hatred that causes this
matron to lose her sense of mental balance.
The proof of this in-built parasitism amongst Charedim was undertaken by
one Professor Yitzhak Ginzburg, who calls himself an "expert on infectious
diseases". Ginzburg, who, in his own words, is a "researcher and has for
years dealt with the scientific aspects of the inter-related links that
exist between parasites and their carriers regarding diseases" has found
an "amazing similarity" between the behavior of parasites and "what occurs
in the Knessets hallways and its committees" (4).
In his article, Ginzburg explains:
"The parasite...is a living organism that has lost its ability to produce
of itself the materials of its food and therefore it makes efforts to
achieve them by imputation from the carrier. The parasite, which makes no
contribution to the well-being, benefit and defense of the carrier, is not
interested in destroying its carrier. At times, though, in its parasitical
exuberance, it may go beyond its normal patterns and will deplete its
carrier of resources and even destroy it. The course of
parasitism...depends on the complacency of the carrier which does not
adequately respond to the parasite at the first stages of the connection.
The carrier, finally recognizing the parasites existence, attempts to
apply its defense mechanism but in many instances, it is already too
late".
In order to strangle the "development of the infectious disease" in its
infancy, Ginzburg requests that "every caring person in our state, that
is, the carriers, should oppose...the parasites...who suck the bone-marrow
of our country and push it to the edge of the precipice".
The public relates to such local weeklies as Kol HaIr, which combine a
left-wing radicalism with soft porn, in an indifferent and lenient manner.
However, it is another matter when HaAretz , which presumes to be Israels
outstanding daily, publishes an op-ed article from one Zeev Fabian, in
which he describes how his eyes were opened:
"to understand that the Israeli Jews are in the midst...of a war of
existence...the process [of the taking over of the state by religion]...is
becoming an ugly wave threatening to sink all of us in a new destruction
of Betar. They [the Charedim] do not need a state but a carrier that would
feed their parasitism, and when the carrier is enfeebled, or ceases to
exist, they will transfer to a new carrier [and this is the essence of]
the unholy covenant between the extreme nationalism and the fanatic
orthodoxy". (5)

The ACLU's decision to reject $1 million from the Ford and Rockefeller
foundations was the right thing to do -- but for the wrong reason. At
issue is the foundations' caveat that grant recipients not "promote or
engage in violence, terrorism, bigotry, or the destruction of any state."
"Bigotry"? That's not even speech; it's thought. Protecting bigotry is how
the ACLU made its name. Remember the Nazis in Skokie? But the current ACLU
leadership, bowing to political correctness, barely raises an eyebrow at
the restriction against bigotry. Instead, they point to the prohibition
against terrorism, which it characterized as "vague" and "ill advised."
Now this is where things really get interesting. According to a New York
Times report this week, ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero advised the
Ford folks to adopt the definition of terrorism in the -- brace yourself
-- Patriot Act, legislation the ACLU has always railed against. What Mr.
Romero seems to understand is that the definition in the Patriot Act is
narrower than the prior definition of international terrorism, as criminal
activities that involve "violent acts or acts injurious to human life."
Congress recognized that "violent acts" may sweep too broadly to include
protest activities protected by the First Amendment. So it limited the
definition to live up to the letter and spirit of the Constitution.
Baseless, therefore, are ACLU claims that WTO or abortion protests may
come to constitute "terrorism." These are protected by the Constitution
and unaffected by the Patriot Act's terrorism definition. Terrorism arises
only when protest is linked with a criminal act, e.g. murder. So to turn
down money on grounds that it would blunt the ACLU's ability to defend a
right to "protest" is specious.
But a donor's curb on "bigotry"? Now that's different.
Mr. Dinh, a Georgetown law professor, was assistant attorney general for
Legal Policy from 2001 to 2003.

In August 2001, I published an article in Haaretz dealing with the
political and ideological use that Europe does in comparisons between
Israel and the Nazis. Inter alia, I argued that Germany, which cannot make
such comparisons herself, provides financial support to every Israeli
entity that makes such comparisons. By way of an example, I mentioned
Professor Moshe Zimmermann, who, several weeks earlier, in a letter to
"Musaf S'farim" (book supplement) of Haaretz, likened the Eichmann Trial
to the burning down of the Reichstag trials that the Nazis staged.
Zimmermann then sued Haaretz and myself for libel. The suit was repelled,
and Zimmermann has appealed the ruling. In her ruling, Justice Yehudit
Shevakh determined that Zimmermann has indeed received support from German
sources, and that he has indeed likened Nazi entities to Israeli entities.
Based on the evidence, the judge also found that Zimmermann has admitted
to doing so.
Several weeks before the court ruling was handed down, the erstwhile head
of the Berlin Jewish Community, Dr. Alexander Brenner, received a letter
from Prof. Zimmermann, typed on Hebrew University stationary, which read:
"On January 27, 2004, you referred (on the Israeli Broadcasting Service)
to professors of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who likened the
conduct of the SS troops to that of Israeli soldiers. I was also informed
by other sources that you have made similar statements in other contexts.
Since the faculty of the Hebrew University might infer that you were
alluding to me ... I must demand of you to either apologize for your
allusions in writing to the Rector of the Hebrew University, or to
explicitly name the professors to whom your expression referred.
Brenner ignored Zimmermann's demand, but then received a letter from
Professor Haim Rabinowitch, Rector of the Hebrew University [in Israel, a
rector is a faculty elected provost]. In his letter Rabinowitch wrote. "In
consultation with the Hebrew University legal counsel, we drafted a short
sentence that suggests an apology, Words were said in error, without an
intent to harm any of the Hebrew University Professors. I hereby apologize
before the Rector for any offense, if committed, against any of the
professors of the University ". Brenner declined to respond.
An assault of Zimmermann on Brenner is likely to increase even more the
formers popularity in Germany. The German public is often angered by the
leaders of the German Jewish community, who protest displays of
anti-Semitism, and who criticize the Germans' propensity to gloss over
their nation's history, preferring to try and present it as victim rather
than perpetrator.
But the grave matter in this case is the behavior of the Hebrew University
Rector. There have been past protests over Zimmermann's proclamations,
and, for that matter, over Professor Van Krevelds vulgar, sexist
declarations. However the University itself abstained from intervening,
citing freedom of expression and academia.
But are only boorish anti-Semites and sexists entitled to freedom of
speech? Should a Jewish leader, who has fought anti-Semitism, including
the kind that Jewish professors inflame, be apprehensive of maltreatment
by the Hebrew University? Can the universities absolve themselves of
censoring venomous expressions of Israeli academics against Israel on
account of academic freedom, and simultaneously also muster their
authority to silence their own critics?
The Hebrew University Rector's letter is a disgrace to Israeli academe and
yet another manifestation of its moral bankruptcy.

The Hebrew University response: The letter stems from a misunderstanding.
The Rector surmised, in light of information that he received, that Dr.
Alexander Brenner was interested in apologizing to professors of the
Hebrew University. Therefore, a wording of a letter was suggested to
Brenner to enable him to retract his comprehensive accusation against
them. Post factum, the Rector thinks that there was no room for his
intervention in this matter.

Israel, has a definition for the rabbis of the hesder yeshivas and the
pre-military academies in the territories who are calling for rebellion
against the prime minister: "an armed Jewish militia that lives at the
public's expense." He told Haaretz yesterday that an unproductive group of
people is pooling all its resources to forcibly impose an ideology rooted
in ancient texts on the silent majority, which supports leaving Gaza.
Michael understands the Hamas members who are fighting these Jews, who
stuck a wedge down their throats. In an interview published in the latest
issue of New Horizons, a monthly on society and the state published by the

that's also true of the Likud: Everyone is equal in nationalism, the door

Israeli left is hopeless and always was," says Michael, who was a member
of the Jewish-Arab communist underground in Iraq. "It never connected with
the common classes of Jewish society the way the Likud did with its
messages. It did connect with the poor Arab classes and promised to
satisfy their nationalist desires. The Israeli left is elitist, not
revolutionary, and it didn't emerge from the grass roots. Its parents were
communists, and they became communist because they were communists in
Poland and Hungary and continued it here."

Kerry's gay ploy backfires

The third Bush-Kerry debate may not change the outcome of the presidential
election in November. But it may well be remembered as a milestone in the
struggle for gay equality and acceptance. Give the credit for that to John
Kerry.
Toward the end of the debate, moderator Bob Schieffer asked both
candidates if they believed homosexuality was a choice. President Bush
said he didn't know. Kerry said that it is inborn, and cited an authority
on the subject. "I think if you talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a
lesbian, she'll say she is being who she was, she's being who she was born
as," he said.
Why Cheney's daughter? Kerry knows lots of famous people who believe - as
he says Mary Cheney believes - that they were born gay. He could have
cited Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank or New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey.
Both are public men who could offer personal testimony about the inborn
nature of homosexuality.
But that wasn't the point Kerry wanted to make. He was crying Mary to send
a message to presumably homophobic Christian voters: Just in case you
hadn't heard, the vice president harbors a practicing lesbian in the bosom
of his family.
Despite Kerry's angel-faced sanctimony, this was a piece of premeditated
gay-baiting (John Edwards used the same gambit in his debate with Cheney)
whose transparent purpose was to keep some of the GOP's evangelical voters
from turning out on Nov. 2. This was a miscalculation.
Since the debate, the Christian right has been rallying to the side of
Mary Cheney. Well-known political preachers like Jerry Falwell and James
Dobson have gone out of their way to defend her right to privacy.
Conservative radio talk shows and Web sites have been flooded with
denunciations of Kerry and support for Mary.
This reaction doesn't mean that the evangelical community has changed its
doctrine, or its mind, on the sinful nature of homosexuality. It does
reveal, however, that most born-again Protestants are not nearly as
extreme - or as politically one-dimensional - as Kerry evidently imagined
them to be.
Why this should come as a surprise to the Democratic candidate is a
mystery. Kerry knows from his own experience that many practicing
Catholics habitually vote for pro-choice candidates, even if they have
been specifically warned by their priests that doing so would be a sin. In
Massachusetts and around the country, Catholic liberals vote as liberals,
not as Catholics.
The same is true of Jews. Israel is at war, and Bush is the strongest ally
it has ever had in the White House. Ariel Sharon has done everything to
communicate this short of singing "God Bless America" at the Republican
convention. And still the majority of American Jewish Zionists will vote
for Kerry. Why? Because they are liberal Democrats first, and politics
trumps religion.
The same is true for evangelical conservatives. Would they prefer for Mary
Cheney to be a happily married mother of five? Sure. Do they think she is
a sinner? Probably. Will that keep them from voting for Bush and her
father? Heck, no.
Politically, Kerry won't benefit from playing the Mary card. But that
doesn't mean he hasn't accomplished something of value. Many conservative
Christians are for the first time publicly embracing an avowed homosexual.
This puts them in touch with their real priorities and values - including
that cardinal Kerry virtue, nuance.
Mary Cheney may be gay, but it turns out there are worse things. At least
she isn't a Democrat.

While he would not directly endorse Kerry, it was clear Erekat was
implying the PA wants a change in White House leadership: "If things
continue the way they are, if certain policies toward our region are
maintained in the years to come, there is going to be a lot of violence on
both sides."
A prominent Arafat aide who asked that his name be withheld spoke to
WorldNetDaily from Arafat's battered Ramallah compound.
"The president [Arafat] is frustrated with Bush's policies," he said. "The
president [Arafat] thinks Kerry will be much better for the Palestinian
cause and for the establishment of a Palestinian state."
Also today, PA Foreign Minister Nabil Shaath said the future of the
Israeli-Palestinian peace process is unsure if George W. Bush is
re-elected to office, and he complained the U.S. presidential election was
stalling the Middle East peace process.
"During an American election and the three months after, allies of the
United States should do more work than they would do otherwise." Shaath
told a news conference.
While the comments mark the first time the PA has endorsed Kerry on the
record, it has not been a secret that Arafat is frustrated with Bush's
leadership.
Israel Military Intelligence Chief Maj. Gen. Aharon Ze'evi has warned
Arafat is biding his time until November, when the Palestinian leader
hopes President Bush will be voted out of office and Ariel Sharon's
coalition government will fall.
"Arafat is waiting for November in the hope George Bush will lose the
election to John Kerry," Ze'evi told Army Radio in July. "He also hopes
that the Israeli government will fall, so he can take center stage
diplomatically."
Since 2002, Washington has fully backed Jerusalem's decision to isolate
the Palestinian Authority president, who Sharon says is directly involved
in planning terrorism and is an obstacle to peacemaking.
Many Israeli and American Jewish leaders have been expressing concern that
a Kerry administration will cause more violence in the Middle East and
could bring Arafat back to power. They say they are worried about Kerry's
statements of coordinating American foreign policy with the Europeans,
some of whom favor talks with Arafat, and are disturbed by Kerry's
appointment of several former Clinton Mideast policy directors as
advisers, particularly former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk.
Many blame Clinton's failed approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
which sought Israeli territorial concessions for promises of peace by
Arafat and ignored indications of growing Palestinian militancy and
violations of security-reform agreements for partially causing the
current intifada.
Indyk, who helped devise the 1993 Oslo Accords, was a driving force behind
Clinton's assessment of Arafat as a statesman and urged Clinton to accept
Arafat as the legitimate ruler of the Palestinians. Under Indyk's
advisory, Arafat visited the White House during the Clinton administration
24 times, more than any other world leader during those eight years.

Dear Sir,
Re: The Investigation of My Client Ms. Nadia Matar, on Suspicion of
Committing the Offense of Insulting a Public Servant, Section 288 of the
Penal Code, 1977
In the name of my client, Ms. Nadia Matar, I address you as follows:
1. On October 5, 2004, my client was interrogated in the Moriah police
station in Talpiot, Jerusalem, on suspicion of committing the above
offense, upon your instructions. Let it immediately be said that it would
have been preferable not to summon her rather than summon her for this
interrogation, since the very order to open an investigation is a foolish
and unreasonable attempt to cause the stifling of opinions and an improper
and illegal limitation of the freedom of expression of the activists of
the national-Zionist-patriotic camp activists who are struggling against
the plan for the deportation of some 10,000 Jewish pioneers - who have
been giving their lives (literally, as well) - since the beginning of the
Oslo war (the "shameful deportation plan"), all in order to hold onto the
soil of the homeland.
2. The purpose of Section 288 of the Penal Code, 1977 ("Section 288") is
to prevent, by means of a criminal sanction, a situation in which a
citizen who requires the services of a public servant and is dissatisfied
with the response that he received will, in response, curse that public
servant. And similarly, a situation in which a police officer writes some
report against someone, and the latter rudely insults the officer, and
the like, Section 288 is for this end, and for this end alone.
The purpose of Section 288 is in no way to serve as a tool in the
hands of the State Attorney's Office and the police to intervene, and
certainly not in a selective and discriminatory manner, in any public
debate, including that which has arisen concerning the shameful
deportation plan.
3. Furthermore, the letter by my client comprises trenchant and legitimate
criticism of the very willingness of Yonatan Basi - who, like most of the
pioneers of Gush Katif, wears a kippah [skullcap, i.e., is religious] and
therefore the governmental circles are so happy over his services - to
carry out the shameful deportation plan.
4. The comparison of Yonatan Basi's deeds to those of the Judenrat during
the Holocaust period, based on the clear context in the letter by my
client, was intended solely to denounce Yonatan Basi's willingness to
collaborate, and willingly so, with the government in the implementation
of the shameful deportation plan. Needless to say, in every society that
presumes to be free, it is the right of every person to denounce in a
strong and blunt manner those like Yonatan Basi who are willing to take
upon themselves the implementation of such disgraceful deeds that the
implementation of the shameful deportation plan entails.
5. The intervention of the government in such matters by means of the
State Attorney's Office and the police, with the aim of incriminating one
who makes use of such a basic and understandable right, teaches nothing of
the criminality of the act, but rather of the "short fuse" of the rulers
and those who do their bidding, as regards their ability to contend with
legitimate criticism. And it should be stressed, once again: the
comparison of Basi's deeds with those of the Judenrat bears no connection
with the "insulting of a public servant."
6. Now here, it was specifically the "founding fathers," first and
foremost Chaim Weizmann and David Ben-Gurion, who poisoned the public
debate in the Land of Israel and in the Zionist movement - already
beginning in the period before the establishment of the State [of Israel]
-with their repeated and despicable comparison of Zeev Jabotinsky and
Menachem Begin, of blessed memory, not to those who, like the Judenrat,
aided the Nazis, but to the Nazis themselves, and especially to Adolf
Hitler, may his memory be blotted out.
a. Chaim Weizmann, the President for decades of the Zionist movement and
the first President of the State of Israel, repeatedly uttered the
despicable and false expression that "Revisionism [that is, the Jabotinsky
movement - Y. S.] is comparable to Hitlerism in its worst form."
b. Ben-Gurion, in his contemptible language, constantly applied to the
head of Betar, Zeev [Vladimir] Jabotinsky, the base epithet: "Vladimir
Hitler."
c. In his well-known wickedness, Ben-Gurion said of Menachem Begin, the
leading and most talented of the disciples of the head of Betar, that:
"Menachem Begin is a clearly Hitleristic type, and if he were to rule in
Israel, he would rule as Hitler did in Germany and forcefully and cruelly
repress the worker's movement." All the quotations are from p. 25 of the
book by Tom Segev, Ha-Milyon ha-Shevi'i.
It need not be recalled that, almost every day over the course of
fifty years, Menachem Begin, of blessed memory, was constantly called a
fascist by all the elements of the leftist camp; and, as is known, Nazism
is an integral part of fascism.
And now, in an environment in which the "culture" of debate is as
detailed above, there is clear political persecution in the summoning of
my client to a criminal investigation for the use of such a relatively
neutral term as Judenrat in regard to Yonatan Basi.
7. Finally, the selective enforcement of the law is a phenomenon of
unequaled severity, and how much more so when the selectivity ensues from
invalid political considerations.
Attached is an extremely partial list of statements by Flaviuses
of Edomite descent [a reference to Josephus, i.e., traitors] from the
media, academia, and the arts, in comparison with which the statements by
my client regarding Yonatan Basi are completely neutral.
a. During the course of the Lebanon War, Prof. Leibowitz, making use of
the sewer language of which he was fond, called IDF soldiers
"Judeo-Nazis."
b. Prof. Moshe Zimmerman polluted the air a number of years ago when he
said that the children of the renewers of the Jewish community in Hebron
- who hold on to the City of the Patriarchs by their fingernails - are
like the "Hitlerjugend."
c. The retired Stalinist Prof. Harsegor published an article in Haaretz -
to be precise, it would be preferable to translate its name into Arabic -
in which he asserted that "the leaders of the ultra-Orthodox are the
enemies of democracy, no less than the blackshirts or the heads of the
Nazis in Germany."
d. Shulamit Aloni, who is totally identified with Arafat and his gang,
soiled the pages of the Maariv newspaper at the end of 2002 when she wrote
that: "Eli Yishai acted in accordance with the Nuremberg Laws when he was
the Interior Minister," and, relating to a PR film of the Shas [political
party], she wrote in the same article that "this reminds me of a Nazi
propaganda film."
e. A gutter rag by the name of Kidmah ["Progress"!] informed its readers
in January 2003 that: "A general statement may be made of the ideological
settlers, that they are much worse than any neo-Nazi in Austria."
f. Gen. [Res.] Shlomo Gazit spoke obscenely a number of years ago when he
said that: "there is a resemblance between the knitted-kippah-wearing IDF
soldiers and the SS symbol on the Nazi uniforms."
g. In 1988 the anti-Semitic scoundrel Yigal Tomarkin dragged a pig to
Malkhei Yisrael Square, and wrapped it in tefilin.
We need not burden anyone with needless words: none of these
good-for-nothings were placed on trial. The reason for that is as simple
as can be: we are dealing with a band of the wicked, each of whom belongs
to the Flavius-of-Edomite-descent camp, and they therefore enjoy
"immunity" from being placed on trial. The State Attorney's Office
explains this "immunity" by means of diverse and strange excuses, that
change from time to time, but always remain within the realm of excuses
lacking any real basis.
8. And last of all, Section 288, for which my client is under
investigation, on the basis of your order, is one of the less serious
sections in the Penal Code. This is an offense that is in the lower level
of offenses of a minor type; despite this, with such great alacrity - and
out of the desire (that will not succeed) of instilling my client with
fear - you issued an order to investigate her. In contrast, the most
serious offense under the Penal Code is that under Section 97 of the law.
This offense is the first in para. 2 of part 2 of the Penal Code, that is
entitled "Treason," in both senses of the word.
According to this section: "Whoever acts intentionally to harm the
sovereignty of the State, [performing] an act that harms its sovereignty,
is punishable by death or life imprisonment."
Together with Sections 98 and 99 of the Penal Code, these are the
only sections in Israeli law - with the exception of the Law for Imposing
Justice on Nazis - for which the specified punishment is death.
Not a day passes in which the heads of the Flavius gang who are
signatories to the traitorous writ called the "Geneva Accords" are not
interviewed by their supporters in the electronic and printed private and
state media, in order to publicly disseminate the criminal "accords."
These understandings are headed by the giving over of what is holy to
Israel in united Jerusalem, that is entirely under Israeli sovereignty, to
the murderous gangs of Arafat, the Hamas, and the like.
Although this is an act of treason, not only from the Jewish moral
aspect - "If I forget you, O Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its
cunning" [Psalms 137:5] - but also by the law in force in Israel, none of
the above - Beilin, Lipkin-Shahak, Nehamah Ronen, and their accomplices -
have as yet been investigated, and certainly not placed on trial, for the
seeming public and deliberate commission of the most serious of the
offenses in the Penal Code, that is, the offense of treason.
9. As the above collection clearly indicates, any objective observer from
the side will likely receive the impression that my client is being
persecuted by the State Attorney's Office solely because of her
Zionist-national-patriotic world view, that is not viewed favorably by the
top echelon of the State Attorney's Office, most of whose senior officials
are, as is common knowledge, situated kilometers to the left of center as
regards their political world view.
10. Accordingly, it would be proper for you to immediately issue an order
to shelve the investigation concerning my client. Even if this shall not
be done, my client has agreed with me to inform you this would be a vain
thought that her summons to the interrogation rooms of the police, on the
order of the State Attorney's Office, would deter her from continuing in
the holy work that she has done for many years, for the people of Israel's
maintaining its hold of all parts of Eretz Israel.

2. The Hebron Market

MK Zahava Galon (Meretz) asked why Jewish trespassers have not been =
expelled from the Arab wholesale market in Hebron. The deputy defense =
minister answered that the present sensitive situation in Hebron does =
not permit it, for the moment.
To innocent listeners, who are upset at the fact that Arabs have been =
displaced from their property, I address this commentary.
The market was part of the "Avraham Avinu" Quarter until the 1929 =
pogrom. I took a blood sample from this event, in the way of a =
memorandum presented to the British high commissioner by Hebron's =
community: ". the Rabbis, Meir Kastel, 68 years old, and Tzvi Drabkin, =
70 years old, and five other young men . were robbed, castrated, =
tortured and murdered.The baker, Noah Immerman was roasted alive on an =
oven, Rabbi Ya'akov Orlanski HaCohen.was found.praying.they took his =
brain from his skull and his wife's intestines were crushed.the =
pharmacist, Ben-Tzion Gershon, lame, unable to move, who served in =
Hebron for 40 years, kindly assisting many Arabs, they cut off his nose =
and fingers, killed him, raped his daughter and murdered her with awful =
torture. The teacher Dubkinov and Yitzhak Abushdid were strangled with a =
rope.six synagogues.including 64 Torah scrolls, many of them ancient, =
from the Spanish exile, all were stolen and desecrated."
In response to this, the remainder of the community was expelled 'for =
their own safety,' and the murderers inherited them. Following the =
Jordanian occupation, King Hussein built a fruit and vegetable wholesale =
market on part of the quarter, rented it to the Hebron municipality, who =
rented it to wholesalers. When the city was liberated, it was discovered =
that the Jewish property, including the wholesale market, was still =
registered in the name of its Jewish owners, but was transferred to the =
Custodian for Enemy Property (Israel). In fact, the Israeli military =
government did not return the property to its owners, but continued to =
rent it to Arabs under the title "property of the Israeli enemy!"=20
The Jews who returned to the quarter were forced to pass through the =
crowded wholesale market, leading to many incidents. In any case, as the =
city grew, the area was no longer appropriate for a market and the =
wholesalers turned to the mayor to find a more suitable site. However, =
he refused, in order to prevent Jewish return to the area.
In the meantime, Hebron Arabs returned to murdering Jews. Yeshiva =
student Aharon Gross was stabbed to death opposite the wholesale market. =
Other murders, including the Goldstein carnage, forced the government to =
close the market. The Israeli custodian did not renew the lease with the =
city and the wholesalers found another location, much more appropriate. =
Two intifadas left scars, and most terribly, the murder of infant =
Shalhevet Pass, next to the wall of the wholesale market.
This is the key to much friction between Hebron's Jews and the =
government, who were afraid to 'openly and rightfully' return, as Hertzl =
said, that which was stolen from them, fearing 'what the world and the =
left would say.' So it was that Hebron's Jewish community, just as any =
other living, healthy organism expects to grow and develop, was left to =
do for itself, by itself.
So it was that the ruins of the Avraham Avinu synagogue were renovated, =
originally built by Spanish exiles, only after demonstrations; so it was =
at the ancient Jewish cemetery, only after scandals; so too did Jews =
return to pray at Ma'arat HaMachpela, only after sit-down strikes and =
protests; so too was the return to Beit Hadassah, only after women snuck =
into the basement, followed by the murder of six men by a terror gang, =
men who had come on Sabbath eve to say Kiddush for the besieged women.
After Arab rights to the empty wholesale market expired, families who =
had waited much too long due to government refusal to allow new =
construction, transformed the buildings into livable apartments. During =
a Supreme Court hearing, initiated by the Hebron municipality, the State =
argued that the Hebron municipality had no rights to the site and that =
the only title-holder was the Israeli Custodian for Abandoned Property, =
who issued an eviction order against the Jewish residents of the market. =
The order was appealed to an 'appeals committee' which, by majority =
vote, upheld the decision to expel the Jews. One of the judges accepted =
the settler's claims and another recommended that the custodian rent the =
property to its present inhabitants. A request was forwarded, but is =
still pending. The reader can judge: where is the logic and justice?
Two questions remain: To the Arabs - When you transformed the Jewish =
Quarter with blood and fire into an Arab market, there wasn't yet a =
'conqueror, refugees, or a Jewish state. So, why?
And to Zahava Galon - Thousands of eviction orders against Arabs in =
Yesha and Israel have been issued and are not implemented. Why, among =
them all, does only the wholesale market keep you awake at night?
